What is Arena PLM and QMS?

Arena, a PTC business, helps companies to design, produce, and deliver innovative products with a unified cloud-based PLM and QMS platform. Arena understands modern product companies rely on distributed teams and global supply chains to develop products, ensure regulatory compliance (FDA, ISO, ITAR, EAR, and environmental compliance), and respond to customer demands.

Arena states that they have more than 1,400 global high-tech electronics and medical device customers. Companies with complex products comprised of electrical, mechanical, and software designs need a single system to collaborate in real-time. Arena enables every participant throughout the entire product lifecycle to work together–increasing visibility and traceability. This helps to accelerate new product development (NPD) and new product introduction (NPI) by streamlining processes, automating review cycles, and reducing errors to increase profitability.

Quality module was utilized to host the DHF and we held phase reviews directly within Arena. This approach had pros and cons but allowed us to consolidate everything for the DHF in one accessible location.

I've set up a system in Arena to manage human resources, skills, and training. All team members are registered in Arena, and their required skills are derived from their job descriptions. This enables us to identify gaps in competences and plan necessary training sessions. We create tailored training plans based on specific job roles. The progress is tracked within projects, using individualized training plans.

May not be advanced bu the redline and compare features are very useful when customers ask for differences from different revisions or to make sure ECR and ECO's have been properly implemented and that nothing was missed.

Opening multiple browsers with Arena in each one, makes it easier to toggle between items and changes or look for information, and not forget what I was working on. The items tab in an item, you can add another item as a reference, this is great for CMFs, reports, just about anything, this way it does not have to be on the BOM, but shows anything related to this item, I love this!

We created Quality Processes to track living files such as the Design History File, Device Master Record, Risk Management File, and Usability/Human Factors Engineering File. These files can then be linked to controlled procedures, design documents, test reports, Nonconformance Reporting, CAPA, Audit Observations, and Complaint Investigations.

We are using arena for our whole QMS. I am not sure if we are using it in any unusual way. It is helping us keep track of all the data. We work in medical devices field and QMS is one of the main requirements for the development. Arena seems sufficient to keep track to meet the FDA requirements.

When someone is out of office and unable to access Arena, we like to attach documentation of email/written approval for the affected change. If the change is already released, we can't undo the change to add supporting documentation. Fortunately there is an additional tab as part of the change order that can be used to upload memos or proofs of approval, etc.

Our organization required that our SKU part numbers only be transferred from our Arena PLM to SAP ERP, when the following criteria was true:
- SKU was in Rev A (In Production)
- SKU Category = netsuite

To accomplish this, our team leveraged the Arena APIs and obtained scheduled reports out of Arena when new SKU items met the criteria.

We used Arena to create an entire training program. We had to create it from scratch as it was a new area for Arena that they were just rolling out. Arena provided us access, but we had to create the methods for issuing training, adding all key members, etc.

it was great to be able to track all of the training assigned to personnel, and see who was past due, new to the company, and what items needed to be trained on.

The Scribe note has been quite useful during ECO review. It allows managers to give feedback on ECOs that require changes or clarifications within Arena, while also automatically generating links to the relevant pages and reminder emails. It's streamlined the entire process.

Arena seems designed primarily for hardware products. But with appropriate process guidelines, it can be used for software products as well. In particular, having an Item Category for released software, and including the final file (installer, executable, etc.) to be publicly released as part of the "File" tab for the release Item is helpful.
