What is Apptio Cloudability?

Cloudability from Apptio, an IBM Company, is a cloud cost management and optimization tool that enables IT, finance, and business teams to optimize their costs and communicate the business value of the cloud. Cloudability is built to support the organizational adoption of cloud financial management - the process of bringing financial accountability to the scalable, variable, and distributed nature of the cloud.

Cloudability normalizes, and structures cloud billing and usage data from across public cloud ecosystems so that the user can actively manage spend and consumption to continuously improve the unit economics of cloud services, enabling teams to:
  • Fully allocate cloud spend, including containers and support charges, to ensure a full chargeback of cloud costs to the business.
  • Optimize cloud costs, leveraging rightsizing recommendations across major cloud service providers to reduce operating expenses and fund future innovation investments.
  • Make decisions with speed and confidence, enabling team ownership and accountability of cloud spend to better align cloud investments to business objectives.
  • Allocate shared costs, specialized technology and labor along with vendors to extend FinOps and accountability to the total cost of running cloud.

Apptio Cloudability Features

  • Supported: Visibility: Translates billing and usage data into a unified view to contextualize costs and govern cloud consumption.
  • Supported: Cost Optimization: Matches spend to needs, displays reservations and commitment based discounts, and identifies candidates for purchase and modification.
  • Supported: Efficiency: Continuously improves the unit economics of cloud with a shared understanding of costs and business value.

We use it currently to increase visibility and help coordinate costs to help us understand our usages across multiple departments who never had insight into this information. Our costs began to spiral out of control and now we have an understanding of drivers and trends. I was recently able to identify a spike in costs on one resource that we met on as a group and developed a strategy to save a good chunk of money on a monthly basis.
  • Visualizes the trends.
  • Notifications via email to keep us aware of activities.
  • Helps us forecast better.
  • The modeling is a bit difficult to navigate as a new user in my opinion.
I think the best value that it offers is visibility for many different user types as opposed to the native tools the products offer that are limited to the engineering teams generally. I think it is appropriate if you have multiple cloud providers as well as it puts everything in the same format for easier reviews.
  • Improved visibility for all involved users.
  • Allowed for transparency and conversation around cloud usage and best options.
  • Saved us money due to a variance alert.
It was a bit difficult to get up and running for me personally as I was brought in late and didn't get a lot of training during implementation. There are some confusing areas of the reporting in my experience, but overall it is a positive product.
  • ApptioOne
It has actually been significantly difficult in my experience as I have been tasked at managing both in our organization, so I am Apptio Cloudability Admin and TBMA for our department trying to roll this out to users of both and help develop a TBM Office as well as a CCOE just seems like it should be discouraged to the buyers of the product.
I have not used any other products.

I think it takes a full person to support.
  • Control of spend.
  • Understanding of utilization.
  • Transparency of information across departmental borders.
  • None yet.
  • Save money with RI usage.
  • Better understandings through tagging and business mappings.
If it were up to me, I would renew and dedicate additional resources to the product.

We have a very large, diverse Azure environment that many departments have apps/services in. It is an easy way to segregate, and break down costs as needed without giving users access to the actual Azure Portal itself. The speed to create dashboards, or run reports is a big advantage when departments need viability of their owns costs.
  • Visibility of reserved instances, and recommendations for further savings
  • Right sizing suggestions based on VM utilization
  • Dashboards - easy to add widgets for quick visibility of desired metrics
  • I'd like see the actual VM name in reservation portfolio, rather than the reservation ID
  • I find the speed in which the changes are applied a frustration. E.g if you add a business mapping, you often have to wait 24hrs or more for the data to fully process.
  • The user management seems a little clunky, I preferred it when it was part of the actual Cloudy portal, rather that through access administration.
It is very malleable so I like how easily custom views can be created for service owners to view specific costs of items of interest to them. It is useful how easily you can segregate/filter resources from each other. There is an associated administrative overhead, particularly when adding new users to the system, this is maybe more of a shortcoming from my organization, rather than the product itself though.
  • We have seen some substantial cost reductions as a direct result of rightsizing/utilzation suggestions. An estimated 18% per month
  • Greater visibility of allocation of spend, highlights areas to concentrate on for potential reductions, or justification
  • Positive engagement with service owners from other departments so they are now able to have insights of their spend, this was not possible before without manual reports being generated form Azure portal
The interface is quite intuitive and pretty self explanatory. The initial setup wasn't particularly easy, but Apptio support are always on hand and responsive to assist. The views and business mappings really useful tools to to separate sources/departments.Tag explorer is also very useful for seeing untagged spend.
  • Targetprocess
N/A we currently only use Cloudabilty
Cloudabilty was implemented before I joined the organization, so apart from the Azure costings blade, I have no experience of alternatives.

N/A
Training was adequate, but the real learning begins when you start using the product, like most things. All major functions were covered so as an entry point, was a good introduction to the product. The training pace was good as well, the areas were covered in decent depth, without being too much of an information overload.
Easy and intuitive, plenty of FAQ's and online documemntation available
Very configurable, but emphasis seems to be on adequate tagging of the environment

Apptio Usage.

Apptio reports are generated for measuring monthly infrastructure costs segregated by individual LOB to granular services being consumed. These reports help in creating monthly reports, which would eventually help in identifying costs associated with inactive applications and also a nice trend in usage. It also provides a monthly view which is helpful while consolidating app cost reporting. My scope would be to consolidate this infrastructure costs associated with applications supported by technology services. App cost report and then tabulate in excel to measure the cost change each month per application. Capture the changes.
  • I am capturing costs per month.
  • They are showing trends through visualization.
  • Ease of use.
  • Cost for azure applications.
