What is Basecamp?

Basecamp is a web-based project-management tool developed by 37signals in Chicago and launched in 2004. The Ruby on Rails framework was extracted from the Basecamp project.

Basecamp offers features standard to project management platforms, including to-do lists, wiki-style web-based text documents, milestone management, file sharing, time tracking and a calendar, and a messaging system. Mobile accessibility is supported. Notably, it supports unlimited users. It also offers integration with 37signals' own Campfire product, which expands the group messaging functionality of the core platform. Customization, accessibility, and functionality are extended further by the broad range of apps available for free from 3rd parties. A 2-month free trial is available. Pricing is dependent upon space requirements and the number of concurrent projects, not the number of users.

Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Basecamp:

  1. Learn and Utilize Basecamp's Features: Users recommend taking the time to learn about all of Basecamp's features and functions. They suggest getting training or working with someone experienced in Basecamp to fully utilize the platform. This recommendation helps users make the most out of their Basecamp experience.

  2. Set Up a Standardized System: Many users suggest setting up a system or process that everyone can follow when using Basecamp. This recommendation helps to ensure consistency and streamline project management within teams.

  3. Consider Other Tools for Advanced Functionalities: While users find Basecamp handy for organizing projects, offering instructions and feedback, some reviewers suggest using a more advanced tool, like Monday.com, for large teams collaborating on projects. They advise evaluating additional functionalities and comparing prices before deciding on Basecamp.

Overall, users recommend considering Basecamp as a low-cost option for small teams with straightforward projects. It is recommended for organizing projects, managing workflows, facilitating team cooperation, linking departments, coordinating tasks, and storing data. However, users caution against using it for purposes other than its intended use and highlight that compared to more advanced tools, it might seem basic and limited in benefits. It is also suggested to stay updated with appropriate titles and efficiently organize projects while using Basecamp. Additionally, Google Drive is recommended for file management purposes.

I have made the switch to Trello - I prefer the templates and community aspect; my organization uses JIRA to manage the tasks and handoffs between the various stages of a client project; we are using BetterWorks to manage overall business goals and quarterly objectives.

While I played no role in the onboarding or decisions of Basecamp or Salesforce, I did find Salesforce to be much smoother with much more capabilities available. With that being said, Basecamp is still a solid platform that I would still recommend, especially for businesses just interested in a cloud-based project management tool.

Basecamp is more entry level and has a much easier set up than most of the competitors. I greatly prefer Trello, but when I am working with new marketers they always suggest Basecamp. Basecamp is good, but it is just so easy to get the multiple pieces of a project jumbled together into one conversational thread.

JIRA is a project management tool for IT developers built on the Agile principle, while Trello is built on a board style methodology. monday is a grid style project management tool that works great for visual project management. Basecamp on the other hand is all about team collaboration on tasks and schedules. Basecamp is not just a project management tool but a team management tool in my opinion. As such while Basecamp has some similar features to these other tools, it stands out with its integration of chat, storage and scheduling, team management and an all in one approach.

Both Basecamp and Asana are great project management tools. I think where Basecamp excels is with tracking. Teams can keep track of schedules and deadlines. You have deadlines with Asana but need 3rd-party applications to keep track of how work has been done in a particular project.

Basecamp for team growth

Basecamp helps groups work together by keeping all messages, documents, work lists and calendar in a single location that is easy to access anytime and from anywhere. Manages tasks and reporting of tasks completing. It can be accessed through a mobile app or through web version. Using Basecamp has helped the growth of our team. It has increased productivity and is accelerating output. It notifies us whenever a new message arrives which keeps us up to date on a project. It is easy to access, its design is so simple to understand and use. It is continuously updating and adding great new features which help a lot.

I have used both Asana and Basecamp and have liked both for different reasons. I like Asana for solo projects and to keep a running to do list. I think the layout and interface just works well for that. For client projects, I think Basecamp is better because it's a bit easier to use and is laid out easier so it's quicker for someone new to a project management system to understand. Both programs technically do the same thing, but each has their strengths in those areas.

Trello - Good for personal task management, but I feel for big groups who are unfamiliar with the tool, it can be confusing.

Slack - Great for team communication, but might not be a ideal solution for clients. Leads to someo of the same problems with email communication (lack of people seeing messages).

It is an easy tool to use, organize your activities so that you can complete your projects, and allows you to do what is necessary to achieve it, unify your work team, assign tasks, reminders in a simple way, makes you more productive, you manage to plan in such a way that your business ends up saving money and time.

I have found Basecamp to be a much easier to use project management software. The setup is much easier too, you can have a project up and running quicker with Basecamp. It seems more intuitive to uses when they receive a Basecamp invite, on logging in and figuring out what projects they are part of and also what assignments. If you don't need such a granular level of control, Basecamp is the better choice.

Basecamp is a similar type of software but is on a totally different playing field than Monday. Basecamp is definitely a lot more bare bones, it is a task tracking software and that is all. Basecamp is more of a "To Do" list where as Monday is a full-on task scheduling, time scheduling, communication platform. Basecamp is definitely more for the small team or small business. We grew out of Basecamp eventually and moved on to Monday.

Haven't tried any other software or platform other than Basecamp, but before the purchase process we reviewed other products and they seem very similar and the decision that got us to buy Basecamp was because of the price and the understanding of the web page related to the features that Basecamp came with.

  • Asana Alternatives and Elementool Competitors
Comparing Basecamp and other project management tools, some features of Basecamp helps more than other software. Asana is more popular for task management and project management than Basecamp. Basecamp is a platform that helps you connect people with different profiles and roles. It also supports a lot of add-ons, apps, and API integrations. It features a calendar, Interactive Gantt Charts, task scheduling etc.

JIRA was the best software for our development team which i was in charge of. Its definitely more aligned to software development and offered us a good platform to handle dependencies and software releases (versioning). This is something that Basecamp was lacking. Asana stacks up well with Basecamp, it really depends on what type of projects you're running and what your needs are. Asana offers a very dynamic kanban board, which Basecamp Lacks. Asana offers the same functionality as Basecamp with checklists which makes it a very strong competitor. In the end i would recommend you to try out both to evaluate what suites your needs best. Right now we're using Projectplace due to its support for GANTT charts, this is something that all the other softwares lack.

We use Insightly for internal task management and, while it does its job, it wouldn't work for how we use Basecamp. They are intended for different uses and Basecamp really shines in its role as a task/project management piece of software. If you're in the market for a solid CRM though, give Insightly a look.

Basecamp is better in terms of better project management, module development, and agile product development. JIRA would be better in time tracking and Agile. But, overall project development is better than all in Basecamp. Asana is a ticketing system only for task management. Trello has good communication aspects. But, overall Basecamp gets the top product position.
