Appian - A Flexible and Friendly BPM Tool

Rating: 10 out of 10

Appian is being used across our entire organisation for a range of purposes from customer management to breach reporting. We have found Appian to be very flexible and well suited to whatever requirement we have thrown at it.
  • Easy and simple to use
  • Very flexible
  • Regular product enhancements by Appian
Cons
  • Appian training is quite basic and linear
  • On premise support could be better
  • So many product releases in a year can also make it difficult to stay on the latest version

Scenarios where Appian is well suited

  • When overlaid over multiple systems or legacy systems to provide a simple layer for users and provide automation in place of manual tasks
  • Where the "customer journey" can be simplified and made more consistent

Scenarios where Appian is less appropriate

  • Where a fully customised end to end solution is needed with very specific interface requirements

Appian is used for business processes for a PV application, and to help users of business processes to generate reports.

With Appian, it is easy to modify processes on the fly, and still maintain the necessary audit trail for users to track back and understand changes.

  • Change business rule on the fly without much effort
  • Produce reports with great flexibility
  • Strong API to Interface with other applications
Cons
  • Supporting library functionality could be more robust to support various business requirements.
  • Needs to be stronger on performance as a case management tool. This is key for users to continue working with this tool.
  • Stronger reporting capability, especially ability to interface with a commercial reporting tool. It would be better to have a streamlined interface with other reporting tools.
Appian is most suitable for business requiring that business rules be changed frequently. With a strong graphical interface to illustrate the workflow and status, this definitely help users visualize the different stage of the business process. However, on the reporting end, many business units would like to use their own reporting tool. I would like the interface to other reporting tools be more robust and seamless.

We started using Appian for one of the pilot agile projects in our organization and we got extremely positive responses from the consumers and the users. It is a scalable and very efficient cloud based product that addressed our many problems instantly.

Extremely happy to use Appian and look forward to work on it on the longer term.
  • Quick App functionality - very useful to business users rather than depending on IT teams
Cons
  • Trainings are very costly, many trainings could be offered to lower the cost
The legacy systems that were used to track the records were scattered and so single system to address all. Appian provides a central view. Not only that but the mobile app has an amazing feature through which all the users across the globe can keep track of all the work that they do as part of their daily job.

We use Appian to support our institutional product line. It replaced legacy homegrown applications that did not scale.
  • Appian is able to hit the ground running and develop quickly
  • Appian is always putting out new features
Cons
  • Appian installs are difficult and time consuming
  • Appian could give more control to designers on the user experience
It's well suited when you have a team that is interested in building their own applications and doing Agile. It's less appropriate when you have long-running processes.
