Product Details

What is Basecamp?

Basecamp is a web-based project-management tool developed by 37signals in Chicago and launched in 2004. The Ruby on Rails framework was extracted from the Basecamp project.

Basecamp offers features standard to project management platforms, including to-do lists, wiki-style web-based text documents, milestone management, file sharing, time tracking and a calendar, and a messaging system. Mobile accessibility is supported. Notably, it supports unlimited users. It also offers integration with 37signals' own Campfire product, which expands the group messaging functionality of the core platform. Customization, accessibility, and functionality are extended further by the broad range of apps available for free from 3rd parties. A 2-month free trial is available. Pricing is dependent upon space requirements and the number of concurrent projects, not the number of users.

Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Basecamp:

  1. Learn and Utilize Basecamp's Features: Users recommend taking the time to learn about all of Basecamp's features and functions. They suggest getting training or working with someone experienced in Basecamp to fully utilize the platform. This recommendation helps users make the most out of their Basecamp experience.

  2. Set Up a Standardized System: Many users suggest setting up a system or process that everyone can follow when using Basecamp. This recommendation helps to ensure consistency and streamline project management within teams.

  3. Consider Other Tools for Advanced Functionalities: While users find Basecamp handy for organizing projects, offering instructions and feedback, some reviewers suggest using a more advanced tool, like Monday.com, for large teams collaborating on projects. They advise evaluating additional functionalities and comparing prices before deciding on Basecamp.

Overall, users recommend considering Basecamp as a low-cost option for small teams with straightforward projects. It is recommended for organizing projects, managing workflows, facilitating team cooperation, linking departments, coordinating tasks, and storing data. However, users caution against using it for purposes other than its intended use and highlight that compared to more advanced tools, it might seem basic and limited in benefits. It is also suggested to stay updated with appropriate titles and efficiently organize projects while using Basecamp. Additionally, Google Drive is recommended for file management purposes.

Basecamp built from its foundation as a project management tool. It has all the tools needed to make sure your projects are created, shared, and completed in the most streamlined process. It definitely knows what teams need to have effortless project sharing, and delivers exactly that. I can't think of how we would get our jobs done without Basecamp along the way.

We selected Basecamp for the low cost of entry for the org and the number of users who had previous experience on Basecamp. We ultimately will be transitioning to another project management tool that includes relational decision capability and Gantt chart capacity.

Comparatively, Basecamp has been found to be the easiest to use and onboard new users. Additionally the cost model for our organisation is much lower on Basecamp compared to the competition.

Other products are more aligned with Agile practices but for most of our operational needs, this was not deemed to be a necessity.

It's also a very attractive offering when you consider that adding more users doesn't increase your cost footprint.

Finally, the breadth of options available for integration to third party services is great and further reinforces why this is the platform of choice for us.

I thought Microsoft Teams may be a good alternative to Basecamp, and it was already included in our suite of Microsoft products we subscribe to, but it seems to be more of a collaboration tool than a project management tool. After review, Microsoft Teams is not suited to manage projects.

Asana has a free tier that has fewer features than Basecamp, so we opted for Basecamp for the additional ways we could use it. The Kanban board style in Asana is nice, but the document repository, chat features, recurring templates, etc. were selling points for Basecamp. It also has an integration with Harvest, which we use for time tracking.

Basecamp is better than alternatives like TeamWork and Asana. There are many software that are similar however the interface for me is better in Basecamp. It's user-friendly and it's a clean and simple way to communicate with groups and manage projects. It's cheaper than other alternatives as well.

Managing communications via the Basecamp user group is very similar to Linkedin or Facebook. It is easy to create events, control access rights, create posts or discussions that are viewable only by a limited audience.
I joined a group that was already existing, hence I was not involved in the purchase or selection process in evaluating other products.

I love both of these other products and would use them specifically for my own personal use or in other situations but hands down, I believe that Basecamp offers better flexibility and ease of use for an organization that has never used a project management tool before. Additionally, both Trello and Asana charge per user, which always makes finance question the business justification behind a product's use!

We used to use email and spreadsheets to track projects and tasks. Too many items got buried in too many emails, and too many spreadsheets were needed to track tasks, to-dos, and overall project management.

As mentioned before, we only use Basecamp for our remote developers so it's in fact chosen by them. I see Basecamp as a much simpler project management tool that's great for small companies. I did see they did a rebrand recently so I'm curious to see what's next for Basecamp and I may give it another go.

I'm not sure I've used a clear alternative to Basecamp. Perhaps Google Drive and its associated programs (Docs, Sheets, etc.). I don't have a basis for comparison, but Basecamp is great for what it is. That said, it's possible that there are other programs that integrated absolutely everything you use at your company that could be more comprehensive. We used Basecamp plus Tick Spot, which was a time tracking software, and that was a handy pairing even though it's possible to imagine one program handling both tasks.

Asana has lots of features but no Gantt charts which is kind of the basis for a lot of work that we do. On the other hand, the campfire discussion here is an absolute innovation.

Trello is heavy on features but locks us to a certain view which may not be suitable for all the users.

Basecamp is very useful for people of all ages including students and employees. It assist you in synchronizing your tasks, so that you can complete all of them and perform the best. Plus, it also assists in giving the best communication feature like message board for teams in which they can discuss about their project or work and collaborate in the best way possible.

We liked Basecamp as it was initially free to use for 30 days. Further, there were some interns in our project who used the product at their university. There were videos available on how to set up and use the product. For us, it was the convenience of setting it up and hit the ground running fast so that we can focus on the project. We had internal and external users in the project and with basecamp it was easy and cost effective to onboard team members on to basecamp.

Basecamp is perfect for small-time collaboration. It's suited for projects that need organization but not granular detail. When you need more than a simple little bit of help, you'll be looking at other solutions at that point. Very straight forward and to the point but that is also a problem if your company is growing.

Honestly, I didn't evaluate Basecamp when I brought it over. I'd been using it at a previous job and thought it would be a good fit. It was an easy sell because it was simple enough that even our least technologically savvy people could pick it up, and the low cost made it an easy sell to the executive management.

Our team selected Basecamp because it has a simple design, is easy to use and has all the tools we need to follow up on our projects. Allowing our team to stay organized, communicate effectively and perform tasks from a single platform.

My previous company felt that it was an "all in one" platform because it was one place to house our documents, it has the messaging option, and it was easy to keep track of important dates through it where clients/assisting teams could see.

Basecamp is probably towards the bottom of the totem pole here based on what our needs were. Trello lacks reporting as well, but there's much more customization with Trello. Asana has more reporting and integration capabilities. monday.com is my favorite so far. The amount of customization, reporting and different views are pretty incredible.

Workfront was way too robust for our team to manage, while Basecamp is very easy for any user to set up and does not require lengthy training sessions. Communication within Basecamp (at the project or company level) is much easier to facilitate than in Workfront or Trello. Basecamp organization of projects and teams are more easily visible.
