Management of the company is poor at best. They do not care about the clients unless they are huge. We have been bounced between accounts managers at least 4 times in the last 2 years. Ability to resolve account issue is poor, most times you do not get an acceptable response.

Asigra is solely used as a Backup product. We use Asigra to backup servers (physical and virtual), applications and desktops/laptops. Asigra is used when its placement and product limitations fit a clients requirements. We have been able to address the ability to automate process and backup set creation using the Asigra platform.
  • Templating of backup sets and client settings
  • Mass deployment
  • Redundency
  • Management
  • All around features and ability to quick add new features
  • User interfaces
If you need a quick (less than 15 minutes) RTO then Asigra may not be the product for you. Asigra does file level backups very well but is lacking when it comes to VMware backups and restores.

Asigra does well at file level backups. It is great at controlling the life cycle of file generations along with meeting requirements of long life retention.

We would have taken the Management at Asigra into consideration as the Management is not very customer aware and will not work with you for Training. They refuse to correct know issues and training short comings and don't care that their documentation is different/wrong.
  • Implemented in-house
Yes
Each part of the application requires a different setup and configuration. Its not just a tier deployment, it is a do this and then do something else different. The product is not consistent between its sub parts.
Change management was minimal
  • Poor documentation
  • No consistency
Documentation and consistency is a big problem and requires extended knowledge to understand.
  • Online training
  • In-person training
  • Self-taught
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation.
They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.
No, manuals contradict itself and common knowledge is learned through trial and error of the product. Training is required as the manuals are extremely lacking and best practices are not made easily available without a support case.
Very complex, Training is required to use the product.
Go through training, but keep in mind their training is full of errors and misinformed information which they refuse to resolve.
Some - we have done small customizations to the interface
You have to pay to be able to modify the interface.

You are required to pay for support unless you are an ACE.
Support is very triage based now, for the price it should be full service support and not a cold hand off for a support case.

  • Each part of asigra requires an additional application to be installed to manage

Integration is not easy and will most likely require their professional services as they did a poor job making integration easy/turn key.
Management is unwilling to work with you. Our account manager changes every 3+/- months due to them being fired or quieting.
Management doesn't care. They speak about truth and visibility but lie to their customers and scam them out of money every chance they get.
None.
Be caution of their training. It is not training, just a test. They give you poorly documented manuals which are included in the product and then charge you thousands to take a test. The manuals are not accurate and in most cases contradict themselves.

Upgrades sometimes go smoothly, just wait until they have patches for a new release. Their releases are normally buggy.

Over 6 consecutive years our Asigra Backend had 99.99% uptime and provided 7x24 data restore availability. Software is robust in operations, provides N+1 node architecture to protect against failure of half of the nodes (majority of the nodes still up) and software based replication to protect against data loss across two geographically independent datacenter locations. Why not 10 points? Some major upgrades still require short downtime within a planned maintenance windows.

We chose Asigra to provide cloud backup service to our Managed Services clients. Structured also uses it as our primary backup solution. It is agent-less, fully licensed, and can meet the DR needs of any company size.
  • Offsite backups with compression and deduplication for maximum size savings
  • Onsite backups for lower value data
  • Offsite archive of old backup data to lower tiered storage and cost
  • Centralized management web interface for simple operation oversight
  • Offsite, On-premise, or hybrid deployment
  • Replication feature for back end site redundancy
  • Very secure product, loses minor flexibility
Works best where 1 or more systems can perform backups per site. Because of security, data is encrypted when backed up. Data must be restored to be accessible. Other, less secure products, may allow to browse backup data contents and mount without restoring.
  • Compression and deduplication decreases required back end storage
  • Self service restores reduce helpdesk calls
  • Various deployment options to meet RPO/RTO for any budget
Best of all options, covers most if not all scenarios, granular backup, scheduling, and retention options. Provides self-service restores, centralized web management interface, and granular reporting.

Managed Services helpdesk that provides support to 50 clients, many of whom use Asigra as an on premise, cloud, or hybrid backup solution. Regular auditing helps show growth, backup errors, trends, backup and restore activities to management to show value and return on investment. Self service of Asigra lets users restore their files without having to open a helpdesk case.
10
Knowledge of backup activities and methodologies, familiarity with backup software and native APIs/tools used by common applications to protect live data.
  • Offsite backup and recovery
  • Application protection
  • Maximum compression and deduplication to reduce storage usage
  • Backup and restore of non-Windows platform data
  • Self service of other MSPs accessing our infrastructure
  • Use object store as compatible S3 target for archive backup data
  • Package tiers with automatic archiving of backup data
  • Replication to multiple geographical data centers
  • Remote VDR for hot spares of virtual machines
We have tried and used many products. Asigra met all of our objectives and was the best fit for our ideal clients. Asigra works well with SMB and enterprise environments. All components have redundancy options so you can build a true "no single point of failure" system.
N+1 design with fast DR in case of a rare system outage.

We are Service Providers reselling Asigra for Private Cloud deployments and running our own Public Cloud vault that runs backups for various organizations ranging from small environments comprising of desktop/laptops to enterprises with MS Exchange, databases and file servers.

For our customers, it works as an ideal data protection solution for its capabilities of supporting multiple environments, features and public cloud allows remote data protection also.

  • Provides capability of local backups while maintaining remote copies on cloud to ensure faster recoveries of recent data and remote protection of all data.
  • Helps reduce cost of long term retention by leveraging the BLM functionality.
  • It does not need specialized hardware for it to work. Customers and Service Providers can choose their own infrastructure and do not need to rely on any OS or storage based replication even for deploying replication of backups.
  • Supports wide range of environments including virtual environments with remarkable features like remote VDR with incremental restores.
  • Image level VM backups need to quickly help doing file level restores.
  • Need support for larger environments like Sybase etc. as these databases are catching the market along with SAP.
  • Better deduplication on Oracle databases.

I have been working with backup solutions for around 14 years now. Asigra is one solution that has a wide range of features and functionalities while retaining the simplicity of usage and making it a very simple product to learn and start using.

What is also important is the post sales support wherein the product code is done so well that you rarely need to engage Asigra's support team for escalations and support calls. On top of it, Asigra technical support works very well to ensure you are taken care of well & quickly. This is one of the most important things that you look for while evaluating any product as you need to have the right people around you when you are in trouble.

  • Better Customer pre-sales engagement through Asigra tools like LAN discovery & Statistical backups.
  • Better Customer Service.
  • Better reputation in market.
  • Faster lead conversion.
  • emc,Symantec

To be precise, you don't get one single product that has all the features that you have in Asigra.

To begin with is being hardware independent not binding you with a particular hardware. You don't need to worry about licensing based on no. or type of devices, databases & processors OR even features. All of them get licensed the single way.

Features like Agentless architecture (quicker deployment & support), BLM (low cost of retention), inbuilt replication (No hardware or OS dependent DR) & Remote VDR (Automatic incremental recovery of a VM), support for various devices & databases are exceptionally well and I don't see any other product having all these in one.

The entire organization is mandated to use the product for their financial, sales and support data. These include business functions: Customer Support, Corporate Finance, Sales & Marketing AND Operations.

They just need to be Engineers that have the desire to work with a good technology. They should be having some basic knowledge about storage & backup functionality. They don't need any special skills to support Asigra.

It is an added advantage to have worked with a couple of other products as that helps understand what is better in Asigra and appreciate it more.

  • VM protection for a News Channel.
  • Protecting PACS image data for a large hospital.
  • Protecting designs & data for a large real estate company.
  • Backing up PACS image data
  • Local and remote protection for small nursing homes of a large hospital.
  • Oracle database backups for a construction company.

From a business prospective, I am a service provider so I would always renew.

From a technical prospective, there has been enough written about it in earlier questions and this could go endless.

Overall, Asigra is a good organization to work with. They are concerned about what the partner and the customer needs and are always a phone call away to help in any situation. Therefore, apart from technology, you work with people always available to support their claims.

Analysts Report Which helped analyse the product, get more details on the product's acceptance in the market and get feedback on the organization functionality helped us the most.

I would like to first layout my requirement and ask the vendor to confirm if they can be addressed. Then I would like the vendor to specify what can he additionally do for us using his product.

This would be followed by a detailed Proof Of Concept to have a real life experience of the product.

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

Generally not reqd. for Asigra product.

They respond quickly on your request.

They ask for details at the time of logging the support request itself ensuring the first response is not for collecting the basic details only.

They refund you the support request if they find it as a functionality issue.

They follow up on you to ensure you are satisfied and happy with the response and resolution that they have provided.

No

Well they generally do it every time.

Once such situation occurred when we had trouble backing up Oracle backups for a customer and their team helped us understand the functionality better and work with the customer DBA team to set it right in a few hours.

  • Configuring backup volumes i.e. extensible storage.
  • Configuring backup jobs.
  • Implementing the basic product itself.
  • Oracle DB backup configurations are sometimes difficult to handle.

As I have described in various earlier questions, Asigra provides a simple GUI, easy to configure and manage backup jobs, simple recovery interface and you don't need learning cycles to understand the product and its functionalities.

It is more of an on-the-fly easy to use product.

Daymark Solutions is both an Asigra provider and an Asigra consumer. We offer public, hybrid, and private cloud implementations of the product. Daymark utilizes Asigra for all backups, from laptops to servers. Asigra provides automated, offsite, and secure backups for Daymark by protecting Microsoft Windows servers, including Exchange and SQL, as well as virtual file shares on a NetApp filer.
  • Asigra provides well integrated use of the Microsoft APIs to backup Microsoft applications they way Microsoft wants them backed up.
  • Asigra provides lightweight laptop clients with user friendly GUI's, mass deployment options, and small resource consumption.
  • Asigra integrates naturally with NetApp storage arrays, taking advantage of the NetApp APIs to provide snapshot-base backups form the NetApp storage.
  • Asigra operates within the realm of the APIs provided by the application vendors. If there are limitations in the Microsoft or VMWare API, there will be a limitation to how Asigra protects that data.
  • Asigra is currently working on an overhaul on the GUI experience. This overhaul is much needed. They are promising this new GUI hopefully in the next release.
Asigra actually has several flexible deployment options that mean it can protect small and large environments well. It can handle Windows, Linux, VMWare, and whole slew of other types of data.

One of the key things about Asigra is that they do not sell directly to customers. You have to go through an Asigra Partner. That is where the questions should be asked.

Is the service provider SSAE 16 SOC 2 compliant?
Is the service provider utilizing the Asigra replication module to provide two copies of your data?
Does the partner staff Asigra trained and certified professionals?
How does the provider bill? Stored data? Compressed data? Native size?
  • Reduced backup software licensing cost.
  • More efficient offsite protection of data.
  • Regulation compliance
Asigra licensing model is more straight forward than eVault and has an easier user interface.

Asigra is more robust and feature rich than Mozy or Carbonite.

Asigra offers true multi-tenancy, where the Symantec products do not offer such features.

Asigra's feature stack holds water against the other competitors out there. As far as cloud backup goes, it is the most mature cloud backup software on the market. As well as being mature, the security exemplified by the NIST FIPS 140-2 encryption certification is far ahead of its competitors.
  • Asigra is a great entry way into the cloud.
  • Compliance is a tricky thing. Jumping backup software means having to deal with previous copies somehow. Asigra is built for the long haul.
  • Asigra is continuing to increase their feature stack. They have made huge steps in the VM backup in the last 3 years and continue to implement features there.
  • As far as cloud backup software goes, there are many that can do it, but none that do it as well as Asigra.
At the front of Asigra availability is the N+1 capabilities of the DS-System. Multiple nodes that load balance and are fault tolerant giving the DS-System a robust availability offering. The N+1 can survive as long as 50% +1 of the nodes are running.

Data availability is strong via Asigra's replication module. Both bidirectional and unidirectional replication for the DS-System exist. Bidirectional replication requires the MSP to purchase double the licensing. That cost is going to be passed on to the customer. Many MSP's opt for the unidirectional, which requires a manual switch over on the DS-License server to change a replication vault to a production vault. With that being said, Asigra replication is very efficient and allows for multiple, in-region and out-region backup vaults.

The DS-System works best on Linux utilizing PostgreSQL for the backend database. Ideally, this should be clustered. Clustering a PostgreSQL database is not as straight forward as doing it with Microsoft. That adds some administrative overhead and requires some PostgreSQL expertise end users and MSP's have to find.

The Windows DS-Client, the piece doing the backup, can be gridded for a multi-node backup cluster. Unfortunately, the Linux DS-Client cannot be gridded.
