What is Basecamp?

Basecamp is a web-based project-management tool developed by 37signals in Chicago and launched in 2004. The Ruby on Rails framework was extracted from the Basecamp project.

Basecamp offers features standard to project management platforms, including to-do lists, wiki-style web-based text documents, milestone management, file sharing, time tracking and a calendar, and a messaging system. Mobile accessibility is supported. Notably, it supports unlimited users. It also offers integration with 37signals' own Campfire product, which expands the group messaging functionality of the core platform. Customization, accessibility, and functionality are extended further by the broad range of apps available for free from 3rd parties. A 2-month free trial is available. Pricing is dependent upon space requirements and the number of concurrent projects, not the number of users.

Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Basecamp:

  1. Learn and Utilize Basecamp's Features: Users recommend taking the time to learn about all of Basecamp's features and functions. They suggest getting training or working with someone experienced in Basecamp to fully utilize the platform. This recommendation helps users make the most out of their Basecamp experience.

  2. Set Up a Standardized System: Many users suggest setting up a system or process that everyone can follow when using Basecamp. This recommendation helps to ensure consistency and streamline project management within teams.

  3. Consider Other Tools for Advanced Functionalities: While users find Basecamp handy for organizing projects, offering instructions and feedback, some reviewers suggest using a more advanced tool, like Monday.com, for large teams collaborating on projects. They advise evaluating additional functionalities and comparing prices before deciding on Basecamp.

Overall, users recommend considering Basecamp as a low-cost option for small teams with straightforward projects. It is recommended for organizing projects, managing workflows, facilitating team cooperation, linking departments, coordinating tasks, and storing data. However, users caution against using it for purposes other than its intended use and highlight that compared to more advanced tools, it might seem basic and limited in benefits. It is also suggested to stay updated with appropriate titles and efficiently organize projects while using Basecamp. Additionally, Google Drive is recommended for file management purposes.

As one of two administrators, I use Basecamp to support professional, personal and volunteer projects. The range of projects that I've used Basecamp for are: - Multiple book writing projects; - Research projects; - Volunteer organization development projects and - Side gig/income stream development projects.
  • Task management
  • Collaboration with colleagues
  • Discussion of relevant issues
  • Cloud storage of data/files
  • Kanban board
  • To-do lists and reminders
My colleague and I knew we needed an online platform for collaboration on various projects. We initially tried Slack but found it very command-line oriented (at that time, 2016). We tried Basecamp and very much liked it (we're both 'users who know enough to be dangerous'), and we continue to use it for a wide range of professional and personal projects.

Basecamp is a project management software we used for a short time to help collaborations and organizing projects. In my experience, the software was hard to use, not intuitive, was hard to use and confusing for clients, and what finally did it for me was the lack of notifications. It literally did not notify me, teammates, or the client multiple occasions. Finally I said enough - I said this software is costing me clients and money far beyond its value, and stressing all parties out just by using it. I do NOT recommend Basecamp.
  • Charge too much
  • Fail to notify parties of new communications
  • Confuse customers
In my opinion, Basecamp is not suited for a high-output marketing or development team, or anyone who has to collaborate with a client directly through their proj management software. I cannot think of a situation where Basecamp is well suited except as a free software for individiual task tracking, literally nothing more in my opinion.

I've enjoyed using Basecamp a lot. I've worked on a lot of projects with this software, and it's proven crucial for project management. Real-time communication has been remarkably effective. It was exceptional because of the app integration. I can automate my Basecamp tasks utilizing well-known integration services that are compatible with Basecamp.
  • Communication
  • Project Management.
  • Task management.
  • Check Ins.
It has been commendable when managing projects; in our case, we have various projects where we can easily manage all of them in very low pricing models; on the other hand, if we use some other software, it would be costly, and the user interface would be quite difficult to manage.

We use Basecamp as a project management tool. Although it does it's job, the layout isn't very intuitive and it's a bit confusing how the projects are managed. Other project management tools seem to organize projects in a layout that makes more sense. It is a nice feature that Basecamp has a generic chat function built in, that doesn't need to be tied to a specific project, however, these days it seems most organizations use Slack for their internal communications.
  • Project Management
  • Task Assignment
Basecamp is a basic project management tool. It doesn't have anything too complex and for that reason might be a good fit for an organization looking for something simple with a low learning curve. Personally I think there are better project management softwares out there that include task dependencies and statuses.

Our design and development company uses Basecamp as our primary project management system and single source of truth for all our projects. It enables our remote distributed team to collaborate on projects and communicate with our clients. Our company relies on it for our daily to do lists, sharing updates with the team, and monitoring project status and progress.
  • Ease of use - friendly enough for less tech-savvy clients
  • Control of user permissions - we can manage which data the client has access to and which is internal facing, as well as assign different team members access to different projects
  • Auto updates and notifications - each user controls how and when they receive various types of updates, and auto-checkins keep everyone up to date
  • Simplified task management ensures that the process stays streamlined
Basecamp is a wonderful tool for teams of varying degrees of technical knowledge, teams managing lots of different types of "agifall" and waterfall projects, and teams that are remotely distributed. It's probably less useful for more strictly agile-focused development teams, compared to other more flexible software applications like Jira and Asana.

Though we used to use basecamp for client communications, at this point our basecamp usage is limited to just being a simple QA tool. We use it to map out web functionality and modules we'll need for a build, and then as development finishes up, we'll use basecamp to log QA issues that we find throughout the development.
  • Organized projects.
  • Simple, snappy interface.
  • Supports video and images within tasks.
Basecamp works really well for us and our QA process at this point - granted we are not using Basecamp to the extent of its abilities. It doesn't work as well when it comes to logging all client communications and back and forths with clients, things tend to get lost, at least that was our experience.

Basecamp is used as a central hub for project management, task routing and a general Kanban board type production schedule. We utilize Basecamp for document storage and archiving as well as group coordination and conversation thread management. We have specialized, dedicated threads stored for onboarding, process controls, and process improvement that all new employees review and adjust during their onboarding phase. This solves many business problems for us at once.
  • Document storage
  • Task management
  • Message boards
Basecamp is perfectly suited for project teams in a flat organization. Customizing ad hoc teams and leveraging resources and providing a common workspace with all the tools you need in one central location. You can store documents, chat with teammates, develop a project schedule, and track tasks assigned across team members.

We used Basecamp as the project management software of choice from a vendor tasked with the migration/development of our new website. All communication was to be funneled through the app along with any files and assets needed. To my knowledge, no one else on campus is using it. We were using it as a PM tool with a third-party vendor.
  • Easy to get started
  • easy to add/onboard team members
  • web/mobile access
It may be fit for light usage in a team environment but we had a horrible time trying to make sense of the app with 15-20 people attempting to collaborate in different countries and time zones.

We used Basecamp to coordinate remote workers and contractors on shared projects and to establish workflows to coordinate those projects. Basecamp offers lots of flexibility, but there's little you can to do benefit from economies of scale in executing similar projects over and over again and that represents 95% of the projects our organization does. Each project becomes a silo, and when you care about 10 simultaneous, similar projects, BaseCamp is less than ideal.
  • Basecamp is easy to get started using.
  • Basecamp has a friendly interface.
  • Basecamp allows for community and communication.
Basecamp is best if every project you have is unique. The more "repeatable" your projects are, the more time you'll spend recreating nearly the same things over and over for each project, and that's a major consumer of time that could be spent executing the project or doing the actual work.

We have several platforms in-house for project management. When I arrived, we moved ahead with [Basecamp] to manage our project load for the IT department projects. Creating a standard for the IT department will allow our organization to expand its usage across multiple business units in the future.
  • Quick Updates
  • Creating Project Timelines with Notifcations
  • Cost
  • Mobile
  • Visibility
Small to mid-size would be a great fit [for Basecamp]. It's simple to use and does not require a ton of ramp-up. Unlike other platforms that require you to learn their terminology in order to use the platform this works well for the non technical user whom just needs to put in simple task updates[.]

We use Basecamp to manage tasks, communication and documents with our clients. Instead of just using email (where things would be easily lost), we create a project for each client to keep projects on track and to have a centralized location where everything related to the project lives. This makes it much easier to find things or reference past communication without having to waste time sifting through past emails.
  • Task management - It is very easy to add, organize and discuss tasks within Basecamp's interface.
  • The "Campfire" function is great for communicating when you just have a quick question for someone on the team.
  • Notifications - Basecamp lets you decide how often and about what you'd like to be notified. The ability to respond to messages in Basecamp directly via email saves a lot of time.
Basecamp is extremely easy to use. We use it to manage communication and tasks with our clients and the training need for new clients is very minimal. It is also very flexible in terms of workflows, so no matter what your team's workflow is, you could configure the tool in a way to accommodate your processes. I think Basecamp is slightly less appropriate for teams who like to add an extreme level of detail through subtasks.

We use [Basecamp] as a small team to track our team's coverage on different ticketed issues that arise. This way, we can determine team member bandwidth, figure out the status of different tickets, and provide robust reporting so executives can get a snapshot of the work in progress. As far as I know, it's not used beyond our team.
  • Recognizable brand allows for immediate software acceptance
  • Pretty solid APIs to pull in data from other platforms
  • Lightweight software that can be accessed from anywhere
It depends how quickly you need to set up a solution. We needed to set up a solution suitable for reporting ASAP if not sooner. We're small to mid-size team within a large corporation, so it works well for our purposes. However, if you needed it to support a larger enterprise effort, I wouldn't recommend it.

We wanted to use Basecamp primarily as a singular hub for all of our remote work. We mainly use it as a project and task tracker, idea board, document dump, and chat. It helped us transition smoothly to remote work as we are able to coordinate ideas, tasks, and documents in one place across various departments with varying levels of tech savviness.
  • Ease of use
  • Simple and clear layout
  • One tool for almost everything
Basecamp is well suited for teams where projects are not very complicated - single-level, minimal to no dependencies. If your team’s projects can be managed with just a checklist, it can work. For more complicated multi phase, multi dependency projects, the limitations of Basecamp show. I would also not recommend it for chat as it is clunky and slow. Basically, Basecamp is a good virtual office, but not a project management software nor chat.

Basecamp is used across the whole [organization] to coordinate staff and volunteer teams at various levels. It helps to foster communication between teams, especially when it is difficult for all of the members to be in the same place at the same time. It is helpful for keeping records of meetings and work that has been done, as well as setting up reminders for tasks and recurring events.
  • Easy to organize teams and projects
  • The project templates are helpful if you have yearly events, etc
  • Customizable notifications settings are great
Basecamp is a really great tool for online collaboration. It was a real lifesaver for planning and executing projects during the pandemic since our staff and volunteer teams could not gather in person very much. The multiple levels of communication and organization help to keep things organized, and if well-used, can help simplify and streamline work so that you're not spending so much time tracking down emails or documents. It can be really helpful for keeping track of everything that's going on in your organization. It does require some setup and management to keep it from getting overwhelming [...] and may require some orientation for new users.

We use Basecamp to communicate with our offshore development team for our digital learning platform. It is only used by our digital learning team to communicate with this specific vendor. No other department or team in our organization uses it. We use it to discuss new features for the platform in depth, in order to keep the user stories on our development tracking platform cleaner and less cluttered. It is a great way to keep in touch with the dev team on more complicated features that will span multiple sprints, and to work out strategies for how to build and deliver those features.
  • Provides a consolidated feed of recent activity (messages posted, discussion threads, sprint planning and recap posts, etc.).
  • Provides email updates on what has been happening on the board, with the option to not email you during non-work hours.
  • Allows for both synchronous and asynchronous discussions, which is great for working with offshore teams.
Basecamp is great for having in-depth discussions about product feature development with virtual & global teams. It is not a one-stop-shop for development tasks, though. You still need a separate system (like YouTrack, which is what we use) for writing, prioritizing, and scheduling user stories into sprints, and tracking their QA progress through the various development environments. It is more of a supplemental product development tool than a main development tool.

My team used Basecamp as a task management tool to track our projects and progress. It was also used to communicate with an external vendor and keep all of our collaboration in one place. With each thread, we can pick and choose who to include and attach documents and links as needed.
  • Basecamp has a user friendly interface that's quite straightforward and intuitive
  • Basecamp allows organization by "projects" and "discussions" so everything is easy to find if you label things
  • Basecamp sends an email for every new post or reply so that you get notified for updates in the platform
I would highly recommend Basecamp for most colleagues, and I would say that it's a great project management and collaboration tool that will keep everyone internal and external of an organization on task. Basecamp, however, is not great for a back-and-forth discussion because that would create too many emails and details will get lost in the process. A conference call or instant messages might be better suited for that, but in terms of bigger-picture project discussion, progress, and updates, Basecamp is fantastic.

Basecamp was implemented as a project management software to improve coordination, accountability, and file exchange between events, brand/communications, and fundraising teams. Individuals and distinct teams also were encouraged to explore Basecamp as a to-do/personal project management software to keep track of deadlines and workflows. This was the first attempt at an org-wide project management software.
  • To-Do lists
  • Collaboration
  • Accountability
  • Privacy controls
  • Mobile app/desktop app syncing
  • Cost
Like any project management software, it is only useful if it is used. Teams that struggle with organization and accountability will benefit from having one place to store everybody's to-do lists, organized either by person, by area of responsibility, or by workflow channel, as well as links to critical documents. The ability to participate in-app but also manage replies and communication via email is very useful to folks who struggle with adopting new technology. Projects that have a lot of relational decisions/deadlines (once this is completed, do this) might struggle.

Basecamp is our core platform for the management of all projects across the business division. It is used by all my delivery teams as well as my clients who are users in multiple departments within the organisation. We also provide access to users from external organisations that are a blend of subcontractors working for us and collaboration clients from other businesses.

The primary role for Basecamp is our unified platform for tracking and progressing work across all our delivery programmes. We wanted to centralise this in a single toolset to ensure all stakeholders have full and clear visibility on all communications, progress and plans. A key driver for this choice of platform is to do away with multiple services that result in disjointed flow, such as email, document repositories and desktop documentation tools.
  • Ease of use meaning that non-technical users can be onboarded with minimal training required
  • Range of features meaning that you can use Basecamp as your core project management platform and don't need to rely on other tools in conjunction
  • Good collaborative features to encourage adoption and management of end-to-end process on Basecamp
Basecamp is very well-suited for organisations that need an end-to-end solution to manage simpler projects that do not comprise complex work breakdown structures. If you need a platform to help manage such engagements then Basecamp is ideal for you.

If you're looking for a solution for very complex practice management then you may find challenges with Basecamp (it doesn't support a full agile/scrum model, for example). However if you want a platform that can be provisioned within minutes and can be deployed across an organisation at speed then Basecamp is definitely the answer!

I use Basecamp as a project organization system that is used by myself and some other coworkers. We use it to create and assign tasks, input descriptions and due dates, attach files, etc. We can keep up with the status of the tasks together, get email notifications about when the tasks are updated or come due, etc. They are grouped into different projects for each client so we can keep things organized, but we each have our own personal dashboard that shows tasks that are due soon across all projects. It is used across the whole company as well as some external contractors so we can coordinate marketing efforts, development efforts, design efforts, etc. If we didn't use Basecamp, we would not be as organized and accountable for the projects and tasks we're working on.
  • The interface is beautiful and intuitive
  • It is very easy to see what tasks you need to work on
  • Coordination between other users is simple and effective
Basecamp is a great project management system overall, and it is reasonably priced. If you work on multiple projects and want to have to-dos for yourself, tasks you work on with other coworkers, and want a dashboard that you'll come back to every day/week to check on the status of everything, it will get the job done.

I use Basecamp to connect with donors, members, and others especially leading up to a meeting or event. A couple of us use this in our department. It allows us to easily communicate updates for events, meetings and to market our events easily to groups. We are able to quickly share information and have a discussion about our upcoming meetings. It is a great way to create buzz about focus groups and other donor and member opportunities.
  • Unlimited users and projects. It's great for multiple purposes and it allows you to receive a free two month trial without providing a credit card and it gives you access to every tool and feature unlike many other softwares.
  • User friendly. It's a simple design and you don't need to worry about losing information as it auto saves everything. You are able to retrieve any deleted files for about a month. The mobile apps are great and Basecamp allows you to make a to do list.
  • Customer support is efficient even though they don't provide the level of support other software does, they are quick to respond to emails and questions.
  • It's great at allowing you to have a detailed discussion with a group, advertise an upcoming event and easily provide updates. They send email communications when there is an update in a group you are in however you could filter and opt out of this feature.
It's great for basic communication and data sharing needs with a group for meetings and events. On your home screen you are easily able to view your projects and teams you are a part of. It isn't great for more advanced needs such as a calendar, customization and other advanced features.

It has helped me a lot to keep in better communication with the clients and employees of the company, thus improving the relationship within the workplace. I have been able to obtain better results in the management of a project, thus being able to specify each objective correctly, completely, and without any setback. It has kept us really up to date, organized and synchronized with projects and team communication, and at the same time with the client. It has been possible to have a pleasant and comfortable experience with this platform, and it has not taken much effort to learn how its tools are used.
  • The interface has been very useful since it is intuitive and easy to configure since this platform is based on simplicity.
  • No professional recruitment is needed to be able to operate within the platform.
  • It is very simple to be able to create and assign tasks to users, in addition to being very simple to be able to follow up on it.
  • The ability to manage users is incredible and you can also include clients in projects that are carried out.
I recommend it for its simplicity and how easy it is to use without the need to resort to experts to explain its use. Also, if they are projects that are very short or easy to carry out, then Basecamp is the ideal for those cases without exception.

We used Basecamp to be part of a joint promotion on Facebook - It was a giveaway where 12 various businesses needed to access and share info. it was a great 'all in one' place to keep things organised and to see at a glance what was completed and what still needed to be done.
  • Easy to see what actions had been completed and what was outstanding.
  • Quick way to get a message to multiple users.
We loved the way we could all share our information for the joint promotion and it was really clear of actions and what was still needed to be completed at a glance The joint message thing was sometimes a pain - I would rather just see everyone else's info on the portal but they had the option to share with all which sometimes was not needed.

We have a Ceridian Dayforce user group that is being administered via Basecamp. I am a part of the group and it is only being used to facilitate communication with the group members. Basecamp is a good tool that integrates information from all questions initiated. It is a good repository of past information.
  • Easy to add new users and access user information.
  • Easy to integrate with email.
  • Data is organized well in Basecamp, by new discussions, calendar, projects etc.
It is a good tool that integrates information from multiple users. It is great to connect with other users. I can review discussions by date if I have been away for a long time. It is easy to view and add comments in response to other questions.

If a question or response is unsuitable for the group, it can be dismissed.

Many consider Basecamp to be a project management tool. In my opinion, it should not be used for project management.
