What is Arena PLM and QMS?

Arena, a PTC business, helps companies to design, produce, and deliver innovative products with a unified cloud-based PLM and QMS platform. Arena understands modern product companies rely on distributed teams and global supply chains to develop products, ensure regulatory compliance (FDA, ISO, ITAR, EAR, and environmental compliance), and respond to customer demands.

Arena states that they have more than 1,400 global high-tech electronics and medical device customers. Companies with complex products comprised of electrical, mechanical, and software designs need a single system to collaborate in real-time. Arena enables every participant throughout the entire product lifecycle to work together–increasing visibility and traceability. This helps to accelerate new product development (NPD) and new product introduction (NPI) by streamlining processes, automating review cycles, and reducing errors to increase profitability.

We did not use a major application. When I first started, our product lines were originally based on linked spreadsheets, then we transitioned to a private party application called "Product Library". I made my recommendations as loudly and often as decorum would permit!

We were looking at using our ERP - IQMS to take the place of Arena but it didn't even come close to having the functionality and ease of use that Arena has. Omnify PLM came in and gave a demonstration and the management team choose Arena over them in a vote that wasn't even close.

I have used both the Arena and Agile systems, and both have pros and cons that must be considered when making a selection as to which solution will best fit your business requirements for today, and will scale with your business vision for tomorrow.

The two differences that stand out in my experience, is that Arena is a great out of the box hosted solution, with some administrator capabilities to customize functionality, and is best suited for small to medium size companies. Where Agile when hosted in-house, can be customized in much greater detail for a large enterprise company.

It's easy to learn and use, someone can be able to learn the basic using Arena with in a few hours. I've used Oracle in the past and had a very hard time to learn even the basics.

Aras, SAP, and Oracle are all alternatives however implementation, cost, and scale are prohibitive.

PropelPLM is killing Arena right now and generally on the same price range.

Omnify Empower also looks to be a promising alternative.

Arena was selected because it has the ability to upload files and associate them with a certification for each item natively. There is more control in Arena initially that Odoo, and we needed that off the bat without needing outside help setting the system up. Arena has the features natively.

I was not part of the Arena selection team. However, I know some of the decision factors included:
- integration with our PDM system
- integration with our eCAD system
- integration with our production enterprise system
- cost
