Currently BigCommerce is more expensive than other competitors, however, we are set up and doing very well on the BC platform. At this current moment the main reason I haven't switched is because of the time needed to switch over to another platform. If BC would lower their price slightly, it would never cross my mind.

Magento 1 was sunsetting so we initially looked to upgrade to Magento Cloud or Magento 2 Open Source. The conversion process was horrible and unable to be performed by our staff. The costs that developers quoted us were upwards of $100,000 PER SITE (we have 6!). This, of course, was not an option. We then reviewed many other options and narrowed down to Shopify Plus and BigCommerce. Frankly, Shopify was not responsive at all to our requests so we abandoned them.

We initially narrowed down our search based on the features that we needed and our belief that the platform would have them. This was in addition to SLAs, support, etc. We came down to Shopify Plus and BigCommerce Enterprise. At the end of the day, we felt that we would get better service with BigCommerce than Shopify and that we would be able to be involved in the process of adding new features as opposed to being just a number.

This is the only solution I have tried for this website. For other websites, I have used private virtual servers and Big Commerce is much more stable and much easier to use. When I did my initial research I was trying to decide between Big Commerce and Shopify and one of the reasons I choose Big Commerce is it came pre-loaded with more features which would need to be added separately with Shopify.

We really liked BigCommerce because being a firearms related company it is very difficult to find other platforms that will even work with us. BigCommerce has been nothing but supportive and makes our job much much easier.

We used Shopify, Squarespace and storenvy. All were bloated and had a lot of unnecessary and useless features and at a cost that did not seem beneficial to us. In the end, BigCommerce looked like it would work best for our online / brick and mortar model that we run. Also the back end was advanced but still easy to use. Honestly compared to Squarespace or storenvy where the colors and blocks are hard to read and to organize did a lot. I know a little about coding and doing this after years of doing this business, but a lot of our employees don't and can easily get lost in the backend when trying to do something. I don't have enough time to go through and walk each employee through everything on the back site so it's nice that it still has a linear approach and ease with dealing with it.

Interestingly, this choice was made by a member of our Accounting Department after thorough research, who was computer savvy but not at all a developer. I took over wielding the platform to our needs just as I became part of the company, but I'm a developer so many things were more straightforward to me, and my perspective was more on making the platform work for us no matter what, as an alternative just wasn't an option anymore. I hope this dynamic will add to the necessary context of this review and speak further to the appeal of BigCommerce to non-developers and developers, alike.

We started the business on Yahoo! Merchant 15 years ago. Yahoo! had a difficult to use proprietary language called RTML that I had to learn to be able to customize the pages. There were many things that I couldn't customize or couldn't access. I was really excited about the switch to BigCommerce. The biggest thing I didn't like about BigCommerce was that all of my changes were live on BluePrint. I really wished there was an easier solution than having to copy all of the files from a Sandbox account over to my store. It was hard to keep the changes up to date between the live store and the Sandbox. It seems like this has been fixed somewhat with Stencil and this was the only feature that we had with Yahoo! that I was surprised was not available on BigCommerce. My company bought its biggest competitor and this business came with a Magento site. That was when I researched other ecommerce solutions and decided on BigCommerce. I could not switch away from Magento fast enough. It made me very nervous to be responsible for everything on the site especially things like the shopping cart or security updates. I am a decent programmer but the learning curve was very steep with Magento. BigCommerce was a dream to work with compared to Magento.

We were using Magento, our initial platform for several years. We switched to BigCommerce because they were a more robust platform and offered 24-hour customer service, which we did NOT have with Magento. We were always looking for a new IT company to help us with our updates and security that needed to be done. We never had the ability to just call a number for help. BigCommerce helped us find a new IT company to design our new site, and we have had received custom meetings to go over the site to see if they can help us find new apps to load to help communicate with customers and increase sales. We have saved money switching to BigCommerce, doing the same things all through BigCommerce than what we were doing with multiple companies before.

The main thing that BC was better at is offering a lot of options for each item that we absolutely need with the nature of 99% of our items. Where BC is lacking is their slow customer support and the fact that they charge a lot as our order number increases.

We initially launched our store with Volusion which failed miserably as they would not allow us to create our own SKUs so we had no way of matching our product's online SKUs with the physical store. BigCommerce offered us the ability to have the same SKUs for our products as they have in our physical store. We left Volusion after 4 months and switched over to BigCommerce.

I've also used Ultracart, Wix, and Square for shopping sites. Amoung the hosted platforms it's hands down my favorite. It's most similar to Shopify except that Bigcommerce has more native features, which is a good thing. With more native features there is less dependence from app/plugin developers to keep their products up to date with the platform.

BigCommerce had the lowest start-up costs against three major providers; Magento, Shopify, and WooCommerce. Most of the costs were hiring a digital agency (a BigCommerce recommended partner) to style the storefront to match our primary website, while in-house marketing assistants did much of the inventory and customer upload. It was an easy process, and during scoping and business case preparation, this was one of the key features we liked and one that we still use today. We still use the services of the original agency we started with.
