My organization uses Articulate in order to meet two important aspects of the employee training process. Those are: quick effective training that is cost saving. Articulate is perfect for this because eLearning saves money and time in respect to classroom training.
  • User friendly even for inexperienced elearning administrators
  • Easy to use
  • Creates all kinds of published content (applicable for mobile and desktops)
  • Content interaction with user
  • Able to use all sorts of multimedia
  • More animation options
  • Better internet explorer compability of published content
  • More publishing options
  • Better preview options
Articulate is well suited when you're on a tight schedule and need to produce quick eLearning content. It is possible to create simple presentation content in couple of clicks. It is less appropriate when trying to create content with advanced animations because the tool does not provide enough animation options.

I use Articulate Storyline to create e-learning for my clients. It's the one development tool I've chosen to specialize in. It's relatively easy to use; yet gives me enough depth to create a wide variety of effective training pieces.
  • Easy to learn. The learning curve to get going with Articulate Storyline and produce something usable is very short. But once you're ready for more depth - it's there.
  • It's stable. I can rely on it to be there when I need it and don't spend time having to deal with support issues.
  • It's a product that comes with its own community of users who are always offering up great ideas, free course assets, and great peer interaction. Is the community built into the software itself? No. Does using the community help you make far better courses in Storyline because it helps you be a better designer? You bet.
  • It would be great to have more than one Storyline file open at once. You can technically do it, but it involves opening an additional instance of the program for each additional Storyline file you want open simultaneously. Not a big deal, but it would be a nice feature to add.
As with any e-learning development tool, you'd want to establish the intended output before choosing it. If I had a particular device or environment I was going to launch it in, I'd do a test to be sure my result was going to be what I expected.

I use Articulate Storyline for training my students in various areas - using the editor they will be using for developing software, explaining basic programming concepts, and others. Another somewhat different and highly interactive course addresses how a teaching assistant or teacher can deal with a case of plagiarism.
  • Storyline is highly flexible, regarding its support for layers, the powerful yet easy to use concepts of triggers and helpful interactive elements such as lightbox slides and markers. These make creating interactive and attractive content easy and even fun!
  • The use of variables allows for another great deal of freedom in designing a course. Whether you only want to store the user's name and gender, or want to keep track of decisions or score is up to you. Storyline also lets you modify the content of slides based on the values of the variables, so you do not have to duplicate content but can simply vary it (hiding, showing, or modifying content) based on the value of some variable(s).
  • The integrated photographic character (more can be bought) and the sketched characters are highly flexible, provided in different poses and facial expressions. Adapting them to look as you want them to is done in a snap - and can, again, be changed based on a variable that tracked what the user has done before.
  • The main drawback for me personally is that there is no Mac OS X version of Storyline, forcing me to start up a VM (which slows down the computer) whenever I work on my content. I understand that developing a Mac version would be a lot of work - but having one would make my life that much easier.
Windows (native or in a VM) is required and thus a hard criterion. If you are interested in developing e-learning content - or showcasing your product - with ease, high flexibility, the chance for relevant interactivity, check out Storyline's three day demo and its huge support including tutorials and free content on their web page.

We are using Articulate Storyline 2 to develop eLearning modules for our staff and other stakeholders. This includes compliance based modules and modules focused on building knowledge and awareness on products and services.

We have recently been implementing a non-linear learning methodology which allows learners to access the information they need as and when they need it.

  • Online community for support is amazing (eLearning hero's).
  • Content is made interesting by using customised interactions.
  • Really easy to pick up and use.
  • Videos are not as clear as they could be.
Articulate Storyline is a great way to rapidly develop quality eLearning tools. It is not so great for video.

As a multimedia developer I use Storyline every day. It has become my go to tool because of the ability that it gives me to be able to create the eLearning that I want. We use it at Pure Learning because it is so simple to use. It may take awhile to get your head around it, but once you get into it it is really simple and it allows you to create the nice simple interactions that you want the leaner to go through. At Pure learning it is used throughout the entire organization. It is used by our writers to mock up their ideas and by our multimedia developers to create the entire projects. It is also sometimes used by our graphic designers to work out the best animations to have and how we will mock up the user interface and how intuitive it will be to the user.

Storyline addresses the problem that there are not that many other tools out there to make eLearning and what is out there is pretty crap to be honest. They are either cloud options which are slow and have limited storage or they are like Captivate which can get overly complicated to make the most simple of interactions.

  • It is easy to use.
  • Interactions are simple to make.
  • It has good built-in features.
  • It has limiting factors when it comes to built-in functions.
  • It can be hard to debug.
  • You cant select multiple variables to copy and paste or delete.
It is well suited to a variety of scenarios. I would recommend it to my colleagues because it is the quickest program to learn and it will fill all of the requirements.

I've been using Storyline since a few months after it was introduced. It is the eLearning development tool we use 90% of the time. I've found it easy to use and it lets me create almost any interaction I can imagine.

It helps us create eLearning courses quickly with an amazing amount of learning interaction. I especially appreciate the fact that I have had very few issues with it and when I do, Articulate usually has an answer and a workaround.
  • Enables you to create complex interactions using states, triggers, variables, and layers.
  • Provides excellent tutorials, free templates, blogs, and more via the Articulate Community.
  • Excellent customer support.
  • I'd like to see more animation options. I'm spoiled by the variety in PowerPoint and would love more of that type of animation.
  • I'd like to have the capability to show the Notes for each layer in the Notes tab. Now we have to put the Notes for the main layer and all other layers into one and that confuses learners.
None that I can think of. It's so customizable, you can do almost anything.

We use Articulate Storyline to produce eLearning modules on many aspects of the company's business. Recently I accidentally found a new application. I could create an interactive menu and fit it into corporate SharePoint site.
  • Most of all I like interactive opportunities (states, triggers, variables) which allow me to develop a rich learning experience.
  • The ability to modify the look and feel of the player is also a great feature.
  • Recent upgrades to Storyline 2 brought lots of new animation features and triggers. Sliders give the more natural control for users.
  • I need more capable design tools built in Storyline. For example, there is no blurring option or deleting picture background.
  • Articulate should bring more opportunities for mobile learning design.
  • In order to create more powerful user experiance I need additional options to operate variables, for example to process formulas (not only "-" and "+")
You can use Storyline output anywhere you need toadd interactivity. It can generate flash and html5 output which can be imported to LMS, webpages, SharePoint etc.

The professional development department uses Articulate Storyline to develop high quality online continuing medical education for 130 paramedics. The software allows for professional results from non-programmers. The online continuing medical education (CME) that is developed allows education to be delivered consistently with a lower cost per person.
  • The online community for support is the best in the industry.
  • Customized interactions make the content interesting for participants.
  • The learning curve is not too steep. You can be up and running in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Access to system variables
Storyline 2 is particularly suited to beginner level elearning developers. It will allow them to get going immediately and expand their capabilities as confidence increases.

E-learning presents an exciting opportunity to meet the evolving training and development needs of an ever changing and diverse workforce. Storyline is showing itself to be a powerful and reliable tool for doing this, allowing the for the production of courses that meet and exceed customers expectations.
  • Accuracy of screen capturing. (it captures subtle animations in software very well)
  • Relatively easy to pick up and start using
  • Scenes make it easy to collate and manage a variety of course resources.
  • Screen captures can take a very long time to save
  • Sometimes the connection s between slides between scenes are not always clear
  • Captivate hides the windows tool bar at full screen
Screen capturing is well done in the end but the process can be very long compared to other software options. This is a key consideration if you are trying to simulate a software application or web page.

We use Articulate Storyline to deliver learning material for flipped classrooms in a post secondary institution. The purpose is to deliver content in an interactive and engaging way online, then bring students into the classroom for group work and hands on activities. This reduces the amount of classroom time needed, and makes that classroom time more productive.
  • Storyline is incredibly flexible. It incorporates a wide range of media formats (images, videos, etc), if you want to add a quiz you have a wide range of question formats (drag and drop, text, etc), and the Triggers and States features let you customize what happens based on the user's actions. You can basically build a choose-your-own-adventure activity.
  • The basics of Storyline are easy to learn. When you open Storyline for the first time, you can immediately start building simple activities with minimal training. That said, you'll want to refer to the online video tutorials to learn the advanced features.
  • Once you've created an activity, you can publish it in multiple formats, including web format, mobile, SCORM, and Word. I usually publish an activity to both web format and Word (which I then convert to PDF). The Word/PDF version serves as a transcript of the interactive version for people with auditory disabilities.
  • Learning the more advanced features of Storyline does take some time. When I was learning Storyline, I was able to set aside about 45 minutes at the beginning of each day to watch 1 or 2 tutorial videos and then practice what I had just learned. I got up to speed very quickly this way! And once you have some advanced skills with Storyline, that's where the fun really begins!
  • Some of the output options aren't ideal. For example, you can publish an activity to a DVD, but the output is an exe file, which some computers won't run. Also the Word doc output is fairly terrible looking. (Although, if you have a little skill with Word styles, you can easily fit it up.)
Do you want to create an interactive learning activity? Are you prepared to rework your content into a format that allows users to take the reins and decide how they want to move through the content (rather than you giving them the content in a linear fashion)? Do you have time to invest in learning how to use the advanced features of this software? If yes, then I would highly recommend Storyline.

Articulate Storyline was chosen to be used in our company, after we tried several softwares to create eLearning content that was easy, fast, cheap and compatible with our eLearning platform. This tool is used by a single department in our organization. This software covers all kind of requests from business lines, product presentations, software simulations, and quizzing.
  • You can easily and quickly create a presentation, course or software simulation.
  • You can learn this tool quickly from video tutorials posted on the forum.
  • You can download free templates.
  • More options and triggers on timeline.
The first question is - what is the price of the software? The second question is - does it cover all requests? Is the maintenance price per license or per month, etc.? On the other hand, how easy is it to use? Does it need specific training or certification?

Storyline is the authoring tool the training team uses to create eLearning for our organization. Our employees are spread out across the country so like many others, eLearning is a method of training that helps keep costs down. Safety is an important part of our work and our culture. The courses I design in Storyline allow the user to make choices just like they would in the field so training has engagement, not just a reader for a screen full of words. Being able to engage the learner, makes them remember more and in the end may keep them safer on the job.
  • As a novice with software authoring tools and no coding ability, Storyline's basic platform was easy to learn. It has a PowerPoint type look and feel so it's less intimidating than many other tools.
  • The tutorials provided on the Articulate website quickly helped me move from basic slides to interactive visuals and question elements. They are available any time I am which was perfect!
  • While not part of the software itself, the Articulate community is beyond what I have ever seen for software I use. Other users answer questions, share their work, create templates, and give out information that helps me be successful with my eLearning courses.
  • While it is easy to use, there is still ramp up time for the non-technical person like myself. Seeing others' cool work and realizing how many elements are in it can be daunting. It just takes time and some study to get some of the more complicated interactions down.
  • The product is a good value for the price. I would have like a couple more characters to have been included.
We primarily use this product for computer based learning. It will publish your course for a tablet or mobile phone but is not automatically reactive. For quick mobile design, I might be lured into another tool that lends itself toward performance support. If you are a one-stop-shop designer that has to create eLearning it would be the product I would recommend. You will create engaging, visually stimulating, courses that meet the needs of your team and that does not create extra work for you.

We use Storyline in the Clinical & Product Education Department, and I believe our HR training group is also using it. We are now able to develop more complex e-learning projects within our fixed timelines because Storyline makes it easy to do. Instead of deciphering coded IDs and actions, just read the trigger in plain English, love it.
  • Building complex interactions, allowing learners to practice new skills or application of new information, is easy and straightforward.
  • Creating branching and scenario-based e-learning is also easy and straightforward - I can see the branching overview easily and have the opportunity to use layers within a slide to manage detailed feedback.
  • If you want to get even more complex, as long as you plan sufficiently and/or have some coding help, Storyline can support a lot of additional functionality.
  • There's no text-to-speech engine, so we are using a very odd combination of software & strange workflow to sort that out.
  • There's no way to publish as a movie/video file, so some projects we're still completing in Captivate.
  • Also we've found that recording audio directly into Storyline limits your options - if you later export that audio, you will get one long file, of the original recording, without any of the edits made within the software.
Consider an audio editing software, and potentially a text-to-speech engine, separately. If your plan is to provide movie/video output, this is not the right choice. Plan ahead and test any advanced interactions are possible with the HTML5 publish before doing the full development - some things work really well on a desktop with Flash, and don't work well via mobile/HTML5.

I have used Articulate Storyline with many clients. At one client, we decided to move all of our elearning from another (competing) elearning tool to standardize on Storyline. The reasons for this were twofold. First, the support for the product was vastly superior to it's competitors. The second reason was that the team of 7 could become much more productive in Storyline in a few months than after 3 years with the competing product.

As an elearning tool it is very capable and offers highly valued features. It exports to Word for creating documentation for SME reviews and/or print alternates to online learning. For learning departments using Powerpoint, it has a very good import utility, but it should be clear that the use of Powerpoint is not required for the tool. For high-level developers or programmers, the tool allows custom Javascript to be written to extend the tool's functionality to the ideas and capabilities of the user. It publishes to all major standards, including the emerging xAPI standard.
  • Simplicity and functionality- the tool is powerful, but the differentiator for the product isn't the power itself, but the fact that users come up to speed and get so productive in the tool in a short time. The learning curve is very low.
  • Superb support- All software will encounter a problem at some point, so support is key. Articulate support is second-to-none.
  • Community- beyond support is a large community that offers templates and tutorials that enhance your experience with the tool.
  • Responsive- this is a matter of perspective. On one hand, responsive sites are becoming the norm, and sites are arranging themselves to better fit on a device's available space and orientation. On the other, if a designer creates a software simulation or a presentation design ("slide") for a specific presentation, rearranging those assets is not following the designer's intent (this is why Articulate scales, but doesn't have true responsiveness). I see both sides, but may want to see some options to set breakpoints to arrange items for different sizes or orientations in future versions.
  • Articulate is an early adopter of xAPI, and pretty standard features are reporting in xAPI streams, but seeing expansion of xAPI options in triggers would be an amazing feature set to expand
  • Wish I had more to say, but those are the only things I could think of after building over 100 courses in the tool.
The only elearning/performance support scenario I can think of that Storyline is not ideally suited for is an eHelp system. There are some tools on the market that are better suited for this niche. In looking at eHelp options, however, I do want to ensure that Storyline assets can be put into a larger eHelp system solution.

About four years ago at the suggestion of one of our learning facilitators we purchased Captivate, due to the difficulty in learning this software it was not used efficiently. After researching other software I discovered Articulate. We began by purchasing Studio and used it for about a year until Storyline was introduced. This was the smoothest transition ever, it's so easy to use and if there is ever an issue you have the E-Learning Community and E-Learning Blogs. Since our purchase we have consolidated a large amount of training into eLearning courses saving money and time employees have used traveling to classes (we have branches all over Atlanta). Now we are getting into mobile courses so we have the option of training on the go. We could not be more excited on the direction we are going thanks to Articulate!
  • Ease of use.
  • The features of Storyline such as triggers, variables, and buttons without having to know flash or HTML.
  • Works great with our LMS.
  • The ease of importing video and editing all in one location.
  • Ability to add music that would run the entire course instead of per slide.
  • When copying and pasting, the bullets do not carry over the same font color.
  • More characters would be nice.
We have not found any instances or scenarios in which Storyline has not been adaptable for our use. Key questions to consider would be what are you wanting to do with the software and how to you want to provide it to your audience ex: LMS, Intranet, classroom, etc.

  • Adaptability.
  • SCORM compliance.
  • Lower price point.
Articulate is a great product for both new e-learning authors and veterans.

It is used by one department to create modules for the entire organization including associates in over 600 stores. The bulk of the modules are used to distribute product knowledge and enhance selling skills. Additional modules address the use of our various business software programs. We also use it to create informational modules that address issues specific to franchise and retail organizations.
  • Storyline is versatile. You can create a quick module when starting out with Storyline. Then as you increase your skill level, it grows with you.
  • Storyline handles variables and conditional statements very well. Being able to build logic into my courses has become standard for me now.
  • The prebuilt options like buttons, hotspots, zooms, and states makes me look like a whiz. So easy to use.
  • It would be nice to have the ability to change a quiz question to a different type. For example, change a quiz question from True/False to Multiple Choice without retyping the whole question.
  • Would be nice if they added advanced video editing features so that it could be done right from within the program.
  • Would be nice if they added a remove background from an image feature similar to what PowerPoint has. Would make it quicker than taking the image out to another editing program.
If you are planning to create a significant number of modules, choose Storyline. If you anticipate using logic to create more advanced features in your modules, choose Storyline. If you plan to rarely use an authoring tool, you may want to stick with something simpler. Will you use it enough to make the investment in money and time worthwhile?

I use Articulate Storyline every day to create courses for my clients. I appreciate the bright interface and the many tools available to help me with creating interactive and engaging courses. In particular, trigger options. Triggers allow me to design and create interactions that are just not possible in other popular elearning programs. I enjoy creating custom drag and drop activities outside of the freeform and default quiz options. The change state triggers make this easy and fun. Another great feature I love using are sliders. Sliders are incredibly versatile. They can be used to show before and after changes, data processes, interactive timelines, step by step progressions and so much more. The good news about sliders is one can add multiple “steps” not just two steps.

In a nutshell, engaging elearning is not only possible with Storyline but easy too. Storyline helps course designers to push the limits of what’s possible with course design. It helps designers bust out of the tell me-tell me and bullet trap into creating innovative elearning. Working in Storyline is a real joy and it’s fun. I love discovering ways of developing really cool elearning courses! I can’t say that about other applications.

  • Language translations options
  • Trigger and variable options
  • Dockable panels
  • Graphics editing
  • Applying state changes to multiple objects at once
  • There are instances in which I need to replace several of the same images on a slide at once. For example, a marker to show a location. If I right-click on an image, I have the option to "change image or picture." It would be great if I could select all those images at once and change them as opposed to replacing each one individually. I can't do that now.
If another elearning designer/developer asks me what application I recommend for creating courses, I would recommend Articulate Storyline every time. I have no reason to recommend another program. I've worked in other programs and I really love working in Storyline.

Articulate Storyline 2 is used by the training and development team. It is a flexible tool that helps develop not only technical training but also soft skills. It is important that we develop proficiency with a single tool as opposed to trying different tools for different scenarios.
  • When recording technical training I love the ability to edit individual slides to show what you want.
  • The ability to develop in layers provides great flexibility as to the amount of options that you can provide on a single slide.
  • Triggers and variables allow you to control the user experience and display content/navigate based on the users responses. Leading to much richer solutions.
  • Editing a movie can be a little labor intensive and slow at times especially when there are a lot of slides to edit
The only issue I have currently is that it does not have an adaptable option. If this is important to you then you should not use it.

It is used to write eLearning in house for compliance and some technical learning sessions. It is also increasingly being used for developing softskills - i.e. embedding knowledge after a face-to-face event. We have topics including: grammar, anti-money-laundering, pensions, information security, sales etc.

It is used by our learning and development team here and then made available to all staff for reference.

  • Easy-to-use: it is similar to PowerPoint in terms of interface, but obviously does a lot more from an eLearning point of view.
  • It publishes content to HTML - this makes it really easy to deploy training to global offices from one site in the UK.
  • It has some great built in features which make creating interactive/engaging learning really easy.
  • Great for creating branching scenarios - where certain actions lead to differing results.
  • Fantastic online help in the form of the eLearning Heroes community run by Articulate - always on hand to help and provide loads of free material to help with projects.
  • Would benefit from more varied motion options - to enable some cartoon-making ability.
  • Would like to see a better selection of online shapes to avoid having to create your own.
  • Make it easier for users to report bugs/suggest changes.
Storyline can be used for all types of learning interventions, and it is easy to produce themed/or stylized output by subject matter. It is ideally suited to compliance and technical sessions but with an understanding of simple design, engagement and gamification, it can be used for all types of learning. It is easy to amend output too, if things change.

We are a agency that produces content for other clients. We meet clients needs by building highly interactive solutions using Articulate Storyline. Our business is built on Articulate Storyline without it we would not be successful.

Articulate Storyline is an intuitive, software package and you can develop immersive eLearning very quickly. We use it to meet any and all of our clients needs.
  • Easy to build interactive objects such as sliders, drag and drops and quizzes.
  • The interface is designed to be similar to PowerPoint so you immediately feel at home.
  • All interactions are controlled using trigger and layers, other software makes it difficult to interact with certain elements.
  • This is a blank canvas approach to development and anything is possible.
  • Improve the HTML 5 content so it is truly multi browser.
  • Improve the player.
  • Some objects could have more customisations (such as the scroll panel).
Storyline works well in a small company as well as a large company, it is great for developing highly interactive content and you are only limited by your imagination. Truly one of the best products on the market and well worth your consideration.

In a multi-state healthcare organization, eLearning is essential for training and compliance needs. Frequent updates to the electronic health records software demand quick turnaround of technical information and interactive practice; medical standards and guidelines must be communicated to clinical professionals in accessible and engaging ways; HIPAA and OSHA regulations require annual review. Staff can complete these requirements as their busy schedules allow.
  • Articulate Storyline allows video screen capture! This is essential when providing training modules about updated Electronic Health Records software.
  • Articulate Storyline allows non-programmers (like me) to use elegant tools for complex design elements; variables and states allow branching logic and easy design of custom interactions.
  • Although the link to product and community help is excellent, in my ideal world, context-sensitive help would be accessible within the program.
  • Graphical editing (as recommended by Articulate experts within PowerPoint) would be nice within Storyline itself.
  • Tiny picky thing - In Story View, I would like to be able to reorder and renumber scenes.
  • Some content imported from Articulate Presenter - interactions and quizzes need significant design tweaking.
Since the Articulate products are all I've used, the only questions I would ask would be to differentiate between choosing Presenter and Storyline. If the user is comfortable with learning new tools, Storyline is the best choice in my opinion. However, if their primary training mode has been in using PowerPoint, the Presenter would be an ideal transition to eLearning instructional design.

Articulate Storyline is used in my company's learning and development department. It is used to create courses that train our retail employees and company leadership in areas of safety, customer service, product knowledge, and leadership development.
  • Easy to use
  • Makes great looking and engaging courses
  • Has many cool features
  • Easy to publish content and upload to an LMS
  • Copy paste from Word to Storyline works well but not from Storyline back to Word. I often write in Word and copy into Storyline. I also edit/reshape my images in Word and copy to Storyline.
  • More stock photos of people with the base version of the software. More cartoon avatars.
  • Better ability to publish to a Word document for reviewing with SMEs. Published output is wonky.
Storyline2 is very well suited for a variety of scenarios. I have used the program to create product knowledge training, leadership development, instructional videos, technical training. It is a very versatile software program. If you're looking for an eary to use authoring tool that has a lot of power and creates awesome courses, choose Articulate. Love it!
