Blackboard is used on our campus as the online course delivery and management system. It is also used by instructors not teaching online as a repository for notes and quizzes and as a way to communicate assignments due to class cancellations or school closure. Since this community college is located in a largely rural area with major universities some distance away, Blackboard provides the opportunity for students to continue their education while working full-time. It also allows instructors to be more creative with their course content and bring visual content into their assignments that students can do asynchronously.

Unfortunately, working for a SUNY school, we weren't really given a choice. This CMS was mandated by SUNY to be implemented by all SUNY schools.

Blackboard is A-OK!

Blackboard was used by the organization I worked for previously as the primary system for the online classroom. It was used across the entire organization to facilitate learning and communication between students and faculty members. IT staff such as myself also had access to it to support users when technical issues arose. The Blackboard platform created a more streamlined and easy-to-use classroom for the students; much better than previous versions.
  • Blackboard allows users to communicate with each other very well. Communication is one of the most important factors in an online classroom, and through the use of the Mail tool, Discussion boards, and the Gradebook, students were able to have easy access to their instructors and speak back and forth freely.
  • Blackboard integrated support tools such as TurnItIn very well also. Having modules such as TurnItIn integrated into the classroom interface gave instructors the help they needed to make sure students were completing their work ethically. Having the flexibility to add these types of tools as needed is a great strength for Blackboard.
  • Blackboard's administrative options are also a strength, I believe, because as a support analyst, I needed to be able to see what my users were seeing. Blackboard allowed us to see both the student and faculty view to best assist both of these types of users when they encountered problems in the classroom.
  • During my time as a support analyst, many users would complain that the online classroom timed out entirely too quickly. Now as an IT professional, I understand that timeout is completely necessary for the safety and security of the user's account, but perhaps a longer timeout period could be set as a compromise.
  • Integration with Java functionality was always a huge problem with users, especially when new versions came out. They would be unable to add attachments, use the HTML creator, and sometimes have issues with viewing Grades as well. Now some of this could possibly be attributed to user error, but perhaps the use of another tool that is not as volatile as Java would be of better use in the online classroom.
I honestly don't think there are any specific scenarios where the Blackboard Learn platform would be inappropriate, especially for an online classroom. It is highly customizable which can be a great option for certain clients and is a bit more friendly than other platforms such as Desire 2 Learn.

Blackboard was used in the previous organization I was in as the primary LMS for students and faculty. It addressed the need for students to get their grades, assignments, etc.
  • Content delivery
  • Social networking aspects (but should continue to grow)
  • Grading
  • Needs fewer errors and better error messages
  • Too many steps on adding certain content (eg adaptive release on items/quizzes)
I think that Blackboard is better for larger institutions but smaller institutions might want to utilize open source products that can accomplish the same thing for a cheaper price. Also, not every business or institution that uses Bb needs all of the features.

Greetings,

Blackboard is being used at my campus as a learning resource for students and a "Best Practices" collaborative platform for educators. Blackboard is not only being used at our campus, but it is used throughout the entire district with thousands of courses being implemented for learning by students and professionals. It is an online resource that our students and parent enjoy and appreciate.
  • Frame content. It is fairly painless to upload content and then make it live for end-users.
  • Is user friendly. it is relatively intuitive and easy to navigate.
  • As a online course interface it is very appealing to our students who find the GUI simple and effective in delivering concepts.
  • It could be better in the area of delivering animated graphics and video streams.
  • Having an integrated instant messaging component would be very helpful.
  • It would be great if the screen real estate was more "free form" and not locked into the BB standard frame.
Great for online course delivery and faculty collaboration; not such a great tool for "real-time" lectures or content delivery.

Blackboard is my institution's learning management system. It is used throughout the organization in all departments for on-campus, hybrid, and online course offerings. It specifically helps instructors manage the administrative elements of their courses and focuses on document and resource sharing, testing (quizzes and polls), communication via email to students, and grade book admin. Nearly all instructors seem to limit their use of Blackboard to these key features and choose not (or do not know how) to take advantage of the advanced features. Some students also use the mobile app version of Blackboard.
  • Gradebook management. Although it seems many instructors do not use the advanced features of the grade book, it does a good job of organizing and tracking assignments created within the LMS and those that exist outside (but must be accounted for in the grading scheme).
  • Document management. Covers all the basics of making resources available for students to access. Submitting documents tends to work well, although sometimes the interface experiences difficulty with larger files.
  • Student communications. Email especially (of course), but the Announcements feature is also used quite often to good effect. The scheduling of announcements is a handy feature.
  • Course modules. Not a particularly popular feature, but the ability to setup modules within a course helps to keep things better organized for students to experience. Rather than dumping materials into many folders, the modules system helps guide students through the content as the instructor intends for them to do.
  • Overall interface design and layout. Other LMSs (such as Canvas) have a much more modern, evolved, and intuitive interface. The UI of Blackboard seems to be a patchwork of feature areas without a consistent experience throughout. In particular, instructors have a different view of many areas (e.g., the grade book and assignment uploads) than do the students, which causes some confusion.
  • Feature creep. Granted, a value point of Blackboard are the plethora of features available, but most instructors in my experience (including myself) seldom go beyond the basics. There seems to be just too many "buttons and levers" presented to the users all at once -- like a power plant control room.
  • Feature latency with other providers. Again, it seems Blackboard is slow to evolve in keeping up with the refinements of other LMSs. This doesn't mean more features, but improving the core competencies that make for an LMS that should be a pleasure to use. Colleagues at other institutions talk about features in their LMSs that Blackboard either does not yet have or did a hurried job of implementing.
  • Learning curve. Beyond the basics, the learning curve of Blackboard can be quite steep, especially for users who have some hesitancy with learning new technologies. Even for savvy users, the curve can be daunting when digging into some of the advanced features.
Blackboard seems less appropriate for learning situations in which the instructor desires a student-centered approach. Perhaps this is an issue with the concept of an LMS in general, but there doesn't seem to be a way to configure Blackboard to suite different teaching needs and learning styles beyond creating course modules and adding yet-more folders and directories.

No Chalk Dust Here

The college uses Blackboard to develop and deliver online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses for students. We also use it for faculty and staff training. It is the only learning management system used at the college and has been used here for quite a few years. It helps us keep our course content together and allows documentation for grades and communications between faculty and students.
  • It's super easy to use. Blackboard was originally developed for K-12 users and requires very little student training. It's mostly point and click for students. Faculty do need some in-depth training, but it's the simplest LMS I've used.
  • It's the biggest educational LMS, so they have a ton of experience in dealing with clients and IT departments. Our recent migrations and upgrades looked seamless from my POV - i.e. as someone not involved in the process.
  • They provide a lots of training resources for students and faculty on their YouTube site.
  • The biggest thing that annoys me about Blackboard is the HTML editor. It picks up the propriety code from Microsoft documents and adds it into the background of the text when you copy and paste from a MS product. This code slows down loading times for students which is especially important during timed testing and faculty don't even know they're doing it. I've seen test questions with at least 5 pages of code attached to it and another 3 pages attached to EACH question. Multiply that by 50 or 100 questions and it can really slow a student down. Blackboard really needs a "Copy from Word" button to strip this code.
  • I would love to use the module tool, however, it adds a Table of Contents that steals a ton of real estate from the screen. It would be great if that could be minimized.
  • The gradebook is terrible to use, but I haven't seen something better anywhere.
  • It's super expensive
Blackboard is probably best for institutions that are either really big or really small. Better options exist, but you really need to employ programmers to make them good, so it's usually not an option for smaller schools.

  • Easy to Navigate.
  • Gives notifications on log-in.
  • Classes and relevant information is seen on log-in.
  • Grade, posts, and other notifications do not automatically deactivate when clicked. The notification stays there. It takes several clicks to clear. Suggestion would be to make it a one-click deactivation for notifications.
  • Some notifications at log-in can not be dismissed. Please allow all notifications to be dismissed by users.
Blackboard provides everything that is needed to be a successful user. This includes the admin side where you just upload a document, create courses, and add content. There is no huge mess that is left. The learning curve is small, but well worth it. I was able to learn the system within days. It's a very effective and efficient program.
