We use Asana to track bugs and manage projects ranging from traditional business to business clients to home decor and fashion brands. Everything from design & development to ongoing marketing and merchandising. We are all working from home so it is the cornerstone of our daily effort. It makes it easy to collaborate.
  • Manage Projects.
  • Track Issues.
  • Increase Efficiency.
Cons
  • Would be great if there was a desktop app
  • Easier sharing controls - sometimes issues don't get assigned / or are private
  • Bite sized learning to learn quickly / easily. Superhuman does a great job at this.
We are a funny size. Probably a bit too small to be the optimal users of this platform, but we do like Asana and see the value. Sometimes it feels slow - or maybe that's just my typing, but it's just hard to move fast enough in business, in general, these days. They are always trying to make things easier and faster.

Real task management and collaboration, not just document tracking/control

Asana is being used in the Marketing and Communications department to manage and track our campaigns and quarterly content schedules, including social media tactics. Asana, an online task management tool, is used in conjunction with Google Drive integration (same with Dropbox) to make sure tasks, projects, and more importantly document management stays organized for everyone within the department. Without Asana, email would be the main communication/task/document management tool. When you do implement Asana, there has to be one dedicated champion and a second level person to help keep the tool running smoothly. Just like a file system or a shared drive, if you don't monitor it, anything that you save to it will be hard to find and become useless.
  • Everyone on the team can monitor the progress of all tasks.
  • Document control is managed with Asana as the front-end and Google Drive (or Dropbox) as the back-end.
  • There is no top-level admin therefore everyone can feel empowered to push tasks/projects along.
  • Documenting processes is simple.
  • Mobile app on both iOS and Android.
Cons
  • If you don't have a champion, the tool won't be used. Just like a shared drive, it has to be kept clean and organized or no one will use it.
  • No Gantt chart functionality.
  • Printing customization doesn't exist - i.e. doesn't show sub-tasks.
Asana could be used for a brainstorming tool but it really shines when tasks are defined, people are assigned and the project needs to be monitored and completed on time.

Asana is used by our organization to keep track of tasks and to manage product features to be implemented in the software. It is also used to assign tasks to other people and maintain a monthly task calendar. It is used across the whole organization. It solves the business program of managing people and the product at the same time i.e. project management.
  • Asana does organizing and keeping track of tasks really well. It has smart views which allow you to see and customize a smart view for tasks such as recently completed, sort by deadline, sort by assignee etc.
  • Asana does a good job of allowing people to collaborate. The fact that I can comment and ask question on other people's task is very helpful to me. This removes the need of multiple emails in a way that everyone in the organization or part of the team can see it. Being able to add attachment is also really helpful.
  • Asana does an incredible job of setting privacy and securing my tasks such that tasks in one team of the organization cannot be viewed by others. I can decide to make it publis or private. This is very useful as it allows me to keep tasks secure and effective at the same time.
Cons
  • I hate that Asana does not have time keeping functionality inbuilt. I use Asana with lot of contractors and I would love if there was a time keeping function.
  • Asana sends me a lot of notifications. Sometimes it is super helpful but often I opt out of notifications. I would love to see if Asana can optimize or change the notification frequency in a unique way.
  • Asana does not allow me to chat if the other user or team members are online. I would love to have that feature instead of just commenting.
Asana is very well suited if you want a lighter project management tool with high user - friendliness. It is less suited if you want something super advanced. For example, if you want to create burn rate, calculate velocity, or create agile or waterfall graphs. A key question to ask is : do you want a highly advanced project management tool with steeper learning curve or you can manage with lighter one for now?

I am a web designer/developer and I work with various clients and numerous web projects. Asana allows us to identify tasks that need completed and to have a discussion about those tasks so that we make sure we are on the same page. It is also very helpful for documenting discussions and agreements.
  • Creating tasks - it is easy to list what needs to be done.
  • Setting due dates - it is also easy to list when those tasks should be done. It also reminds you when due dates are approaching.
  • Discussion of tasks - it is easy to maintain a comment thread on those tasks.
Cons
  • I would like to see a the ability for tasks to be created under "projects" or "to do lists" so that when that when reviewing to do items they are in a section isolated from the other tasks. This might be terminology thing. I know you can create sub lists under tasks, but for some reason this is difficult for my clients to see and remember.
  • The priority headings are not very helpful. Should be able to group things like I mentioned above.
I think it is excellent for working on any collaborative team. Less technical clients have some difficulty with it, but it could be useful to them as well.

Asana is used between our NYC and LA offices to track milestones for designers. I as a strategist set a timeline for graphic materials that are due for several marketing tactics nationally and use Asana as a way to track the work that is being done and the milestones/due dates that need to be hit by the desingers to ensure all deliverables are on time for delivery and execution. Asana is only used by the Digital Media Group at DIRECTV as far as I know.
  • Due to the fact that our team is bi-coastal, we needed a tool that allowed the East and West Coast teams to communicate deadlines without the need to worry about servers and their slowness to transmit/copy information. Asana is a great tool to do that, since it is web based there is no need for downloads, or worry of server crashes, which often happen here. And of course we love the price...FREE!
  • Asana allows us to assign tasks to team members, which they can in-turn inject sub-tasks within, this helps us track where along the process everyone is to make sure we are all hitting our deadlines. The simplicity of the site makes it easy for anyone to use and quickly learn the tool.
  • Real time interaction is a huge help. Comments populate instantly which ensures we aren't missing any questions or concenrs and helps eliminate exesive emails.
  • Asana is a great product to increase communication within a team and requires very little time to learn, unlike some other Project management tools, which tend to be a lot less user friendly.
Cons
  • I would like to see a calendar incorporated into the tool.
  • I would like it to be able to integrate with other tools we use to make the communication flow a little more well rounded.
  • Ability to create Gant charts based on tasks.
Asana is well suited for use of product management with multiple users working and contributing to the same project. The inability to assign deadlines to tasks within a project makes it a little stressful on large projects. The fact that you can enter unlimited tasks is a huge pro.
