How Avalara Differs From Its Competitors

Additional Capabilities

Yes we use Avalara for tax returns. This saves us several hours a month from having to log into the state websites and enter the amount of sales tax charged to each city and state. Absolutely worth it if you have nexus in more than 1-2 states.

[Avalara] is easy to use, but can get more complicated as situations may require custom scenarios and/or profiles. These can be tricky to get to work correctly and require a lot of experience to understand how they work. I would love to have a call center to talk to customer support on the phone with issues vs. having to submit a ticket and wait for it to be assigned.

The website could be a bit clearer but is mostly good. My biggest issue is when I have to change a transaction to our location (customer picked up the order instead of shipping) I have to go into each line on the transaction to tell it to use the main address. There should be a setup option to default that all your transaction items use the same address.

Avalara is pretty intuitive. There are a lot of reporting capabilities, you can see the tax return information before it's filed and you can always view your usage to ensure that you're within your subscription's allowed usage limits.

It is easy to use, and self explanatory with helpful guides. Some guides need updated after the system has an update. Some of the step by steps are outdated and the buttons they say to click have different names or locations.

I enjoy the reporting Avalara generates. However, they have a lot of reports and some titles can be confusing on which one to download or which information you are looking for. The timely filing without approval is a good feature. I wish they would have some sort of reconciliation report feature.

Easy to navigate interface :
  • Setting up items, locations, or exemptions can be done with a few clicks and/or upload of appropriate documents.
  • The ability to export transactions is the simple click of a button.
  • Reports are easy to access.
  • Nexus notifications are very helpful when determining a location we may have to register for.

At times I am frustrated trying to find a way to sort for particular data. I find Avalara University too basic and find the help feature not that helpful. I have used chat and have been pleased with the knowledge of support people.

Would give a 10 but system does have some hiccups. Avalara will bog down at times and not communicate with the ERP instantly. Would also really like more options for deleting and stopping Certs that are duplicates, fixing cert effective date (other than stopping the cert and creating a new one).
