What is Basecamp?

Basecamp is a web-based project-management tool developed by 37signals in Chicago and launched in 2004. The Ruby on Rails framework was extracted from the Basecamp project.

Basecamp offers features standard to project management platforms, including to-do lists, wiki-style web-based text documents, milestone management, file sharing, time tracking and a calendar, and a messaging system. Mobile accessibility is supported. Notably, it supports unlimited users. It also offers integration with 37signals' own Campfire product, which expands the group messaging functionality of the core platform. Customization, accessibility, and functionality are extended further by the broad range of apps available for free from 3rd parties. A 2-month free trial is available. Pricing is dependent upon space requirements and the number of concurrent projects, not the number of users.

Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Basecamp:

  1. Learn and Utilize Basecamp's Features: Users recommend taking the time to learn about all of Basecamp's features and functions. They suggest getting training or working with someone experienced in Basecamp to fully utilize the platform. This recommendation helps users make the most out of their Basecamp experience.

  2. Set Up a Standardized System: Many users suggest setting up a system or process that everyone can follow when using Basecamp. This recommendation helps to ensure consistency and streamline project management within teams.

  3. Consider Other Tools for Advanced Functionalities: While users find Basecamp handy for organizing projects, offering instructions and feedback, some reviewers suggest using a more advanced tool, like Monday.com, for large teams collaborating on projects. They advise evaluating additional functionalities and comparing prices before deciding on Basecamp.

Overall, users recommend considering Basecamp as a low-cost option for small teams with straightforward projects. It is recommended for organizing projects, managing workflows, facilitating team cooperation, linking departments, coordinating tasks, and storing data. However, users caution against using it for purposes other than its intended use and highlight that compared to more advanced tools, it might seem basic and limited in benefits. It is also suggested to stay updated with appropriate titles and efficiently organize projects while using Basecamp. Additionally, Google Drive is recommended for file management purposes.

Basecamp helps keep projects on track and organized so you are agile and can respond quickly, which is essential in public relations. Basecamp allows visibility company-wide so it is easy to see where projects are in the process and where files are located. You are also able to share items with clients so you are not duplicating work. You can set up auto-reminders to make sure you aren't missing a weekly activity and it alerts you when a comment is made in a project you are invested in.
  • Organization
  • Alerts
  • Collaboration
  • Project visibility
  • Showing timelines visually which would allow you to see if a project is on track
  • I would love to be able to have projects under teams
  • It would be great to be able to have a card from an external team in the deck from an internal team instead of having to log into both separately
Basecamp is excellent for making to-do lists and including all team members involved to drive a specific activity.

Our design and development company uses Basecamp as our primary project management system and single source of truth for all our projects. It enables our remote distributed team to collaborate on projects and communicate with our clients. Our company relies on it for our daily to do lists, sharing updates with the team, and monitoring project status and progress.
  • Ease of use - friendly enough for less tech-savvy clients
  • Control of user permissions - we can manage which data the client has access to and which is internal facing, as well as assign different team members access to different projects
  • Auto updates and notifications - each user controls how and when they receive various types of updates, and auto-checkins keep everyone up to date
  • Simplified task management ensures that the process stays streamlined
  • While creating sub-groups within lists is helpful, it would be nice to have a better way to tag tasks with attributes, like priority level
  • Rigid structure is nice for simplification, but for some projects more flexibility is needed
  • No Gantt-type view or way to create dependencies or relationships between tasks and deadlines
Basecamp is a wonderful tool for teams of varying degrees of technical knowledge, teams managing lots of different types of "agifall" and waterfall projects, and teams that are remotely distributed. It's probably less useful for more strictly agile-focused development teams, compared to other more flexible software applications like Jira and Asana.

Basecamp is our core platform for the management of all projects across the business division. It is used by all my delivery teams as well as my clients who are users in multiple departments within the organisation. We also provide access to users from external organisations that are a blend of subcontractors working for us and collaboration clients from other businesses.

The primary role for Basecamp is our unified platform for tracking and progressing work across all our delivery programmes. We wanted to centralise this in a single toolset to ensure all stakeholders have full and clear visibility on all communications, progress and plans. A key driver for this choice of platform is to do away with multiple services that result in disjointed flow, such as email, document repositories and desktop documentation tools.
  • Ease of use meaning that non-technical users can be onboarded with minimal training required
  • Range of features meaning that you can use Basecamp as your core project management platform and don't need to rely on other tools in conjunction
  • Good collaborative features to encourage adoption and management of end-to-end process on Basecamp
  • Ability to create project & task list templates to speed up new project/task creation
  • Reporting is limited; some export facilities to track task progression would help
  • The ability to create recurring tasks
Basecamp is very well-suited for organisations that need an end-to-end solution to manage simpler projects that do not comprise complex work breakdown structures. If you need a platform to help manage such engagements then Basecamp is ideal for you.

If you're looking for a solution for very complex practice management then you may find challenges with Basecamp (it doesn't support a full agile/scrum model, for example). However if you want a platform that can be provisioned within minutes and can be deployed across an organisation at speed then Basecamp is definitely the answer!

Basecamp is used by a very small portion of our team. This project management tool is the application of choice for our mobile developer team who work remotely. It helps us communicate with them in a space that they are used to, thus streamlining how we manage tasks, bugs and projects with them.
  • Very simple interface anyone can use
  • Inexpensive if you have a huge team or want to use it for multiple clients
  • An amazing founding company story and vision
  • Can't do the advanced things you can in other project management tools
  • Not the best at forecasting or measuring how many resources your teams have
  • Not as strong if you use it for everything (e.g., file storage and messaging)
Basecamp is a simple project management tool that has the potential to replace other tools you're currently using. Whenever it comes to apps like this you need to think what your team requirements are and how complicated you want your project management to be. If you need simple to-do lists and there's not a lot of volume in terms of users, projects and tasks, Basecamp could be the right tool for you.

In my role, I need to plan much more in advance and seeing the work unfold visually is the most important factor for me, so I wouldn't rate Basecamp as highly.

We use Basecamp across our whole organization, but it is key for our Development team. We manage over 20 individual apps: Windows, Web, Mobile. We run separate Basecamps for each application to track individual development tasks through ideation, coding, testing, debugging and release. We have used other apps in the past and looked at competitors, but the simplicity and unique approach provided by the Basecamp team suits our needs best in our agile workflow.
  • No nonsense pricing. I don't have to worry about adding seats or projects and paying more.
  • Simple to use and customizable for each project.
  • Keeps my inbox clean because I can track all our workflow without email and constant chat messages.
  • Some of our tasks lists are big, and the drag and drop reordering is a little glitchy sometimes.
  • Most tools can be turned off if not needed, but I wish I could disable the Pings function also.
If you need to manage tasks for a team of any size, I would highly recommend Basecamp. Read their blogs about how they run their company and you will find some very interesting ideas as well.

Basecamp is an all round project management tool that includes project management, chat functions and team collaboration tools. I use Basecamp primarily to manage remote teams for content marketing clients, though it has many other use cases. My teams collaborate on web projects and content for various clients and can easily check in and update tasks and assignments that are assigned to them.
  • Basecamp is a good team collaboration tool for managing media content and projects. You can share edits and comments on projects from within Basecamp and work with other team members and see what tasks they are working on. You can also share tasks and calendars all within the tool.
  • Basecamps' check in feature is very valuable and interactive. If you run a team, you can get a daily summary of the tasks or activities your team members were up to. This can be automated and sent at a specific time. It is a great way to see what everyone has been working on.
  • Basecamp's all in one suite one price is genius. Paying one price to get chat, storage, calendar, document editing and project management all for one price is a winner in my books.
  • Basecamps' ability to integrate and work with other apps and tools is another valuable feature. This makes it a great hub for project management if say, you use another tool for communication, you can link it to your Basecamp and have full integration both ways in some instances.
  • Basecamp does project management well, with reports and a feature called Hill Charts, you have a bird's-eye view on whether your projects are moving along well. This information is helpful to project managers and team members especially if you work on projects that have tight deadlines.
  • While Basecamps' all in one integration is great, some features feel a bit redundant. For example, in storage, you can find that you download a different version of a document, since it archives all versions of the same. In this case, using Google drive or dropbox would be best to give you the latest version of a document.
  • Basecamp has a bit of a learning curve so you need your team to be vested into its features otherwise you may not get all your monies worth.
  • While the all in one price is great, it would be good to see another price point option for say teams that are smaller and want to pay $50 or have some features removed. It is useful to have all the features at your disposal but if you do not use them all, you may feel it is a bit of a waste.
I have found that Basecamp is best suited to teams that work on media related content and share a number of files. This means content management teams, and media producers can find a lot of use for Basecamp. Other people may not have the same results. For example, IT professionals would look at something like JIRA and maybe admin executives may use Trello.

We used basecamp to distribute and follow up on tasks in projects with a technical nature. Basecamp is a great tool to track bigger pieces of work, but less effective on detailed oriented projects since it's easy to get lost with all tasks. What's good with Basecamp is the dynamic web interface and simplicity it offers and how that can be used to involve colleagues with no previous experience and get them on track without further hassle.
  • Easy to use interface with possibility to work cross-functionally in the organization by assigning tasks between departments.
  • Support to carry a whole project portfolio.
  • Offers explicit support for any "less complex" projects with to-do lists.
  • Great support for file sharing across the organization.
  • We found it a bit too narrow for more detailed, complex technical projects.
I would recommend this tool to handle organizational needs to track work and share knowledge. As soon as you start assigning tasks, a few persons in the organization usually gets the motherload and get overwhelmed with work. If you can keep that from happening, you have yourself a really good platform with Basecamp. Use the tool wisely and set up rules around each project to make it work best.

Basecamp is used by the whole organization for Team, project and task management. It is much better than its counterparts and I am so happy with the product. I use it in my Agile Project Development. The product development is a rigorous process and breaking it into projects helps a lot. That's where Basecamp comes handy.
  • Project Management - So much better to handle the projects effectively
  • UI for the application is so good
  • The description in the projects - space is good
  • Basecamp has limited features
  • What I think about the website is that it is not designed well
  • I think there should be tracking on the basis of time also
When you have a low budget, this product takes the cake. Also, with unlimited users for its product gives the advantages over other products. Unlimited Projects also give the advantage. Also, if you work in a fast-paced environment, the speedy Basecamp is the way to go. It has one of the least error rates in the industry.

We used to use it for design projects. All people related to the project, external or internal, were included in the system so everyone knew what was going on with the project. The problem we are solving with Basecamp is the lack of transparency that can exist when executing a project with people who are not sitting all in the same office. The biggest benefit for me is the visibility it gives to the team of everything that has been shared during the execution of a project. You can go back to conversations and documents anytime and there is traceability of everything.
  • What I like the most is that it serves as a repository of everything shared and discussed during a project.
  • Basecamp is a really good tool if you are working on a project with a remote team of three or more people.
  • You can invite external and internal people to a basecamp project.
  • You can assign task to people within the team and keep track of what's been finished or not.
  • What I don't like about Basecamp is that it feels like you are using an old product. All the other productivity tools I use have a slick modern interface. Basecamp just feels outdated in that regard. The user interface hasn't been updated in years and you can really notice it.
If you are working with a team of 3+ Basecamp becomes very useful because it serves as a repository of information for the project. Even if they are all in the same location, it's a virtual place where they can just post everything that's going on with the project, share documents, status updates, manage tasks, etc.

Connect your Basecamp instance with other productivity apps like Slack. Don't forget to invite other people, external people, to the Basecamp project. If they are going to participate in very specific portions of it, you can grant restricted access.

It's being used by 20-25 employees of our organization. When you start to work fully with Basecamp it will help you too much. Because all features and tools are designed like a masterpiece and every single one is located easily to find and you start to work quickly with them. Actually, at first, I did not believe when I saw its price because it's is too cheap for that kind of quality service. It deserves more.
  • Flexible
  • It does not require a long time to learn.
  • It's really good to have all of tools and information on one platform.
  • Friendly customer support
  • It's integrated with Google Drive, But in my view connection with other software would be really great, otherwise I have to use a variety of things for some specific task.
  • I can't complain about design, because it's really perfect, but I can't customize interface for myself.
  • Calendar view is not in good condition, It needs to be updated.
Basecamp is a well-designed application that provides perfect tools and features for unlimited projects and events. Working with Basecamp gives you chance to do your job more easily and with more efficient ways to collaborate with your co-workers. And autosave tool is perfect, like Google Suite it saves everything immediately, so you don't have to save everything. The main problem is there is no any client area. I want this because if we have a section for our clients or customers for a specific project, task or event it would be great to host them there.

We use Bascamp across the different departments in our organization. It's been a great tool to keep the different departments in sync while still allowing segmented conversations.
  • It allows a "not email" place where a team can collaborate on to-do's, file sharing, and conversations. Threads can be archived to keep the conversation moving along.
  • It integrates with email allowing non technical users to simply reply to a Basecamp notification to stay involved.
  • Basecamp integrates with other third party services well. Embedding videos or sharing cloud files is easy and useful.
  • While Basecamp is geared towards conversation, I'd like to see tools for converting conversations into actionable items (i.e. assigning tickets with priority).
Basecamp is great for small or large teams. In order for it to work efficiently, the entire team really needs to buy into it. If one member insists on using only email then it could render Basecamp ineffective. Other organizations will find that while it's perfect for collaboration, a separate service may be necessary to create actionable items. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just means another link in the chain.

  • Keeps large teams on track for project completion.
  • Love that you can schedule recurring projects in advance and assign all the tasks out - turns us into a well-oiled machine.
  • Linking tasks! I would love it if you could move one task and it would ripple to all the following ones.

  • Basecamp is excellent at delivering a lightweight and highly usable system for managing a variety of projects. It is intuitive, stable and optimized for web and email collaboration.
  • It is very easy to include external customers/collaborators and they rarely required training or hand-holding to figure out how to jump in and participate in the project.
  • Multiple connectors are available to integrate third party solutions into your Basecamp experience such as Freshbooks for invoicing.
  • A well documented API allows more sophisticated organizations to write creative integrations.
  • Basecamp's strength is also its weakness. The lack of a clear point of view on how you are "supposed" to use the system can leave project managers who prefer the rigidity of more sophisticated systems frustrated.
  • You may find certain features that you "assume" should be part of a project management tool missing entirely. This is again, reflective of a strong sense that they are giving you only the tools and functionality which *they* consider absolutely necessary.
To understand more about Basecamp, you'll want to understand the company behind it: 37signals. They believe that much of how companies work is broken and try to build software that overcomes those problems.
