Blackboard has been the industry standard for a long time but they have gotten somewhat complacent and allowed tools like Canvas to surpass them. To Blackboard's credit, they have been trying to roll out a new version called 'ULTRA' for several years now but it has been riddled with bugs and lacks many of the features, especially 3rd party tool integrations institutions would require to make the switch.

Overall I have found Coursera to be better for 'open' education or MOOCs and Saba or MyLearning to be better for CORPORATE Training.

I have not used anything other than Blackboard, even as an undergraduate and graduate student, so I don't have room for comparison. I went to and work at two major universities and they both decided to use Blackboard, so I feel that that speaks to it's functionality and reliability as a product.

I have taught at two other universities and using two other platforms, which I can not discuss currently. BlackBoard Learn has been the easiest to learn as Instructor. The ease of learning may be from the strength of the IT instructional support at my current university.

Sakai does not measure up well against Blackboard because it takes lots of manpower to maintain. It was also buggy.
From the reviews and my ability to play around in a demo account, Canvas is greatly superior to Blackboard. It is among the LMS products we would consider should we move away from Blackboard.

Drupal functions as a content management system and it is difficult to use it for learner data; however, the size of the Drupal community makes it a contender for eLearning through the ELMS module, which integrates multiple modules for dynamic course delivery. Moodle is similar to Drupal, but very plain.
Canvas and Canvas Cloud are easy to use and function very similarly to the essential LMS components of Blackboard. However, there is no textbook integration with Canvas.

We did a Desire2Learn pilot, and there was no comparison. Blackboard won out, even in its declining state.
We did a Canvas pilot, and, weighing all things, price, product, support, ease of use, ease of transition, Canvas ultimately won.

I think Blackboard has become a middle of the pack LMS with more user friendly options like Canvas and Schoology currently available to K-12 schools. While there are many robust features, the typical K-12 teacher and student needs a more user friendly interface and a faster route to disseminate and access content.

There are a variety of course management systems on the market today with varying levels of capabilities and features. As a leader, Blackboard provides an innovative set of scalable products and robust tools that help meet the institutional needs and strategies of colleges, universities, and K-12 schools. Strategically, when evaluating solutions for course management, it is valuable to not only look at the cost or features, rather, it's important to look at the entire portfolio of the environment that is selected. This includes not only the product but the leading work of that vendor and the community that is active and surrounds the use of the application across the nation and world. Blackboard has demonstrated success and value across the aforementioned areas and is a valuable solution for education in the creation of the next generation of teaching and learning.

We piloted Moodle for two semesters. We found Moodle refreshing and easy to use and comparable to Blackboard. The first initial reaction to Moodle was that "free" price tag that open source software has however after using it there were a few snags.

1. Although Moodle is "free", it requires someone knowledgeable in programming to install it on a server, set it up and maintain it. You still have the cost of the server and the labor to set it up and maintain it.

2. There is virtually no technical support other than forums for Moodle where as Blackboard has a team of people who are easily accessible. For our campus, I am the only software engineer. If we had Moodle and something happened to me, our college would be in trouble.

3. Blackboard is very robust and has a lot of bells and whistles. Although Moodle has most features, it is still lacking when you compare the two.

4. I am on a state wide distance education committee. We have pooled our resources together and get discount pricing for the state. This makes Blackboard very affordable for all colleges in West Virginia since we use a hosting company through our state committee.

Blackboard was much more user friendly than Moodle. Additionally, the graphic user interface was much easier on the eye. Blackboard allows course builders to customize their Blackboard courses just enough and limits them on changing the layout in excess. Moodle allows for too much customization and is likely to confuse the student population on how to locate content and interact with the instructor and fellow classmates.

Canvas is Blackboard's biggest competitor... I've been in the room when the CEO of Blackboard stated this fact. Their agility and ability to integrate well with other products makes their product very attractive. Canvas was not available at the time we selected Blackboard, and I feel that Blackboard has relied on the fact that the cost to switch to a new system is so high that customers will remain loyal. Overall, the value proposition that Canvas provides is hard to ignore especially as university budgets are shrinking. Desire2Learn aka Brightspace and the open-source market (Moodle, Sakai) really don't hold a candle to Canvas or Blackboard. They are just as (if not more) "clunky" and user-unfriendly as Blackboard is.

When we were evaluating a move from self-hosted Blackboard (version 8) in 2012, it came down to Blackboard Learn and Desire2Learn. Ultimately, we stuck with Blackboard because of faculty comfort. We had been a Blackboard customer for over a decade and faculty wanted to stick with what they knew. In the long run, Blackboard has made huge improvements over the last 5 years and we are happy with our decision to move to their Managed Hosting infrastructure.

Blackboard's discussion board and email system is more user friendly than that of Desire2Learn. I found it to be significantly easier to send mass group emails in Blackboard. However, the course content organization of Desire2Learn tends to be more intuitive and easier to navigate. Quizzes and assignment submission are about the same when the two systems are compared. In general appearance, Desire2Learn tends to look better than Blackboard.

As I am a contractor for this organization, I was not involved in the selection of the product. I can't even tell you for sure how many other products were considered. What I can tell you is that my contact in the organization that organizes my courses and moderates the sessions is beyond frustrated at the technical issues we've been having and is now considering abandoning the product, possibly for GoToWebinar or something similar.

The previous CMS used before Blackboard was Lotus Notes. Between the two, Blackboard is much more intuitive, easier to use, and more navigable. Lotus Notes was very cumbersome to use because you had to scroll through every users comments to find the last one. There was no choice to collapse or expand the threads.

I have also used Moodle which has many of Blackboard's best features; but Blackboard has many modules and "plug and play" components which enhance its utility far beyond what can be done with Moodle. Moodle is far less expensive a platform than Blackboard but "out of the box" Blackboard has much more functionality.

I have evaluated Moodle, Sakai, Desire2Learn, and more recently (indirectly) Canvas. By far, Canvas is the most promising of the bunch and accomplishes much of what it seems Blackboard would hope to achieve, but cannot or does so poorly. Moodle is the most interesting for its configurability and customization, but has become dated in its UI. Desire2Learn seems to have the best focus on actually being a true LMS in the sense of learning, rather than being a course management system in the sense of administration.

While not involved in the selection process, I have used other learning management systems at other institutions. Blackboard is robust and very easy for both students and faculty to use. Whenever I have been involved in choosing a LMS, Blackboard usually comes in first or second. I'm generally happy with it.
