Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)

I use Amazon S3 to host websites for myself and clients I build them for. I've used other web hosting services but have found S3 to offer the best combination of ease of use, cost controls, and reliability. S3 buckets have been a lifesaver for me in allowing me to manage multiple sites in the easiest manner available while keeping my site hosting expenses to a minimum.
  • Cost reduction is a major factor in my selection of Amazon S3 for hosting websites. When you host your site on S3 you are billed for the traffic you use, not based on a flat-rate. As a result it is far easier to keep site hosting expenses low, and scale up when you need to.
  • S3 buckets are managed through a very simple and easy interface that is extremely well-documented and can be set up with a few clicks. I can deploy a site in under five minutes, so the time-saving aspects of this are hard to overstate.
  • AWS is known for reliability and you can be confident that your site or data hosted on an S3 bucket will be available when you or your clients need it. As anyone knows, site reliability is a major factor in driving business decisions on whom to select as a host, and you can't get much better than AWS.
Cons
  • Learning curve can be a bit steep for some of the more advanced features for the service.
  • Could be a bit more accessible for non-technical or lower-technical users such as small business owners and non-tech professionals.
  • Bucket policies can be daunting to work with (although some example baseline policies are available).
S3 is an excellent service for website and web application hosting for those willing to take the time to learn the complexities of AWS and want complete control over content, implementation and security. It also does well as a backup and storage mechanism, and hosting software files to be available to download. If what you are after is a quick and easy way to get a site up and running and you are not about to write the code for that site yourself, then you are probably looking for another solution that includes site-building tools, such as Squarespace.

S3 is cost effective, works well, and provides many service levels.

We are using S3 for storing compliance generated by various internal tools. The reports are not frequently accessed but we have legal guidelines for retention. We also use s3 to host static web interfaces with links to the document. It makes really easy to access the documents anywhere. We also use s3 to store various inputs to other AWS services such as AWS Sagemaker.

  • S3 provides a cost-effective, reliable, and durable way to store objects.
  • S3 can store files from almost any system with its great SDK and API.
  • S3 provides multiple tiers of storage which make it cost-effective based on usage.
Cons
  • I would like to see better control within the s3 bucket policies. It is hard to decide whether to use a bucket ACL or policy.
  • I would like to see the ability to lock down list permissions and still see it in the AWS console.
S3 is perfect for object storage. This means it cannot be used as a boot volume. It is good for serving files and storage backups. There are several price tiers and service levels. It takes several decisions to strike the right balance between what you are using it for and what is an acceptable cost level.

If managed right Amazon S3 is great, a cost-effective offsite backup solution

We use Amazon S3 as our off-site remote backup storage solutions for our entire storage IT infrastructure. We have our on-prem storage infrastructure being backed up hourly, weekly and monthly to S3. Amazon S3 has enabled our organization to have a disaster recovery plan at a cost-effective price without the need of maintaining an offsite storage infrastructure.
  • Very simple to setup and administer.
  • Can grow with your storage needs.
  • Cost effective.
  • Geo redundant.
  • Fault tolerant and reliable.
Cons
  • If not managed correct it could get expensive.
  • Searching needs to be improved and is not effective.
  • Better reporting would be great.
Amazon S3 is great for any organization that has a dedicated IT or IT Department. You can build out a fully redundant and can scale as your remote backup needs grow. But if not correctly monitored, the storage usage of S3 could become extremely expensive.

Amazon S3 offers a cost effective, redundant storage solution to put your mind at ease!

We use Amazon S3 as an additional way to safely backup our server and user data for our entire company and all of our clients. It is a cost effective, redundant service that gives us and our clients piece of mind that their data is secured. It has a storage location in Canada as well which lets us keep our data inside the country which means our user data stays put.
  • Cost effective
  • Easy setup
  • Setup and forget
  • Multiple data centres
  • Free first year!
  • Bills in local currency
  • Can set a budget
Cons
  • Global unique bucket names
  • Costs vary per region
  • Costs could balloon
Amazon S3 is a great service to safely backup your data where redundancy is guaranteed and the cost is fair. We use Amazon S3 for data that we backup and hope we never need to access but in the case of a catastrophic or even small slip of the finger with the delete command we know our data and our client's data is safely backed up by Amazon S3.

Transferring data into Amazon S3 is free but transferring data out has an associated, albeit low, cost per GB. This needs to be kept in mind if you plan on transferring out a lot of data frequently. There may be other cost effective options although Amazon S3 prices are really low per GB. Transferring 150TB would cost approximately $50 per month.

We utilize Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) cloud storage for public linking of audio files for our website's audio archive. Also we have all of our websites automatically push monthly backups to Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) cloud storage. It was simple to get started and has just worked for years without any more adjustments or changes needed.
  • Public linking
  • Pricing
  • Support knowledgebase
Cons
  • More User Friendly Interface
  • Simplify some complicated functionality
Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) Cloud Storage is simple to get up and running and is quite price competitive. It can be a bit cumbersome to get some things going, but the support knowledgebase is very helpful for getting past that. The interface also can be a bit daunting to a non-technical user.
