BigCommerce is a dream compared to Magento. Magento in not intuitive at all and nothing is where you think it should be! BigCommerce all day over here! I will say there are some functions I miss from Magento such as the ability to schedule promotions.

BC is much more superior than Shopify for micro-businesses because of its strength in SEO without investing in professional search engine customizations with just the default out of the box plan.

When we first started we were on WordPress, but they didn't have the integrations we needed to fully realize our vision of our site. Shopify was another super suggested option, but once again the integrations were not there. Not to mention the hidden sneakiness of a throttled website did not appeal at all. It's tough enough to get people on the site, without the company hosting our store limiting the number of people we could be getting. There is none of that with BigCommerce. All of the other companies seemed like they were more interested in pumping themselves up, while BigCommerce understands that if the site they are hosting is successful then so are they.

Big Commerce easy to use

I have used 3DCart and an early version of a GoDaddy store. I also tried Volusion - but their cart would not allow quantities of over 999 in the cart. I sell inventory tags and people often order 1,000 or 2,000 tags at a time. BigCommerce is easier to use than any of those.

Shopify and BigCommerce have very similar goals, but to solve the problems we wanted to solve we picked BigCommerce. BigCommerce had more features that we wanted built-in. For example, Shopify does not have a store credit function so we would have had to pay for a third-party app that may never provide the same level of functionality as a built-in function. Also, Shopify only lets you use your own FedEx shipping account for third-party shipping calculation if you pay for their highest-price tier service. And lastly, Shopify does charge transaction fees on top of credit card processing fees if you don't use their Shopify credit card processing service. To us, the choice was simple and we feel we made the best decision.

We went to Shopify as it had many benefits for the same money:
Stripe AI fraud detection system.
Easy Liquid language, made Shopify easier to modify.
BigCommerce did not have an integrated messaging program.
Shopify image handLing for customers is more intuitive as it scales the image size for you.

BigCommerce was easier to set up with templates that could be customized. BigCommerce helped with onboarding. Customer support is excellent, in the US, and very well trained. The cost was comparable for the service I received.

We started our online quest with PrestaShop many years ago. As a small startup then, Free had an amazing sound to it. It served its useful purpose but was held together with bubblegum and duct tape. The included functionality was always buggy and we needed to pay a coder to fix problems as they arose which seemed to be every week. My only regret was not migrating out of PrestaShop 5 years earlier but the pain endured through that experience makes us appreciate how simple and effective BigCommerce has been for us.

If you've been in the eCommerce business for long and don't roll your own solution, odds are you've compared Shopify against BigCommerce. We started on Shopify but decided to switch when Shopify wanted to penalize us 1% of our gross sales for not using their in-house credit card processor. We technically couldn't use their processor, as our products were against the processor's ToS (but not Shopify's), which just added insult to injury. Even if we could have though, you convince your customers to use your services by offering good value and a better product, not penalizing them into submission.

All that said though, we've found BigCommerce to be more "power-user" friendly anyways, so we've been happy with our digital home and have had no desire to switch to something else in almost half a decade.

My business previously used Big Cartel which was perfect for a small artsy business. However when we grew, Big Cartel did not have all the functionality that we needed - such as subcategories and sub-subcategories. Wix was attractive but it felt a little like an instagram darling and we were after a bit more substance. Shopify was a strong contender for us and we rated it for its attractive integrations and app offerings but its methods of categorising products did not suit our busines. Magento and Woo were appealing for being entirely customisable but we could never begin to master either. Both would have been too complicated to use for day-to-day business.
BigCommerce offered all the bells and whistles that we needed, and more that we hadn't realised we did, plus it was easy to use and a reasonable price.

Shopfiy did not provide migration services from our previous platform. The help we received with migration saved our team hours of work and allowed us to be productive with other important parts of the business. Additionally, BigCommerce offered advanced features suitable for a wholesale business. Volusion required more time to maintain the store and a dedicated team member with a technology understanding. BigCommerce creates a system that is easy to understand for all team members. Not much needs to be said why we stopped working with Yahoo. Yahoo was out of date and we could not create a professional, modern storefront.

Other than Shopify all of these solutions require a lot of development and maintenance as they are very custom. Shopify had a good product for direct to consumer but not as good on the B2B facing side of our business. We also don't like the stance they are taking on customer data.

I've kept BigCommerce out of my loyalty to them. I also believe they are better able to accommodate my large catalog. Recent theme frustrations have made me look back into Shopify however I have not decided to change, I'm hoping to stay with BigCommerce and get these frustrations taken care of.

I spent 4 years on the Volusion platform. While being a website geek and loving all the options I had to make it very unique and specific, and the bulk edit for products was amazing, Volusion charging for bandwidth usage as well as the whole back end would be much more difficult for a non-geek to use and why I wouldn't recommend them to any of my industry friends (most are newbs in the website realm). BC is much easier to learn, manage and grow with.

Shopify I have researched and even done the free trial a couple of times, It was probably the biggest competitor in my opinion when I was searching to leave Volusion. While it has a couple of great perks/bells and whistles to it in regards design and flow for a customer, it is quite a bit more expensive the BC, Shopify has less built-in options (would have to pay for quite a few add ons/apps) and being not friendly at all to our industry friends that did go with them, I'm beyond glad I went with BigCommerce!
