Blackboard Collaborate is an online collaborative learning platform with both screen sharing and application sharing, web conferencing, and integration with Blackboard Learn, the primary learning management offering.Stop! COLLABORATE and Listen!Currently at Polk State College, Blackboard Collaborate is used as a synchronous learning environment in online and hybrid courses. Students are able to interact with professors while they (the students and/or the professors) are off campus and at odd hours. Students participate in guided online course orientations, study sessions, and workshops via Blackboard Collaborate.,The synchronous environment is great for online and hybrid courses. Students are able to ask questions and receive feedback in real time. The video option is great, especially for 100% online courses. It gives a face to the professors name--humanizes us a little bit for the students. The record option is wonderful for students who cannot be in class, students with special needs, enrichment/supplement, and content reviews.,Logging in can be challenging for students who are not exactly computer literate. The program's reliance on an updated Java can be a real source of frustration for students and parents. Accessing sessions once they've been recorded is a bit cumbersome. It is especially difficult for professors who are not as computer literate. Accessing a virtual classroom could be improved. I would like to see a customizable "button" or "widget" option that can be placed on a professor's webpage.,7,N/A,Nearpod,Google Drive, Dropbox, Desire2Learn,Yes,Product Features Product Usability,I was not involved in the decision-making process of either organization I worked for who use that product,Managing participant controls is very easy. Using the whiteboard is a cinch.,Logging on (if Java isn't up to date) Accessing recorded sessions. Accessing the meeting link to share with participants.,Yes,8Looking Forward to Collaborate UltraCurrently, we enable the Blackboard Collaborate tool in courses only upon request due to the complexity of its interface. However, with the upcoming implementation of the new UI, we are going to be opening up the tool to all courses system wide. The new UI is so much easier to understand and use, and I am confident that the adoption rate is going to drastically increase. Currently, some instructors use it for virtual office hours, some use it for lecture capture and still others use it for remote lecturing back to their class when they are off campus. Some of our organizations use it for web conferencing as well. With the greater availability of the tool next semester, I figure the use cases will at least be the same but more likely new ideas for using it will come about.,The new UI is so much more simpler to use. Every month more features from the classic UI are being implemented.,In my experience, the only bad aspect that I can bring up is that the video does not keep up with the audio and you will sometimes see that they are out of sync. I have also read that some people are experiencing degraded audio in their recordings. During the session the audio is fine but in the recordings it is not good.,10,Adoption rates have been low so ROI isn't what it could be. However, in our case, this is due to a lack of training about and on the product.,WebEx Meetings and Zoom,Blackboard,The new Ultra experience makes the whole process very simplistic. The new browser based WebRTC technology in the Ultra experience makes joining a session so easy without the need for any downloads. Navigating the session controls couldn't be easier.,When chat is busy in a session, it would be nice to increase the width of the chat window for easier readability.,Yes, but I don't use it,9Blackboard CollaborateCollaborate is a excellent online and remote classroom training tool that allows students to connect to class via a remote session. Features like: whiteboard, sync across devices, ability to make timed quizzes, and the ability to upload assignments and docs are some nice features.,Its ability to share the presenter's desktop to distance learning classrooms/students. Its ability to share the presenter's video feeds to distance learning classrooms/students. A particularly nice feature is the ability for an instructor to be able to share his notes with the class. It is nice that students can participate in the class as if in the classroom using a chat session. Students can actually see the instructor which makes them have a more personal experience. Whiteboard feature. The ability to upload assignments and docs is a nice features. Synchronization across devices and quick syncing time. Ability to make timed quizzes. Easy to learn interface for instructors and from what feedback I have heard it is easy for students to use.,Loading of presenter slides is not as intuitive as it could be.,9,Collaborate is not an inexpensive tool. However, integration into the Blackboard environment is excellent. If you are already a Blackboard school it is easier to integrate and use than other solutions. So, you may save money and time on learning a totally new environment and you will be more familiar with getting support from Blackboard. As a side note, Blackboard provides really good training documentation for Collaborate.,Skype, Wimba and Tegrity,80,5,Fully Online Classes Blended Classes: Part Online and Part in-Class Mixed Classes: In Classroom classes that have some student that are online students.,We have been able to reach out to students that cannot attend on site classes. Training of other faculty and staff can be done across campus without having to physically meet to have a conference or training.,We have several remote (satellite) campuses. So, I can see us in the future possibly having a dual location class where students in a classroom at more than one location can attend the same class. Multiple students in separate classrooms in separate locations. Collaboration and communication between faculty members.,9,9,No,9

Usability

Blackboard collaborate, is very easy to use, in my opinion. However, I consider myself fairly computer and technologically literate. Some professors, students, and parents I know who try to use the software have a difficult time with it.

Some suggestions for improvement--I think there should be an autostart tutorial for participants (and session leaders, if I'm being honest) with an checkbox option to "never see this again" if you find yourself to be an expert. It should cover the basics such as: the raise hand feature (or the other polling features), the chatbox feature, the whiteboard feature, and the mic/camera. This way, we don't have students freaking out when they enter the session and us having to calm them down every single time. It may make the program a little less "lightweight" which I know is what you're going for--but it makes the workflow more challenging for those of us actually using the software regularly.

Usability

Collaborate is a easy to use, easy to learn, and a well supported product. It is not overly complex yet it is quite feature rich. I think that most users (both instructors and students) should find it easy to use without much outside help.
