I use OpenOffice instead of MS Office. I contains everything I need from MS Office and the price is right - FREE.
  • edits Word documents
  • handles Excel spreadsheets flawlessly.
Cons
  • it presently has all functionality I need, but redlining could be improved
I normally use WordPerfect, but many colleagues use MS Word. OpenOffice gives me interoperability.

I use Apache OpenOffice for the redaction of quotations, bills of materials, slide shows, letters and several other types of texts. It solves the problem of needing a good text processor but mainly a free alternative to Microsoft Excel with Calc, which is used for most of the administrative tasks regarding money and even some regarding engineering, like reports.
  • Being free
  • Opening MS office documents
  • Having a good user interface
Cons
  • Some people used to Microsoft products can feel it's a little bit old in its style
  • I saves documents in its native format, which is incompatible with MS Word or Excel, unless you change that in the preferences tab
  • The UI is not very pretty
It's perfectly suited for small bussinesses like mine that only need basic functionality out of an office suite. You can do almost everything you would do with MS Office but for free. Very good if you need to redact documents that will be printed or saved as a PDF only.

I'd say it's not great if you need to share documents with other people who use MS Office, like most do, because although it can save in MS Office formats, they are older versions, so you can't open files created in the new versions.

I have been a user of OpenOffice off and on from when it was Star OfficeSuite; at the time it was the only Office Suite for Linux systems, and today is cross-platform and highly compatible and indeed equivalent with Microsoft Office.

While not being used across my current place of employment, in a previous career it was the sole office suite utilized by the business entity, selected because of its price and compatibility. With it I was able to send documents to other (larger) businesses who utilized current versions of Microsoft Office, and they were able to see the issued documents with high compatibility and no display issues.
  • Price: the version I used was free.
  • Compatibility: With exception of specific tabling in the word processor and macros in the spreadsheet tool, there was perfect compatibility.
  • System compatibility: I was able to access and use it with fairly old systems, and did not need a new or current PC to install and operate.
Cons
  • The system is fairly bloated. The amount of space the office suite takes up is increasingly larger and larger with each iteration.
  • Macro support is weak.
  • Greater XLSX and DOCX extension compatibility without required "conversions" would be good.
OOO is excellent for personal use or small businesses which cannot afford a Microsoft Office license. With it, you can expect high compatibility between MSO and other office suites, as well as an intuitive menu system that borrows many attributes from more widely-known office suites (particularly MS-Office).

It is a large installation, and leans heavily on JRE (Java Runtime Environment), which explains its high compatibility. Unfortunately that also means it is not optimized for the devices on which it runs, and you will find slower load/save/document conversion/export times compared to other office suites.

But the price wins. You can't compare it to others.

The Apache Open Office suite is seen in our organization as a replacement for Microsoft Office that will be used across all departments. Right now it is not, however, I have been evaluating it for a while now in order to present the replacement proposal to higher management. The biggest business problem that this will solve is reducing cost while addressing the needs covered currently by Microsoft Office.
  • The best thing that OpenOffice does is being free. The cost of Microsoft Office is high and smaller shops can't afford it.
  • OpenOffice has similar features with Microsoft Office and that is a lot, given that the Office team at Microsoft is huge and this product goes through all cycles of marketing, product planning&requirements, development, testing, rollout, and production maintenance.
  • In terms of performance, I have seen OpenOffice run as well as or even better than Microsoft Office.
  • It is cross-platform, one of the key strengths of OpenOffice.
  • Provides compatibility of the generated files with Microsoft Office - this will make the transition to OpenOffice for any company smoother.
Cons
  • The look & feel in general of OpenOffice is outdated and it doesn't match with the one from Microsoft.
  • The usability of the menus can use a little improvement; sometimes it is harder to find what you need in a reasonable time.
  • Some incompatibilities with .docx and macros in Excel .xlsx files are present. If you have complex macros and formulas in Excel files you may find it won't work in other tools.
Apache OpenOffice is one good alternative to Microsoft Office when it comes to working with text documents, spreadsheets and presentations offline. It provides most features that MSO has but all that will not cost you anything. In addition, it runs on all platforms not only on Windows.

However, for online collaboration and browser support, you should take a serious look at Google Docs.

Open Office - Compatible and free.

We use it as a cost-effective alternative to Microsoft Office 365 on common computers for users who do not have a dedicated license. The Apache OpenOffice suite allows us to do everything that the more polished but subscription-necessary MS O365.
  • Low resource footprint.
  • Works on older computers with outdated OS(s).
  • Similar in looks to the more widely used MS Office, it makes uptake easier.
Cons
  • Requires Java. Another piece of software that needs to be up-to-date.
  • The user interface is a bit clunky.
  • Limited suite compared to the main competitor in O365.
It is free to use, and where we have temp or volunteer workers, we can use this without worrying about subscription costs while providing a platform for work to still get done.
