Pros and Cons
  • It is an easy-to-use product and you can build out checks with Firefox Selenium IDE (no longer supported). A good measure of availability.
  • Set the standard for synthetic checks and several APMs have copied that.
Likelihood to Recommend
It's a good starter solution, but it was difficult to maintain. Often, the vendor wanted to use us as a guinea pig for upgrades and then writing the upgrade document based on what they found/broke/etc with our environment. I prefer late adopter.

Alternatives Considered
Seemed to work well, but we didn't want to do a long renewal. Other products are maturing and better integrated with our systems. It works for now, but we're looking to replace it.

Update: New Relic has caught up with Apica and seems to integrate better with the other aspects of APM.

It allows us to know if our services and applications are up/down. It's great for specific and local end-point monitoring, not so great for enterprise monitoring. Its value lies in being able to simulate real user load against an application or service.

  • The infrastructure availability can be seen in a single UI.
  • The ability to simulate high-traffic loads on applications is very valuable.

We actually preferred IP HostMonitor over Apica Synthetic, as it was more stable and uses less real estate. IP HostMonitor does not support true load simulation, which we miss from the Apica Synthetic trials.

It helps a lot by giving me live data on how the server's state is and helps inform me about what the problem might be when the servers go down or lose connectivity.

We were having an update for a few websites and, with Apica, I was able to see all the servers that were posted to go down for the updates, but then about five others went down that we didn't think were posted to go down. Turns out, a different team was also running an update without letting us know.

  • Apica Synthetic has been the first alert for when the college food ordering sites have gone down.
  • This speed and information makes our response time faster.
  • We can also use the data sometimes by itself to make a P1 ticket.
Alternatives Considered
I have never used other products that would stack up to what Apica Synthetic does for our company; other software that we use might help with giving different information but would not come close to the mix of monitoring and data we get from Apica Synthetic. The closest product we have would be SolarWinds, but it has other roles that we use it for.

We use Apica Synthetic for monitoring of both public and internal websites with simple URL checks and more advanced scenario checks. It is easy to see what has gone wrong with a check and also compare checks. We also use it to send out monthly SLA reports to the customers.

Likelihood to Recommend
All HTTP checks with Apica Synthetic make it the natural choice. When it comes to other types of checks, Apica Synthetic has a solution but there are also some other tools you can use instead.
