Appcues is currently being used by our customer success and customer support departments as well as our sales team for customers signing up for our trial accounts and our free versions of our services. There are many features within our app and our customer are oftentimes not technically savvy, so Appcues helps guide our new customers through setting up their account.
  • Appcues makes the setup process extremely simple. Rather than having to build all of the cues and flows into our app, we simply installed the Appcues code which essentially lays over top our app and allows us to build any new flows we'd like and push them live without having to consult our engineers.
  • Appcues provides a variety of cue options to display to users. There are tooltips, slide outs and full modals. This allows us to target users on different pages without being too invasive.
  • Their targeting and reporting is also superb. We're able to show flows to certain users based on URL paths and other actions they've taken within our app. We can also see some great reports of users who have completed our flows and metrics on where they stopped if they did not complete a flow.
Cons
  • We were extremely surprised that there are not any Appcues used in Appcues. The app is pretty easy to use, once you figure out how to use it. There were not any type of tutorials when we logged in that quickly walked through how to setup a flow.
  • Appcues has lots of support articles, however they are almost so numerous that it was hard to find simple onboarding documentation that we found useful.
  • The different tooltips and product actions are great, but being able to customize the different cues a little bit more by changing sizes and aspect ratios could be an improvement.
Appcues is perfect for in-app messaging and guiding users through completing product actions. They could improve the usability of the product and the overall UX / UI for new users. Their ability to customize a theme is great for an app that needs to setup something very professional quickly. The flows also look beautiful and feel like part of our app. We're glad we chose Appcues, it's just taken us awhile to fully implement it.
  • We receive less support tickets from new users because our Appcues flows guide them through completing basic tasks in their account.
  • Customers in our trial accounts and free accounts rarely reach out to our team with setup needs.
  • Customers using our Appcues flows love the experience, which is crucial during the onboarding process -- especially since our user-base can be less technically savvy.
Appcues is much more affordable than WalkMe and Pendo from our research. We were previously using Intercom, however Intercom was designed more for purely in-app messaging rather than actually providing flows and cues guiding users throughout an app. We also received lots of complaints from users about Intercom's messaging, which they found to be annoying thus requested to turn off.

Our organization uses Appcues for subsetting. It's very helpful for narrowing down information and it really helps us learn about our customers. Good tool for managing communication and sending information to our CRM. Also, being able to track the net promoter score is great. Really intuitive UI so non-technical people get onboard quickly.
  • NPS
  • Customer Learning
  • Customization
Cons
  • Text options
  • Documentation
  • Pricy
It is great for segmentation. Demographics are key for trying to get new information about our customers and the tool really helps get the information quickly and makes it easy to digest new findings.

It's pretty expensive, so start-ups may shy away from this product. It does come with a lot of features that make it worthwhile.
  • Segmentation
  • NPS
  • CRM Integration
  • Faster communication
  • Measuring NPS
  • Customer Surveys
Most of these tools all promise the same thing and have similar directions. I think that Appcues is great if the budget is there and not going to be a problem. Where it really shines is it's customization and easy-to-use interface that truly makes the experience very smooth. Stonly has better onboarding capabilities, but the overall services for Appcues makes this a better investment for us.

We use Appcues within our church management SaaS product to do product walkthroughs, collect survey/feedback forms, and notify users of new features or information. Appuces allows the marketing and product teams to create in-app messaging without having to go through engineering. This makes it much easier to do continual A/B testing and faster pivoting.
  • As a whole, Appcues is very easy to use.
  • You can build templates to easily style future modal windows and tooltips.
  • They have great customer service! Any time I've had a question our support rep always gets back to me with solutions.
Cons
  • Appcues doesn't allow you to track clicking the X in the top right corner to close a modal window. So, if a user clicks the X you can't build criteria around it to say "if someone clicks the X then do/don't show the modal again next time." You can only build criteria around buttons.
  • The checklists are great to have, but I feel they could have a lot more functionality options. Example: If you wanted to have a checklist item direct someone to another page, it would be great to be able to check that item off without having to fire an event off of a flow.
  • The NPS tool is nice, but I feel it could be more robust. We ultimately will be using a different NPS tool.
Appcues works well for building in-app walkthroughs, modal windows to pop up information to users, and collect feedback from users. It's very easy to use, but it can be cumbersome at times and you do run into roadblocks that force you to create workarounds. For more purposes Appcues works great.
  • Modal window to provide users information
  • Walkthroughs to onboard new users
  • Ability to collect in-app feedback
  • Helped us increase user engagement within our product.
  • Has helped us increase the number of users actually reading important information vs. us emailing them.
  • Has helped us increase conversions of our trials to sign ups by helping our users see the value of our product more quickly.
One of the things we really loved about Appcues that ultimately led us to go with them is that it has a two-way integration with Heap Analytics. We are big fans of Heap, so being able to create user segments in Heap and push them over to Appcues to show modals to was a huge plus to us. We also found Appcues to be easier than many of the other products out there, which meant less time training new employees how to use it.

Appcues is used within SaaS web applications that our business provides to internal users and customer users alike. The main problem Appcues addresses are the ability to implement user onboarding features, feature tours and help tooltips on-the-fly directly into your production web application. This mitigates from having to effectively hardcode these user-oriented features into your Development, QA, and Production environments and lets you make changes to them immediately, without having to push changes through each environment. Appcues also lets you target these features (tours, tooltips, user onboarding, etc.) to specific users, groups of users, customers, etc.
  • Implement application/feature/release tours for web applications.
  • Make changes directly on production without the need to stage them in Dev or QA.
  • Target tours, tooltips, and onboarding messages to users, groups of users, customers or any developer defined criteria.
Cons
  • There are certain limitations of where tooltips can be placed, depending on the application is built.
  • The way 'appcues' are organized in the management console can be a little more user-friendly.
Appcues is well suited for web applications with small development teams that don't employ continuous integration to make updates to their application. If your application release methodology employs continuous integration, then Appcues may not be as useful because making changes to production can be expedited in the event of a typo or issue with the tooltip(s) or other user onboarding feature, but in my opinion, it's useful even in CI environments.
  • Appcues has allowed us to quickly deploy user help features that target specific users, audiences, even customers with very little effort.
  • Appcues has helped gain user traction by providing helpful tooltips, tours, and other rich content, reducing the first-time user learning curve.
We looked at WalkMe a while back when we started looking for a solution, but Appcues at that time made it significantly easier to use and implement. I haven't evaluated WalkMe recently, but I'm sure they've come a long way, just as Appcues has.
