Workspaces are used for remotely connecting to our organization's servers and access our virtual machines from anywhere. We use this application widely in our company. It has a simple and clean UI for any user to understand. Especially during work from the home period, it has been our part of daily work life. It runs smoothly without any stutters. It's a great option for accessing virtual machines. It is fast, secure, and reliable.
  • Minimalistic UI
  • Multi factor authentication is enabled for better security
  • Secure and reliable
  • Less vulnerable to virus attacks
  • Has application for every major Operating system
  • Restarting workspaces takes lot of time
  • MFA can be done only via email. Text or dedicated app would be a great choice.
It is best suited for work-from-home situations. It doesn't require any VPN to connect. It runs smoothly and without any lags. But when the internet is slow it gets disconnected instantly without intimating the user. It is well designed and completely optimized to run on any operating system. However, macOS client suffers while closing the application. Updates are regular.
  • Multi factor authentication
  • Simple and clean UI
  • Ability access from any device.
  • Doesn't need VPN
  • Easy to connect to our virtual machines
  • Multi factor authentication has ensured of no unwanted logins
  • Trouble shooting is easy
  • Regular updates for better security and optimized usage.
Cisco AnyConnect is a VPN client and using a VPN can reduce the internet speed. It is not quite reliable as workspaces. Cisco AnyConnect is not at all optimised for linux machines. They suffer a lot from crashing and loss of internet speed. Workspaces works quite well even on linux machines.

Amazon WorkSpaces (VDI) allows our remote work force to access Amazon's comprehensive Virtual Desktop offerings anywhere without being limited by a fast connection or infrastructure. Amazon currently offers a large free tier offering and has made the UI much easier to navigate. This is an offering that is currently very reliable and growing rapidly. Amazon is a source for remote desktops with packages to suit an individual, small business or enterprise. The free tier is suitable for learning, an individual or small business to become well versed in AWS.
  • Configurable to meet any project need, terminate when not in use
  • Substantial free tier
  • Much improved UI
  • Rapidly deploying new offerings
  • Ease of use, but a bit of set up
  • Could use UI simplification
  • More Mac offerings
With a substantial free tier, AWS is a solution for fast, reliable and secure access to tools and workflows for any project. AWS is still the most intimidating cloud solution to approach. While there is no shortage to power and solutions, it is not for the faint of heart. It is easy to get lost while using AWS though the solution is there. Amazon WorkSpaces (VDI) requires an IT manager with experience deploying applications and building databases. Comparably, Parallels is a much easier UI to navigate, along with many open source and free options.
  • Integrating with other AWS solutions is essential
  • Scalable for any project
  • Robust educational offering on most OS
  • Positive ROI with superior control over usage
  • Large selection of relevant packages
  • Easily scale 1 to 1000
WorkSpaces (VDI) is a much more robust solution that competitor offerings when considering scalability and security. Amazon WorkSpaces has a substantial free tier to explore if this is the right solution for your project without purchasing other solutions. Considering this, AWS is a great solution to explore Virtual Desktop experiences and workstations for any growing remote business.

Amazon WorkSpaces is currently in an extended pilot in our organization as part of our post-COVID response to creating a "hardware device agnostic" infrastructure that does not depend on traditional hardware to enable employees to perform their computing functions normally. The goal is to be able to present any user with their full range of applications and services, as well as file, from any endpoint. The current trial involves employees in multiple departments using the service to access a virtualized Windows Desktop.
  • Quick, clean access to the VDI images.
  • Easy provisioning of images to use based on multiple criteria.
  • Integrating with our other products (AV/AM, productivity, etc.).
  • Streaming of media to the endpoint.
For our use case, we found Amazon WorkSpaces well suited to remote work and other "work from home" and "work on the road" situations where the end user did not need to consume HD media (notably 4K) and did not need to produce any multimedia (audio, video, etc), but rather needed to perform more typical tasks such as web-browsing our corporate intranet and internal online apps, accessing files and using them through office productivity suites (Office - both online and desktop, and LibreOffice are under testing), etc.
  • Fast provisioning.
  • Integration with existing apps and procedures.
  • Security of the session and the authentication.
  • Positive: Easy access to Windows virtual desktops.
  • Negative: Somewhat cantankerous media playback.
  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop)
We haven't finished our selection process yet, but are leaning towards Amazon due to the ability to host in Amazon's datacenter rather than our own (this aligns with our current strategem of pursuing a web/cloud-first philosophy). While Citrix definitely does better with media, being the inventor of thin protocols and all, Amazon's offering meets the needs for business consumers quite well.

[Amazon WorkSpaces (VDI)] is used as a virtual machine to connect to our network for troubleshooting purposes
  • Effective Token validation
  • Safe way to manage our credentials
  • The machine state is preserved to continue the next day from the same point
  • Copy and paste does not work well
  • The performance is degraded during the day being slow at the end of the journey
  • Some user interface issues displaying the page
  • Sometimes when I type a word a letter is pasted many [times]
[Amazon WorkSpaces (VDI) is] well suited in security aspects

Not always appropriate in user experience with the interface as typing and using shortcuts don't work as expected
  • Token based auth
  • Encrypted password
  • Data security
  • Having a linux VM seems positive due to the security of the OS
  • The Linux OS version sometimes is basic and requires extra apps to be installed
[Amazon WorkSpaces (VDI)] does not consume too many resources in the local machine as the VM is remote and it has many benefits
