The software has been widely praised for its ability to address the major problem of phishing and spear-phishing attacks. Users have reported that it proactively intercepts and blocks malicious emails, effectively preventing hackers from taking over. The AI technology behind the software has been highly effective, with no reported false positives so far.

One of the key use cases of this product is to monitor and detect unusual logins and suspicious email rules. Users have found that it provides easy and readable access to suspicious inbox rules, allowing them to quickly identify any potential security threats. Additionally, the software offers a sign-in locations map, which helps users track user sign-ins and detect any unauthorized access.

Another important use case of this software is its effectiveness in blocking spear-phishing, account takeovers, and spoofing attempts. Customers have reported that it has successfully thwarted various forms of phishing emails in Microsoft Exchange for their entire organizations. It can also determine if a Microsoft Exchange account has been taken over by an outside entity, providing an added layer of protection.

Furthermore, the software offers domain fraud protection and catches a large number of quarantined emails from invalid senders. This feature has been particularly helpful in reducing the risk of falling victim to fraudulent activities.

Overall, this product has proven to be a valuable tool in combating phishing and spear-phishing attacks. Its ability to proactively intercept malicious emails, monitor unusual logins, block spoofing attempts, and provide domain fraud protection has made it an essential solution for organizations looking to enhance their cybersecurity measures.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

Barracuda Sentinel goes probing in the users mailboxes and eliminates potential threats. Besides that, it monitors unusual logins and suspicious email rules. The good is that the AI behind really works well. I haven't had any false positives yet. But a lot of junk mail (harmless but potentially dangerous as well) gets caught. Awesome: set and forget.
We recently used it also to setup DMARC correctly and the ease of use is again great.
  • Set and forget
  • Very easy
  • Simple to use dashboard
  • documentation and webinars cover a lot.
  • Small company's don't really benefit from the AI
  • It would be great if some more rule intelligence could be added.
Barracuda Sentinel does what it supposed to do. Stop junkmail in an intelligent way. Junkmail that passes your spamfilters. As an addon it informs you of suspicious mail rules and user logins. I know you can do that with the office 365 tools also, but sentinel makes it easy. Very easy. One drawback: the smaller your user population, the less the AI can learn. So a really small company (eg. 20 users) won't benefit that much from the AI part. But still again, dmarc setup, remedation, etc : great.
  • dmarc setup made ease
  • set and forget security
  • Less administration time to check suspicious logins
  • AI works very well. No false positives
  • It is an addon. It improves your security but will not stop all threats
barracuda is real easy to implement and i haven't had any false positive mail till date.

It is active on my mailboxes. So all office workers are involved.

But to be honest, it is set and forget.
  • it is an extra security on the mailboxes
  • we get alerted on suspicious activity
  • our mailsetup is correctly implemented (spf, dkim, dmarc)
  • the suspicious rule creation stopped an attack quite early.
  • monitoring of the "shadow" it: who sends legit mail
it helps, does its job. why change?
No
  • Cloud Solutions
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
one option, we already used the antispam and archiving. Upgrading to a license that included sentinel was a quite logic step.
at the implementation, we compared point solutions. now we have a barracuda package, so we would need to compare a product suite capable of doing a lot.
  • Implemented in-house
Yes
We first implemented the sentinel agent that scans mailboxes and removes phising mails.
Later we did the correct setup for Dmarc (and spf, dkim due to information in the documentation of sentinel)
Change management was minimal
  • we saw that our dkim was incorrectly set.
It is really just follow the setup documentation. no risk, no troubles.
  • No Training
Since there is no interaction with the users, training was not needed.
there is not really a configuration you can make. But it is not needed.
i found it somewhat difficult to see why some mailsources are failing dmarc. I can see the domains and ip's that send mail, but it would help to actually see the mail (or at least the header of the mail)
No - there is no facility to customize the interface
No - the product does not support adding custom code
no.
Documentation is good and covers more than the product uses (eg. how dkim works) To be honest, the product is that simple you don't really need support. And it just keeps on working. Maybe it is too simple, so a way to tune it more would be great. But for now :follow the documentation and you're set. Set and forget. it just works.
It is a subscription model, so support is included
Yes
I was more like a feature request. I had rules that kept on giving alerts. The answer was that AI (or Machine Learning) needs some time to figure out what is a correct alarm and what is a false alarm. And indeed, it learn after some time.
Specifically for Sentinel, no. But the archiver saved us multiple times, especially with deleted accounts where after 6 months, an important mail was needed.
It only lost some points because it fails when your user population is too small. I had it activated on 1 tenant of 25 mailboxes and besides the login and mailrule checks, the AI to stop junk mail fails. In my larger tenant of 180 mailboxes, it works like a charm.
the domain fraud section works perfect. The link towards forensics and remediation is really good.
  • setup is quite easy and straightforward
  • dmarc setup really helps
  • you have to trust the system.
It is 1 setting for your environment. so flexibility is low (but not necessary). I have not yet noticed any delays due to sentinel
until now, i haven't encountered any problem.
no delays seen.
  • barracuda essentials
  • barracuda incident response
  • office 365
documentation is perfect.
  • ticket system
alerts in sentinel should become an IT ticket in our helpdesk system. I saw that mail is possible, so that should be easy.
  • Single Signon
The integration was there by default.
the needed integrations are there by default (identity and office365)
i'm a member of barracuda insiders, so i have lot of channels to work with the vendor.
similar.
Since we already had a product, the license came as an upgrade.
price/offering is good compared to the market.
  • as a cloud service, upgrades are seamless
  • they add more intelligence in their offerings.

We utilize the Barracuda Sentinel product to block malicious emails including spear-phishing and account takeovers or spoofing. I get a large number of emails that are quarantined that the system is catching where the sender is not a valid account.
  • Capturing targeted phishing attacks
  • Capturing spoofed addresses - emails purporting to be from the CEO but using a Gmail account.
  • This application is doing exactly what I need. It is intuitive and provides details when needed.
We have reduced the number of malicious emails that are being delivered to our end users by a significant amount. There are multiple layers of protection being provided and each layer manages to filter out a few more risks.
  • The capture of malicious email
  • Alerting us of potential email account take over
  • Capturing spoofed email specifically those purporting to need a financial transaction
  • Reducing the risk of a user inadvertently responding to a malicious email
We have been a long-standing customer of Barracuda Backups Cloud to Cloud and Main Backups so this was a logical extension of what we had already been doing and the positive results we had been receiving on the other products

Barracuda Sentinel Review

For my company, we mainly use Barracuda Sentinel for the Account Takeover functionality. It provides easy and readable access to suspicious inbox rules. We have also used the sign-in locations map heavily, to track and readily see where our users are trying to sign in from. While our email platform does provide this to us as well, Barracuda Sentinel easy to navigate interface makes it a better choice for us to use.
  • Account Takeover Reporting
  • Dashboard reports are great for management
  • Very easy to read inbox rule report
  • I have not found the Domain Fraud to be very helpful
As I said before Barracuda Sentinel, for us, has been very helpful with its Account Takeover module. It has allowed us to quickly identify a problem user or region and act on it accordingly. Its Domain Fraud module is less than stellar. We have barely used it. That said, I should look into it more.
  • If we can block one person from taking over an account then it is worth the price. It did.
  • The dashboard graphs have been great for management
Support from Barracuda, in all departments, has been exceptional. They are quick to respond, they are attentive and they have been courteous. I have nothing but the best things to say about their staff. My only issue is that their ticketing system needs to better identify a cloud user versus a physical hardware user.
While I, and my team, are very happy with Barracuda Sentinel, there are feature sets we found that are not as useful. Overall, it has made my company far more secure.

Barracuda Sentinel is being used to root out all forms of phishing emails in [Microsoft] Exchange for our entire organization. It also can determine if a [Microsoft] Exchange account has possibly been taken over by an outside entity. There is also domain fraud protection.
  • Alerts us to account takeovers against users
  • Alerts us to suspicious/phishing emails and allows us to review the incident
  • Alerts us to domain fraud
  • Reporting could use more filters or options
Barracuda Sentinel is very well suited to identify possible phishing/scam/account takeover type emails. I believe it is best to be monitored by someone in the IT department or [Microsoft] Exchange administrator. The admin can review and flag items as false positives. The Sentinel settings also allows you to send or not send an email report to the end user to notify them of the possible email attack. It also allows you determine how the suspicious email should be handled, by allowing you to specify if you want it to be placed in the 'Junk' mailbox, permanently delete the email from the recipient's account, or leave it in the 'Inbox'.
  • Within our first month of use, Sentinel detected and stopped an account takeover
  • We've had numerous phishing emails detected and removed
I've not yet had the need to contact Barracuda for support of Sentinel. The product is very easy to use and needs no real setup. However, knowing how Barracuda support works in other areas of their products, I'm sure any Sentinel support would be expertly handled.
Extremely easy to use. You can easily review and decide how to handle phishing email attacks.

Sentinel is being used across our enterprise. It is addressing the major problem we were having with phishing and spear-phishing. We were receiving approx. 20-30 attack emails per day and were being overwhelmed. Microsoft email filtering was not getting it done no matter how aggressively and quickly we created new rules
  • Phishing prevention; Sentinel has reduced our instances of phishing by some absurd number. Previously we were no only "underwater" when it came to phishing, we were drowning in it. This product reduced that number by upwards of 95%+.
  • spear-phishing prevention; see above.
  • User detection; using the free trial, Sentinel examined our network for the better part of 24-48 hours over our O365 instance, not our network. The product was able to a 100% rate identify all of the critical users in our firm AND show the number of hits they recently endured.
  • The free trial not only identified critical users (people who had signature authority, spending authority, etc.) but it also started intercepting phishing attempts. When I went to sell this to my boss, I had a stack of over 60 attempts over two weeks to show her proof that the product worked.
  • The product is pretty solid so I am not sure how it can be improved. One thing I noticed recently, I am not getting the emails back from Sentinel when I send in a "miss". Used to be I got an email back saying "sorry we missed this, we are improving." That does happen anymore, so I am assuming that when I send a miss, the AI is getting better.
  • I would expand this to cover all kinds of email fraud like ransomware and spam rather than creating another product.
I am not sure how I can put this any more clearly, until we deployed this product we were swamped by phishing and spear-phishing attacks. After testing the free version, I had all the info I needed to sell this to my boss; the product ID'd users and it started blocking attempts. I walked in with a stack of 60+ blocks and told my boss, "we need this." She agreed to pay for it and overnight our phishing and spear-phishing attempts dropped by 75%+. From where we were, to where we are now, with the AI learning our users and our environment, these attempts have dropped by 90-95%+. An amazing product.
  • All positive, prior to deploying Sentinel we had at least 3 times when users bit on phishing attacks and bought $500 in iTunes gift cards as requested by the phisher. Our HR Director was also ready to send another phisher all the company W2's as requested. Since deployment, we sleep a little better at night.
  • It's really hard to put a value on this product. It has been worth every penny by reducing our Spear Phishing and Phishing attacks by upwards of 90-95%+. How do you put a figure on that? In two months of testing, it intercepted 240+ Phishing and Spear phishing attempts. How do you attach a monetary figure to a situation where you are able to not have to deal with a problem and work on something else? 15 minutes per attempt? Times 60 in 60-days? $45/hour for an engineer? The ROI has been well worth it.
My firm has a Barracuda Back-up 490 and a Barracuda Web Filter. In a previous life, the firm I worked for, were Barracuda resellers, I know the quality of the products from the sales side, the training side, the support side, and the user side. We were posed with Barracuda vs. Mimecast. In the end, Barracuda won because of the reputation of the product, the company, and its people. Another big piece of the choice was the ability to "test drive" the product, testing gave me concrete data with which to the sell the product to my management. We are looking to expand this footprint to one of our sister companies now. Wasn't even a competition really. The other thing in retrospect? The installation was seamless and took no time. All we had to do was develop a 1-pager to send to staff warning them of the change, the emails they might see, and how to self administer the client.

Everything, executive management, client facing and back office.

We rarely have to touch it. I could put an entry level system admin. in charge of this.
  • Stops Phising
  • Stops Spear Phishing
  • Easy to use
  • Reliable
  • We have not gone too far off the stated purpose, would love to know about what else we could do with the product. We are a 2-man shop, and there isn't a lot of time to consider alternatives uses.
  • Not sure, I would love to understand how other organizations are using the product differently that I currently am using Sentinel.
We've had the product for 2-years now, I am not going back to where I was when I wasn't using this.
Yes
Yes, if you consider Microsoft O365 email security a solution.
  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Product Reputation
Nope. We made a perfect decision the other product we evaluated did not look like it was easy to use and maintain (Mimecast).
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was a minor issue with the implementation
Not much, my IT Team is pretty good with Change Management. We just supplied a one-page "How to..." to the staff an explained to them "in depth" what was going on.
  • Getting users who didn't pay attention to our change management efforts to understand what the end result would be.
It was "stupid easy" from the technical side.
Because everything is so easy with Barracuda. You call, you provide your information, a ticket is created, and you are immediately transferred to a support engineer. The staff are professional and friendly...and here is the key. They follow up with you to make sure the solution not only fit the problem, but solved the issue.
Yes
We buy it with out subscriptions.
No
During the set-up of the test. I think I was talking with the lead person of the Sentinel team, I think I figured that out about 1/2 way through the call. But as I was setting up the trial run or the test run, he was very patient and knowledgeable and walked me through everything. Once the scan was done, the results poured in exactly as I was told. 60-days later I was in front of my boss asking to buy this for my enterprise. Every time we call and it's not often, we are greeted with knowledgeable, polite and professional people who help us right away and then check-up later to make sure everything is going well post-call.
Because we tested Sentinel before we bought it. This was key and a major selling point for us.
  • Releasing non-Phishing emails
  • Reporting missed Phishing emails
  • Beyond the basic functionality I am unaware of other features that I could be using. A user group or directed emails "Hey, did you know?"
Yes, but I don't use it
