Alteryx: Making life easier!

I used Alteryx Analytics individually for some research that I was doing for one of the data projects that I had. It has an intuitive workflow for data blending and analytics. It makes all the processes much faster compared to what it was before.
  • It can independently generate required analytics instead of having to require specialists.
  • The ability to read and write in a multitude of formats: from Excel, Access tables, Tableau and Teradata to MapInfo, ESRI, Google Earth, etc.
  • Single drag and drop workflow instead of multiple tools.
Cons
  • The visualization that Alteryx provides can be improved much more than where it stands tonight.
  • It doesn't seem to be able to process Big Data as efficiently as I would have liked.
  • There are a lot of things that you need to learn.
It is well suited where the user likes to write some code from time to time and also in cases where machine learning is required. Alteryx uses R for its machine learning which makes it life easier. Scenarios where maps need to be created for visualization are the examples. It lags a lot compared to other similar softwares for visualization but is very friendly for data analysis.

Unlike dealing with already cleansed and validated data sitting in data warehouses, when it comes to big volumes of unstructured 'dirty' data in non-standard formats which then need to be quickly cleansed for analysis is where Alteryx shines. By making use of easy-to-understand workflows, even not-so-technical users are able to leverage the built-in tools in order to quickly clean, process and output data in the required format without having to defer to a data engineering specialist. An example includes trying to process 100+ text files containing 10+ million key IDs separated by spaces, which if done manually via Microsoft Excel would have likely taken roughly half an hour to process each separate file, thus requiring potentially 50+ hours to complete. Instead in Alteryx uses a simple workflow which opens a text file, separates each key ID into a new row and discarding. The headers then repeat for all the text files in the directory taking half an hour to design the workflow. After this, it takes less than a minute to actually run and output a single file which can be then used by Microsoft PowerBI or Tableau to perform analysis and/or create an ad hoc dashboard.
  • Large active community which has a lot of existing examples allowing users to find solutions very quickly. Whereas for more specific problems, a large active community also means there are always experienced users available to jump on and try to resolve any issues.
  • Simple but powerful standard built-in workflow tools which can easily be leveraged to accomplish any assortment of tasks; due to their simplicity the processes can easily be explained and understood by all users alike.
  • Swift performance coupled with excellent integration and compatibility with other platforms, where complex workflows can literally be performed in seconds while outputting into specific formats such as .hyper files for Tableau usage.
Cons
  • Additional built-in examples of workflows and tools would be very handy for beginner users.
  • The aged interface could do with a revamp.
  • More visible documentation and examples on the syntax used.
Alteryx is well suited to scenarios dealing with ad hoc unstructured and 'dirty' data that sits outside of a conventional ETL pipeline, allowing for quick analysis of large data sets which exceed the capabilities of Microsoft Excel. Whereas for structured and cleaned-up data that's already sitting in data warehouses, traditional scripting will be more efficient than trying to leverage Alteryx to output data required for consumption and analysis, as Alteryx is not a viable substitute for enterprise-grade ETL pipelines.

Alteryx Analytics has been used by my organization on a very small scale as of now. It is being used by only me for now. It can be used to blend data easily without any hassles and to remove the complexity for predictive analysis for people without detailed knowledge about those things.
  • Blends data beautifully.
  • Easily interacts with most databases.
  • Great integration with R.
Cons
  • Reading tableau data.
  • The price seems to be really expensive.
  • Support for special characters isn't the best.
The ability to abstract processing and to modularize is a useful software development model made more efficient by the clean, modular approach of the software. This lets users leverage prior modules and workflows effectively and somewhat transparently. It seamlessly uses R for its machine learning side.

Alteryx is used in several departments including Data Science, Finance, Risk, Marketing, and Sales. It is used for everything from simple ETL to complex advanced analytics, including predictive modeling/ML/AI.
  • Very fast ETL
  • Very easy to use drag/drop GUI
  • Very easy to learn
Cons
  • Include assisted modeling with designer product
  • Send out patches for prior version bugs/defects, instead of only fixing them in new releases
  • Full SDLC support
[Alteryx is] great for ETL and data wrangling/data shaping. It is very easy for a beginner to learn. However, it might be less appropriate for someone wanting to develop line-by-line coding applications, since it's primarily a GUI.

Alteryx is to my knowledge the most efficient tool for agile data preparation. I use it massively as a low-code yet elaborate-feature-rich piece of software to acquire, transform, cleanse and analyse data, generally big data, from various and heterogeneous sources as required for the corporate internal audit assignments which cover the full scope of business units and activities in the company I work with.
  • data prep
  • acquiring data from various sources in various formats
  • combining (joins), (even fuzzy) matching, parsing
  • dealing swiftly with big data
  • providing a graphical (audit) process trail
Cons
  • (basic) machine learning functionalities
  • practical visualization outputs
  • (even) more straightforward integration of Python and R code
  • SQL push down (translation of workflows into SQL code)
  • (full blown) cloud version of Designer
To any "Excel power-user kind of" profile, to any any data owner willing to reap information from huge volumes of data and facing data prep difficulties, I would definitely recommend Alteryx. Yet, Alteryx is not the best suited for machine learning, even in a low-code approach and should for such needs be regarded as a very useful preparation tool before actual machine learning processes. Alteryx deploys well bottom up, pushed by thrilled users and doers. It is not to be launched as an ERP-like project from top down, with armies of consultants and project managers.
