We ended up not selecting EC2, we chose Google Compute Engine instead. Reason for us choosing GCE was due to:
  1. Ability to define custom compute units in GCE.
  2. More transparent pricing due to automatic usage discounts.
  3. Less expensive for equal compute unit classes.
  4. Better UX of the administration and console.
AWS is great when you have a very specific legacy environment that you need to "cloud-enable". I think there are better options for non-legacy teams.

EC2 is the standard for flexibility, reliability, user experience, and scalability. It could compare to something like other external servers that only provide a command line option to access. Amazon allows for a dashboard to control user access, so security is rarely a problem. In addition, you have access to Amazon's full suite of products for integration which makes it easy to add new features as your company grows.

When it comes to AWS EC2, the technical aspects are about equal to many of the other cloud services, but where AWS EC2 shines at is its management, and growth capabilities. You can start your web based business using AWS for literally zero start-up costs: you use the same Amazon account you use to order office supplies and your laptops, click a button, and start renting servers that only cost what you ACTUALLY use, which is really revolutionary for the data industry.
