Big Commerce is used entirely for running my online retail business and does a great job of it.
  • Provides a nice selection of themed templates making development easy for non-technical, small businesses, website developers.
  • It allows me the opportunity to see my online business activity at a glance with snapshot options.
  • It appears that sometimes my stock status is off. It is possible that it is the result of operator error, but there are been several instances that I know it was some glitch in the system. Not a major concern at this time, but I have noticed the events.
  • I have not upgraded since initially setting up shop, so I cannot say if the there have been any changes in functionality, but I would like to be able to change the search option on my website version without the need to write code as I am not knowable in that area.
In general, I am very pleased with BigCommerce. It is well suited for the novice online retailer with limited experience. For the most part, use is intuitive and simple.

If you have the interest and time to participate in forums, they're available to you. If you're looking for more hands off, I'm not sure what is available.

BigCommerce handles all of our eCommerce needs. We've been using it for almost 2 years and it seems like I continue to find new and better ways to do something my old website struggled with. We're a small company, so I'm the primary backend user, but we have hundreds of customers who use the website to place orders as well as get pricing for purchase orders issued by their school or company.
  • Answers to BigCommerce questions are only a chat or phone call away. I've received excellent customer service whenever I reach out.
  • Integration with extensions (or apps) that extend the functionality of your site. For example, we implemented ShipperHQ from the start. The standard shipping built into BigCommerce is good, but we needed the ability to offer deliveries in our own truck and freight deliveries in addition to the standard UPS and USPS shipping options. ShipperHQ works seamlessly with BigCommerce to provide those specialized services.
  • I use AvaTax for sales tax solutions. I don't know if this is a BigCommerce issue or an AvaTax issue. Since we're a brick-and-mortar store who offers a website, we need to be able to tie sales tax calculation to the location of the sale. That means if a customer comes to our store to pick up an order, they are charged our local sales tax. If a customer prefers to get the order shipped to them, then the sales tax rate at their location needs to be charged. This is something where selecting "pick up at store" should override the shipping address the customer entered for themselves, but there hasn't been a good solution yet.
  • I'd like more options for coupons/promotions/marketing. For example, it'd be nice to have a promotion that says if you spend $250 during December, or buy a certain high dollar item, you get a coupon code for 10% off or $50 off to use in January. This would encourage repeat business.
It's a great eCommerce platform that can grow with your business. I've recommended it to friendly competitors, some of our vendors, and even customers (artists who make pottery for sale).

We use BigCommerce in our gift hamper business. As our business is exclusively online, we are totally reliant on BigCommerce to showcase, market, sell our products, and fulfill orders.

Big Commerce is used for two e-commerce sites used by our company. It is the only platform we use.
  • BigCommerce has an easy to administer order process.
  • Excellent marketing tools.
  • Integration with some 3rd-party software vendors is not easy.
  • Marketing Analysis function does not work with the latest Apple browser.
On the whole, it is suited to our application, but perhaps some functionality should be developed to make inventory functionality easier for apparel applications.

I have launched and managed a couple of e-commerce stores, primarily B2B, for two of our affiliated businesses, Precision Zone, and Alfra Tools. These stores carry Industrial Automation solutions, tools, and supplies. Currently, BigCommerce is our primary e-commerce channel, although we are starting to ramp up our Amazon presence as well.
  • Excellent customer support.
  • Feature-rich platform.
  • Not all store features are available on lower-tier plans, such as the faceted search, for example.
I am thoroughly impressed with what the team at BigCommerce is doing to create a scalable and modern e-commerce platform. BigCommerce is well suited for both B2C and B2B stores, offers plenty of features, integrations, SEO optimizations and so on. Before launching our stores on BigCommerce, I went through a series of trials with other shopping cart platforms, and BigCommerce came on top of that comparison. In my case, the deciding factors were excellent support response times, quality of that response, as well as some features missing or less developed on competing platforms. For example, I highly appreciated BigCommerce's support for multi-level product category trees. Overall, I remain very satisfied with BigCommerce as our e-commerce vendor and highly recommend it to any company.

BigCommerce is one of a number of e-commerce revenue channels we pursue. Our organization is e-commerce based so BigCommerce is one element of that. Our products are primarily one-of-kind legacy technology pieces, such as laboratory equipment and, discontinued industrial spare parts. These ‘long-tail’ items require exposure through many different sales channels. BigCommerce provides us the platform for one of those channels.

  • In-depth support with our IT person: sometimes it appears to border on condensation. Not good. Not professional.
  • We can’t get the Wordpress API to work. Appears that there’s not much real support behind it for small businesses. Disappointing since you’re flogging it as a real solution.
  • Shopify is going to eat your lunch if you don’t continually add value to your customers. I haven’t seen any real big changes to the platform in all the years we’ve been using it. You better wake up. I’m not the only one that’s looking at them.
Good for mature e-commerce businesses looking for a hosted platform.

  • Technical online excellence with 99.9999% uptime.
  • Platform structure that makes it easy to run my business - and not the website!
  • When first starting, Options and Option Sets were confusing but now I've mastered that with the help of tech support in Austin.
Having been on the web since the beginning, doing all of my own codings, I find that my hands-on background served me well so that I now use the extensive and sophisticated structure offered by BigCommerce and am able to customize it to suit my needs.

  • Back end database controls our order processing with customized order status names

  • Ability to control status actions is missing
  • Will not send a tracking number link for shipments. Just sends a number without identifying the shipper.
Ecommerce of product sales is what it is designed for. I would not use this platform for a service company.

As a web developer/consultant, I use BigCommerce for two clients. Having used self-developed e-commerce and other "canned" systems through the years, Big Commerce removes the headaches and ongoing maintenance associated with those other systems. Their support is outstanding and the platform is continually evolving to deliver a best of breed solution for online vendors.

  • Flexible platform.
  • Third-party add-ons.
  • A Business to Business solution for companies that need to provide a portal for wholesale customers.
  • Template vendors should be required to provide lifetime upgrades - free of charge. This would eliminate having to pay the template vendor to fix previous functions that no longer work - due to changes in the BC software.

There are certain products in our mix that lend themselves to online selling. So we created an online store specifically for those products since the purchasing decisions are often made outside our call pattern. We started with another well-known online host over two years ago, however, they did not understand our industry and posed limitations on what we could list. BigCommerce has made it easy for us to properly list our products, provides an excellent app for our eBay gateway, and provides an excellent, seamless shipping application. The help chat is very good, and they are able to resolve all issues that I may have.
  • Communicates with users via monthly webinars with updates and future plans.
  • Flexible options for product, order and customer listings as well as for checkout and payments.
  • Need a more robust product quote app selection for customers to request a product quote from the product listing. Also needs to provide the option of the user to create a separate product quote to the customer.
  • The product bulk editor is great, however, it would be nice to have a pull-down menu that is populated with additional editing solutions.
I have already recommended BigCommerce to colleagues. It is well suited for small businesses as well as large businesses. The theme selections are good (I use the BigCommerce Cornerstone theme) and allow for very creative designs. For me, the BigCommerce Shipping app is very useful as it automatically integrates all orders, prints the labels, allows for shipper selection and automatically notifies the customer of tracking information. I cannot think of a scenario where BigCommerce would not be appropriate.

BigCommerce is being used across the entire company. We have built an online retail storefront using BigCommerce and the Venture Warm theme. It made it easy for us to create an online store, process credit cards online, manage inventory, connect with Google's Shopping campaigns, and connect with Amazon. I am very happy with the functionality that BigCommerce provides.
  • BigCommerce's user-friendly software makes it very easy to build an online storefront.
  • BigCommerce makes it very easy to process credit cards online through PayPal's Braintree interface.
  • I am disappointed with the Venture Warm storefront theme. I was recently trying to figure out how to change the main image based on the color option a customer chooses. I was told that the theme doesn't have that functionality. Instead, customers have to click on a box that says "preview variant" which is an awkward extra step.
  • Would like more options to customize my storefront's appearance without having to write the HTML myself. For example, changing the logo size on my storefront is difficult with the limited options given through the theme.
I think BigCommerce is an excellent tool for online retailers of consumer products. I don't see that it would be as beneficial to sellers of online services or B2B businesses, but I could be wrong. The functionality seems to be designed for online retailers of tangible products.

I use BigCommerce for our online store where we sell mainly CDs and film posters, as well as other entertainment memorabilia. I am the only user who does everything from design to shipping (it's a small company). I love how easy it is to put in new products, sort them, get paid, and ship them. BigCommerce is the easiest online store program I have ever used.
  • Listing products: easy and fast.
  • Receiving payment: safe, secure and effortless.
  • Giving partial payment refunds doesn't always work (sending refund via Paypal, not giving store credit).
  • I never get notified when someone leaves a notification with their order. Why is that?
Shipping orders is very easy and fun because it can be done so effortlessly. Everything is on one page and I can do anything from printing a packing slip to refunding some or all of the money.

We are currently using BigCommerce for our online store, The Soap Shack, and are in the process of opening another site with BigCommerce to handle our wholesale store. We have been using BigCommerce for over 5 years now. We have tried many other services out there but nothing has been better than BigCommerce. I feel confident with BigCommerce and know they will allways be here. Their customer support is also the best. I know if I need help I can get someone to help me 24/7. I would recomend BigCommerce to anyone needing a website and not have to worry about growing their business.

  • Fast.
  • I would like to see better rules engine for marketing shipping and sales.
  • More features so you don't need apps for things the system should do.
BigCommerce is great for an eCommerce site but lacks for B2B commerce. It is great for eCommerce the only problem I see is all the apps you have to use for things to work great. The apps slow down your site load speeds. I would love to see BigCommerce have better marketing for sales

We use BigCommerce for our online retail store platform to showcase our unique varieties of heirloom seeds, their history, uses, and photos.

The flexibility of the platform in creating engaging content, photos, and videos has increased sales while decreasing calls and emails asking questions about use, environment, and planting details. The ability to add extensive, detailed photos gives us the ability to show each variety from seed to harvest –a feature that isn't always available, or easy to accomplish, on other e-commerce platforms.

The security of the BigCommerce platform gives us peace of mind, and we can communicate that to our customers who appreciate the effort to protect their sensitive data.

Support is excellent - no matter whether it is a weekend or evening - we have always reached a caring and committed support person who takes the time to understand the problem and doesn't hesitate to reach out to other team members or engineers for unusual issues. Many times our issues were resolved on the first phone call, while others took some time for engineering to test and develop a solution, but we were informed during the process.
  • Support, as discussed earlier, is excellent.
  • The platform is built to be flexible, with extensive themes that are customizable to suit different industries, and plenty of apps and vetted partners for additional customization if needed.
  • It was designed with the ever-changing SEO and e-commerce environment, with regular updates and new features in response to changes in SEO and customer requests. After re-platforming and making the needed upgrades and changes to our online store, our traffic and conversion rates have consistently improved.
  • The abundance of functionality is overwhelming at first, but once you become familiar with the system, the capacity for what it can do right out of the box with no customization is more impressive.
  • BigCommerce is easy for our customers to use: typically a bit older with less technical experience and expertise than younger users. The single page checkout has saved us many questions and abandoned carts.
  • Inventory management is a little lacking. It does the job, but is a more basic approach. There are inventory management systems as partners, but for the most part they are much more than we need. There is a large gap between the entry-level and professional systems.
  • Kits and bundling functionality could be better out of the box. Again, there are apps and partners to set up more detailed needs, but there is a large gap between entry-level and large scale needs.
Well Suited:
  • Ecommerce with a few dozen or more products, with a mix of physical and virtual products.
  • Online sales of custom made, one-off products that need multiple high-quality photos, videos and extensive descriptions.
  • Online stores with extensive inventories that change regularly or are seasonal.

Less Well Suited:
  • Ecommerce with only a few virtual products.
  • Online service businesses needing client bookings and/or appointments.

BigCommerce hosts e-commerce for my website, venttabs.com. It also serves as the diagnostic tool and provides metrics on web sales/customer service performance. It also provides a blog vehicle and a link to social media services. BC provides technical assistance on an as-needed basis, including technical performance issues, some SEO advice but, limited.

We were a Yahoo site for the last decade selling retail games. When Yahoo sold their platform to Aabaco, we made the big decision to find a new platform. After researching potential homes, we found Bigcommerce. Since we migrated, we have found the interface to be user-friendly and the customer service is unsurpassed. We feel that if there ever is an issue, we will be able to have it handled quickly.
  • Customer support. In every avenue (phone, email, live chat) they are available.
  • They have a ton of templates, and within the templates, the sites are easy to use / manipulate
  • Their platform is new, not antiquated as our previous site with Yahoo and we are enjoying the new options.
  • Migration of our site (which was a one-time event) could have been more seamless - it has taken us a lot of time to get ready to launch.
  • Our PDF file links didn't migrate - we give links of PDF files for customers to view sample materials of our games. We are having to upload all PDF files individually into the system and redirect links manually. You can add images to the products, but not PDFs. This may be user error, but I've spent time trying to figure an easier solution to our issue.
I cannot think of a scenario where Bigcommerce would not be suited.

They've done a great job of simplifying the eCommerce experience for users. The easy to use platform allows business owners to scale as they go.   • Order management.
  • The BigcCommerce mobile app needs more work, it is not something I can use for everything.
BigCommerce is well suited to take on new eCommerce businesses as well as existing ones. Overall, the platform is great - but it does need to compete with Shopify. In order to do that, they need to have a smoother integration with a variety of apps. I also feel that they need to work on getting more useful apps over to this platform.

We use this as the entire business entry platform for our business. This includes our own website, interface to eBay and other selling sights. All inventory management and front end to all other financial, tax, and shipping functions. Before Big Commerce, we only sold on e-Bay, but their systems were poor at best. We sell high volumes of products with an ever-changing inventory and this required us to use Turbo Lister for bulk product loads, then we had a purchase a third party Excel-based system called Auction Tracker which was difficult to use and very time consuming to maintain. We had a website that was informational only and given the fact that we were a start-up, it was very expensive to set a commercial website. BigCommerce pulled all those functions together for us. We have a commercial website, a good interface to selling platforms like e-Bay, great and easy inventory management systems, good tax support, and good data retrieval.

  • I have a lot of customers that are not really internet savvy, so they will call for information or discuss items and then will give me an order. BC has a draft order system, but the link to the order so the customer can pay is way too long and cumbersome for people who are not internet savvy. Needs some work.
  • I like to understand my inventory costs at all times and the only way I can get an inventory total is a download to Excel all the items and add them up. Big miss here.
  • An inventory order system based on recent sales vs. actual inventory would be very helpful. We have about 30 vendors and sorting thru all that is tedious and time-consuming.
The toy and model internet retail business is highly fragmented and typically run by small entrepreneurs that are not necessarily tech-savvy. BigCommerce has been a big help here and would benefit a lot of businesses like mine. I have actually recommended and shown my system to several friends and competitors. I've also had discussions with other small business owners who have talked about website needs.

It's used in the whole organization. It is the platform with which customers purchase our jewelry.
  • Ease of product updates.
  • Standardizing the format and way eCommerce needs to be run.
  • Having a good knowledge base.
  • A lot of things that I wanted the platform to have (when I started using it in 2014) have now been implemented, so it's hard to think of what it's missing currently.
Hard to say - it's great for eCommerce, which is where we are focused. I have no reason to think about other sectors.

We have used BigCommerce for our magazine business, including integration with shipping partners. We have been able to manipulate the template to meet our needs for 3rd-party links to our subscription fulfillment system, etc. It has been extremely flexible and useful in meeting all our needs.
  • The system is very user-friendly, and it took no time at all for us to be comfortable with using it.
  • The Big Commerce technical support is outstanding; they are available 24/7. I've never experienced this level of convenience and quality. It's second to none!
  • Sometimes our template has been a tad limiting, but we have worked around those instances successfully.
I think any business would find a template and functionality that would suit their needs at BigCommerce. Our subscription-based magazine model is probably one of the more challenging scenarios, and we have had success making it perform to our requirements. No problems at all!

It is used across my whole business. It keeps my online retail business looking professional and makes my website run smoothly. I originally built my own website. With BigCommerce handling it, I have time to do other things to grow my business. I love that there is someone available 24/7 if I have an issue or a question. I do not like that I have to pay other companies for some of the apps that I feel should be included in every website.

  • Continually keep updating to keep up with the ever-growing needs of websites such as working on any platform.
  • The are little things with the dashboard that would make it quicker to use. I’ve discussed them with a representative.
Since I found a good template, BigCommerce takes good care of the backend of keeping my website operating smoothly.
