What is Arena PLM and QMS?

Arena, a PTC business, helps companies to design, produce, and deliver innovative products with a unified cloud-based PLM and QMS platform. Arena understands modern product companies rely on distributed teams and global supply chains to develop products, ensure regulatory compliance (FDA, ISO, ITAR, EAR, and environmental compliance), and respond to customer demands.

Arena states that they have more than 1,400 global high-tech electronics and medical device customers. Companies with complex products comprised of electrical, mechanical, and software designs need a single system to collaborate in real-time. Arena enables every participant throughout the entire product lifecycle to work together–increasing visibility and traceability. This helps to accelerate new product development (NPD) and new product introduction (NPI) by streamlining processes, automating review cycles, and reducing errors to increase profitability.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

Arena is good for basic BOM management and simple component management. As the business expands, its shortcomings with substitutes, the ability to manage changes, and lack of mass change action (perform a change simultaneously on multiple BOMs) are its downfalls. Sometimes Arena is a great tool, other times it pulls us down and limits our ability to do more and do better.

We can manage projects with users attached. We can house all of the images for the plant—just an excellent system to hold checks and balances for a life safety device to be reviewed.

I think that Arena is very well suited for companies who create many prototypes and need to track the changes they make according to the results they find. I think it may be less appropriate for other departments (marketing/finance) to use, but it works great for all departments in the engineering team.

Arena is well suited to a company that does not want an onsite PLM system and wants to move quickly through implementation and start using the system right away. It is also relatively less expensive than other PLM systems and can grow with your user base.

Arena is well suited for good revision control of documents. These documents include drawings, BOMs, artwork files, reference documents, etc.

For those in Purchasing and Sourcing the costing tools are not integrated very well. Our Sourcing teams keep track off all those costs outside of Arena.

Arena would be great for any organization that would like a detailed history of revision tracking, implementation tracking. The historical tracking and being able to see exactly when things were implemented is absolutely a lifesaver when being audited by third-party agencies. This is not a very basic system however, you need buy-in from the entire department or the functionality is lost.

Arena is great for managing complex products with many parts. The "where used" function helps you see how a change in one part affects the rest of the product. In addition, the redline feature allows users to see what changes were made between revisions. The change order history allows users to understand the reasoning behind those changes.

Arena is well suited for large organizations that have information to be stored over large geos and different platforms. Arena has limited integration with CAD software, unable to push information onto drawing and cannot store information on a local cache.

Arena is well suited for document management and building BOMs for products. Organization involvement for approval on certain items is wonderful. It's a lot harder for someone to ignore an approval when an item will actually not get approved vs. just pushing it through to meet a deadline. Forces awareness on reviewers.
Probably not as useful for small companies, or where non-complex products are being organized.

Arena is a one-stop-shop for all the PLM activities. It is easy and offers nice history tracking. It allows us to add suppliers to the project and allows them to be in continuous sync on any changes made.

Arena is well suited for large quantities of items and also where changes can impact many different people or departments. Where parts are more one-off custom, the process can be a little long and time consuming if we only plan on using a part once. It is nice the application is web-based but this makes it quite slow most of the time.

I work mainly with small businesses and Arena seems very good for this size business. It's easy to learn and use. The interface to get data from Arena into an ERP system is difficult to automate - so for businesses that require lots of interface between Arena and an ERP system, Arena needs to be looked at more closely for limitations in this area.

I'd recommend it to anyone who is currently using Excel/Google sheets to manage BOMs. Arena becomes your one place where not only the BOM resides but also all attached files/drawings/datasheets etc. are. This becomes really useful for the team to keep track of where the files are. However, I took out one point because as always, if you want to be super flexible, then in those cases, working via email + Excel is the way to go as Arena could take some time to set-up.

Arena would be well suited for a parts database. If somebody would ask me to choose between Arena and the previous similar programs I used, I would recommend Arena. It is best used for medium-sized companies. It is less appropriate for small companies because it requires too much set-up.
