I worked at an agency and we used it across the SEO teams for all of our clients. It made it easy for us to keep detailed track of how our clients were doing, to do deep analytical dives, present future strategies and to prove the value of the work we were doing. The graphs made reporting easy as well.
  • Visual representations. Clients love seeing the graphs and it makes it easy for non SEO people to understand what needs to be done.
  • Tracking large sets of data. BrightEdge allowed us to see hundreds of keywords, in different kw groups, and compare across a site.
  • Track multiple clients. BrightEdge made it easy for us to track different accounts and clients without getting data confused.
  • The recommendations are very basic (shorten meta title, change h1 to include a particular word, even when it's already optimized)
  • It doesn't understand clouds of keywords, so you have to input each variation of each word yourself and waste tracking space (since kw tracking is limited)
BrightEdge is great for a small business with a small SEO/marketing team that wants to start implementing SEO. It's also great for agencies who want to track multiple clients and be able to send them automated graphs and reports. Questions to ask are how many keywords you can track and at what cost, who else can view/access the account and what new features they are planning to roll out this year? You should ask yourself how advanced your SEO skills are, what your strategy for this year is, and how keyword based it is.

With search engine optimization becoming more and more difficult because of Google and other search engines "hiding" organic search term data from analytic platforms, Miles relies on BrightEdge to help us help our destination marketing clients maintain or improve their visibility in search engine page ranking. BrightEdge keeps up with the latest changes by the major search engines and offers easy-to-use tools to keep Miles clients ahead of the curve of these updates. It is very helpful that BrightEdge not only addresses optimization on a content level but also on a back-end/development level, allowing us to make sure our clients have optimized content as well as optimized title tags, headers and image tags. We have seen our clients make very positive gains in organic traffic and conversions from organic traffic since implementing BrightEdge.
  • BrightEdge keeps up with the ever-changing algorithm updates by the major search engines.
  • BrightEdge is easy to use and the interface is rather intuitive.
  • BrightEdge offers helpful and actionable recommendations for all types of site optimization.
  • BrightEdge's documentation can be lacking. Some of the new changes take a lot of tinkering around or practice before you can understand how to implement them.
  • BrightEdge's support at times can be slow or take days to respond. It is easier to go through a rep than the support line to get a question answered or a change implemented.
  • BrightEdge, thus far, doesn't integrate with Google's Universal Analytics and is spotty with Site Catalyst, tools that our clients use.
If you have a small site that is easy to optimize within your team and to update often, then BrightEdge isn't the right tool for you. BrightEdge works best for a company with multiple clients and many websites to optimize. Having a tool like BrightEdge lessens the workload for a content manager supervising the optimization of several sites. Key questions to ask would be what CMS/analytics platforms does BrightEdge integrate with and which of those does it not integrate with?

We use BrightEdge in our marketing department to track and monitor our SEO progress as well as our competitors efforts. BrightEdge allows you to track the rankings of specific keywords for your own website as well as other websites (competitors). It provides page audits and provides basic recommendations for structural code changes.
  • Tracking your rankings weekly
  • Comparing your rankings with your competitors
  • Providing detailed reporting on your SEO progress, rankings and Share of Voice
  • Outlining potential SEO problems and recommending solutions
  • The recommendations that are delivered are very basic and fundamental
  • The product focuses mainly on your ranks and structural SEO components and does not provide the most in-depth look at back-links or other potential issues such as duplicate content
The best uses of BrightEdge are:
  • Reporting: it provides great visual reporting and a weekly snapshot of your overall SEO health and to track the progress of you SEO campaigning efforts such as: earned media, content marketing, website changes etc.
  • Competition Insight: It gives you a weekly update on your competition and lets you know how you stack up compared to your competitors

Leveraged by the SEO team to help define incremental growth across landing pages and categories. The business problem it addresses includes prioritization of SEO efforts, showing the value of SEO efforts and the ability to define specific tasks that laddered to an SEO strategy. It also addresses helping clients understand blended/universal results so they could get a more accurate snap shot of which content assets (their own and their competitors) were performing in the SERP.
  • Great customer service and training.
  • Forward thinking new iterations of the platform (social and landing pages).
  • Their annual conference helps customers get insight into case studies and how other businesses are using BrightEdge.
  • The benefit of content, search and social integration is hard to measure, continued efforts towards development to grow integrated features would be great.
  • Would like to be able to turn off recommendations some times to push the learning and actionable insights that come from understanding the business and making strategic decisions about next steps.
  • The share of voice charts only show the keywords and competitors the user has defined, would like to see a more holistic definition of share of voice (like what we see in comScore).
Be as specific as possible about the business problem you're trying to solve. The more they understand your objectives, the better the tooling and training will be.

BrightEdge works with our team to ensure that we doing everything we can to optimize our site content for maximum searchability. The team at BrightEdge helped us by pointing out key flaws in our previous operations and has helped us get on par with current best-practices. We meet with our account manager every two weeks to go over current progress, and she assists us in finding the next area of focus.
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Keyword Discovery
  • Search Traffic Analysis
  • Their platform is definitely not something that a novice could pick up without some assistance from their team.
  • It's not immediately obvious what all of the tools do, and how best they can be leveraged to direct action.
When Google switched to safe search, our ability to track our search traffic decreased dramatically. When this happened, Brightedge started to report on a page-level basis. This was a good solution, but took a while to roll out.

We use it from an agency standpoint, who mainly focus on the hospitality industry. We use BrightEdge to augment our ongoing SEO efforts across many different client websites. As a tool we use it to mine for opportunities we have within the sites to add or remove certain keywords as well as seeing areas of opportunities to increase organic ranking wherever possible.
  • It provides insights as to how your optimization efforts stand up against competitor terms and shows you your "share of voice" as it is called within the program.
  • Provides a platform for anybody to go in and understand where there are opportunities for SEO improvement.
  • Some of our clients are older legacy clients and are still accustomed to receiving SERP reports, so it fills that need as well.
  • Sometimes the user interface has proven to be less than intuitive for some of our analysts, and has made them hesitant to fully adopt the program.
  • Some of the new product additions, like the integration with Google Webmaster Tools, was extremely difficult to implement, seeing that we had to try to do it for over 100 different websites.
  • Setting up dashboards and reports is time consuming initially, but is a nice feature once in place.
I think it is important to stress, as my company originally adopted BrightEdge strictly as a SERP reporting tool, that it really is a full on SEO management system with the capability to truly show areas of weakness and opportunities. It does require time to use the interface, and training is essential. Once a user is comfortable with it, the results are quickly measurable.

BrightEdge is being used by the eCommerce team to analyze SEO performance across our properties and to give greater insight into our strategy to help make critical business decisions.
  • BrightEdge is a very robust tool which allows for analysis across many websites at once.
  • I particularly like that this tool provides recommendations on how to increase your SEO presence at a very detailed level
  • It's very easy and intuitive to create and download reports
  • We've had to undergo several internal training courses to get everyone up-to-speed on how to use all of BrightEdge's features. It is not the most user-friendly system if you've had no prior exposure to it.
I think BrightEdge is very useful for a large corporation that needs detailed information on many assets and places a high level of importance on SEO strategy and reporting. I would not recommend for a small company.

We are using BrightEdge in Marketing to achieve our SEO goals and generate net new leads (B2B business).
  • Ease of use and setup
  • Tons of SEO and marketing data interpreted in an easy to understand manner
  • Very comprehensive
  • Covers mobile, social, technical aspects in addition to SEO
  • Site Audit tool
I think that BrightEdge is a great tool for an experienced SEO professional. It may be somewhat overwhelming to a beginner but in experienced hands it's gold. It has great collaboration functionality to engage less experienced team members and delegate work load.

We used in in conjunction with our company's proprietary tools to help provide metrics and insights for SEO on multiple clients. Ranking, content optimization, movement in the SERPs, etc.
  • Quality metrics on keyword ranking
  • Graphing and reporting
  • Dashboard is easy to drive and understand
  • None right now I can think of
The tool needs to provide the metrics a client is looking for, as well as provide tactics for improvement in the search engines for keywords. Having a discussion with the client, to better understand what they are looking for, and referencing what this tool 'can' and 'cannot' provide.

BrightEdge was being used by the SEO team at our company to monitor rankings and performance of large groups of keywords, on a regular basis. We also used it to understand page level metrics and get SEO recommendations at the page level. The other feature that we used BE was to gain competitive insights.
  • Keyword performance and rankings chart. The charts made it very easy to present to a broader team.
  • Page level recommendations.
  • Competitive insights.
  • Ability to sort by customized time.
  • Tabs that are not intuitive, some of them could be blended into the others- need a lengthy training to understand.
  • Could improve upon the backlinks information
Overall, it's a useful tool to understand the performance of the website, especially the graphs that depict the rankings for each keyword. The competitive information is also very useful. However, on the other hand, given the Hummingbird update, it will need to incorporate the new focus on quality content in a more singular manner.

We use it to track keywords performance, revenue, and market trends. It is used by our SEO department and it addresses our keyword performance.
  • User interface provides data we need to create reports
  • Navigation is user friendly
  • Charts provide enough data
  • Their team is working to improve customer service
  • Linking module can be improved.
  • Page level reporting should include historical data.
It is a robust software that provides most of the data needed to report to stakeholders of the company. There is room for improvement and we are working with them to make these improvements.

BrightEdge was used by our department as resource to track progress of SEO / keyword impact, to find opportunities, and to use in reporting. Using this tool allowed us to easily communicate with clients, showing them the results we were providing through our online marketing initiatives. Looping BrightEdge into Google Analytics was also very helpful.
  • Find opportunities from competitors
  • Research new keywords to track and optimize for
  • Pair keywords and pages for in-depth recommendations
  • General recommendations a bit too broad
  • Can be annoying when you try to add keywords and you run out of room in your account. You have to go back and delete. A simple swap would be more efficient
I would recommend BrightEdge to colleagues that have multiple high level clients.

BrightEdge is used to improve the company's web presence. It is used for on page and off page optimization. It is used to track our competitor's keywords and to build backlinks with high domain authority.
  • I have been working with back links and I like how BrightEdge allows me to see who our competitors are linking to.
  • I have used keyword discovery to gain insight into top competitor's keywords.
  • I also like the fact that dashboard reporting is so easy to customize for our changing needs.
  • I would like help with sorting back links according to country codes. I haven't discovered how to do this.
It is a great product, but probably not affordable for small and mid-sized businesses.

BrightEdge is used by the Search and Site Optimization team to monitor keyword and page rank as well as competitor analysis.
  • Frequent updates and feature improvement
  • Resource and blog access - loads of knowledge passed on by the BE team
  • Shifting from keyword focus to something more page-centric.
  • More canned summations would be welcome. Sometimes you look at the data provided and don't realize what you might be missing or what exactly the data's communicating.
I haven't priced BE but I feel that smaller organizations might have trouble utilizing the tool - both for budget reasons as well as overcoming a limited SEO knowledge base. That's one reason I'm an advocate of summarized explanations of what the data might mean - just something to point novice users in the right direction with a better chance of being able to ask the right questions and find the right answers.

BrightEdge is currently being used by our organization to monitor the SEO performance of our clients. It is used by the Search Engine Optimization department, however the reports it generates are used by the sales departments within the organization as they are reviewed on a monthly basis directly with the client. The platform allows us to monitor clients progress, organize vital account information, benchmark clients against the competition, as well as keep track of events that happen across the board in SEO or with each individual client.
  • BrightEdge allows us to monitor the competition specified, allowing us to find their strengths (keywords, backlinks, etc.) and use that to further our clients' success.
  • The platform also allows us insight into opportunities we may have but do not know about, with the Share of Voice tool and Keyword Discovery and SEO Performance tools.
  • The dashboards are easy to manipulate and easy to understand allowing you (and the client) to see data in multiple ways, plus there is no limit to the dashboards created.
  • Wide variety of Search Engines to choose from - Global vs. Local, Desktop vs. Tablet or Mobile, Google vs. Bing, etc.
  • The local search engines available are based on demand, therefore they are not available for every location and sometimes not even available in certain states.
  • While the Events tab allows you to add Events to any account, going back and finding events is not easy to do as there is no "Search" functionality.
  • The "Save As" functionality in dashboards does not always copy the dashboard exactly, and will default some charts.
I would suggest the product for larger companies with multiple clients or multiple SEO campaigns. The vendor is beyond helpful in making sure you understand how to use the platform, and working with you to find the best ways to tailor the platform to what you are looking to do. I can't say enough good things about the vendor's communication and follow-through.

At Walker Advertising, the Online department (a division of the Media department) were the primary users of BrightEdge. However, reports from BrightEdge were used to share with managers, as well as the CEO and COO.
  • The Recommendations were particularly useful for me, since I was the Content Producer at Walker. The insights were critical to the development of new content.
  • The Analysis / Share of Voice module was great for understanding how our efforts stack up against our strongest competitors. This helped us better prioritize our work and tighten our focus.
  • The Reports and customizable desktops were very useful in explaining the work the Online department does, and most importantly, the link between our SEO efforts and online lead generation. It helps validate our work!
  • Streamline functionality for completing tasks. Sorry, that's my only complaint.
If you're producing a lot of content, and you probably should be, having a tool like BrightEdge is critical for understanding what those efforts are accomplishing -- e.g., what areas need improving and what the competition is doing. Having this sort of analysis is not only good for prioritizing but also for demonstrating to key stakeholders the value of SEO.

I really liked having bi-weekly phone meetings with our BrightEdge rep, but because of our different levels of usage, it probably would have been more helpful to tailor those meetings to specific users.

BrightEdge is used regularly by several members of our marketing department. We use the SEO tools to help us develop and curate our online content. The BrightEdge platform allows us to efficiently create, assign, and complete tasks related on webpage optimization and link building. BrightEdge is also helpful in allowing us to compare the success of our key terms to our competitors.
  • BrightEdge continually adds new features along with new educational tutorials. This keeps the product fresh and dynamic.
  • BrightEdge allows users to easily create and assign tasks so that team members can easily work together on a project.
  • The recommendations section provides easy-to-understand instructions for improving the performance of key terms and pages.
  • The pricing for the product is a not entirely straightforward so it is difficult to compare the price of this product to competing products.
  • The sales team is somewhat pushy.
BrightEdge is very helpful for on-page optimization. Even if someone on your team is not well-versed in SEO, they can easily follow the recommendations offered by BrightEdge. The BrightEdge platform is excellent for external link tracking. BrightEdge was being used among all SEO analyst in my previous company. It provided very competent competitive review of our SEO performance against all other major rival sites. It also gave a complete overview of industry performance to help us measure our success rate on SEO.
  • accurately and timely present ranks of keywords over a spectrum of period for our global clients
  • The depth of the data and how it was able to compare different sets at the same time going back 2 years

Though I use many of the different formulas, graphs, and layouts that Brightedge offers, I find it's more useful tool is for pulling key words straight from my sites and monitoring those keywords in great detail. It's a very useful tool that I use daily when making social media posts on behalf of my company.

BrightEdge served as the main SEO platform in conjunction with multiple other tools by the SEO department. The SEO Technical Specialists were the primary users of BrightEdge as it assisted them with ongoing competitive analysis, keyword rank tracking, management of SEO recommendations, and was utilized for 50% of the monthly SEO report. The platform was only used within the SEO department but with the month after month SEO success it was backed by the marketing executives. BrightEdge also assisted the SEO department with getting approval from marketing executives for SEO initiatives.
  • The Competitive Analysis features increased productivity by eliminating the manual process of performing a competitive analysis.
  • The competitor monitoring reports are not just data dumps and instead dashboard can be configured to display competitor data and visualizations.
  • Usability. One of the main strengths of BrightEdge is its usability. The platform is intuitive for any level of SEO expertise and its clean UI provides a great user experience.
  • The SEO recommendations aren't advanced or innovative but are derived from webmaster guidelines and SEO best practices. Don't get me wrong, SEO fundamentals are essential for long term success but you would expect more out of an "enterprise" SEO platform.
  • While BrightEdge does integrate with 3rd party APIs, it is limited. For example, SiteCatalyst was integrated but very few metrics were accessible and none of the reports were interactive.
  • BrightEdge only keeps historical data for active keywords and competitors. It would be very useful to be able to archive and import historical data.
Is it worth the investment? Since BrightEdge is a relatively large financial investment, I would ensure that the primary users of the platform have the time and ability to use all if not the majority of its features. While BrightEdge has a lot of features (that you pay for), it's important that the users of this platform have adequate time to use and experiment with all of the features.

With BrightEdge, we are easily able to pull data and show the client how much postiive impact our team has had on their business.
  • All keywords are easy to sort within specific groups, and one keyword can apply to multiple groups without an extra cost.
  • Keyword and page recommendations are a nice place to go to in order to pull insights for people new to SEO and do not know where to begin.
  • Template dashboards allow for easy creation of reporting tools that are created specifically for a job role (i.e. CEO, CMO) - allowing the most important KPIs to be pulled for reporting purposes at any time.
  • When comparing data week over week, the time frames clear whenever a different group needs to be examined for the same time frame. Keeping these weeks static will increase efficiencies when comparing multiple keyword groups across the same time frame.
  • The new page reporting that was created in response to (not provide) can be improved. Often times, agency reporting is provided on a monthly basis, whereas estimated visits and revenue are generated on a weekly basis. Adding an option to pull in monthly data would be extremely helpful, or will at least encourage my team to use this feature more.
  • More feedback for the new page reporting - I don't feel I can trust the estimated visits from keyword rankings. Allowing synchronization for ClearSaleling and other larger platforms as well as the option to compare page metrics with keyword rankings will make BrightEdge the ultimate SEO tool.
BrightEdge is an excellent tool for agencies because it allows multiple accounts and domains to be managed under one roof and very easily. For those doing in-house SEO, it is also a very helpful tool if there is a dedicated resources managing SEO & content marketing. For those who do not have a dedicated resource, you may not be getting the best use of this tool for the price unless you feel you have enough knowledge to pull exactly what you need from this tool.
