BrightEdge, pony up the cash (and time!) and you won't be sorry

BrightEdge is a great SEO tool. A bit challenging to use at first due to the tools' high level of expertise, but after a bit of training it really proves itself invaluable. I recommend this tool to other SEOs, and recommend getting certified (a free process once you own it) to be able to use the tool to it’s fullest.
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Challenging to use without trainning
  • Time consuming
  • Entry level SEOs will have a hard time using this
If you're willing to spend the money, it's a great tool. BrightEdge gives you so much more knowledge, and actionable insight than anything else on the market I've worked with. The reports are deep. That being said, if you have a small budget, this is not a tool for you. Or, if you aren’t willing to take the time to learn how the tool works, this isn’t a tool for you. You must be willing to make the monetary and time commitment to use BrightEdge to its full potential.

As part of a globally coordinated roll-out, our Digital Customer Experience team in Japan used BrightEdge to activate our SEO strategy, and to align it with the business directions as set by our global organization. Of course, SEO is not a localization process, but a custom strategic approach for each language and for each business.
  • Clear view of performance of keywords
  • Suggestions on how to improve, especially on-page actions
  • Excellent support and training from our local team (once we made contact with them)
Cons
  • SEO is complex, and the message of the BrightEdge tools is not always clear
  • New UI was introduced in late 2018, but the reasoning is not always clear.
  • Connections between lists, groups, etc could be more clear
Excellent for in depth, long term SEO process. Quick wins, quick starts, easy sharing of simple metrics is less easy.
There is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning, and this can lead to giving up on the tool, as many users are not dedicated SEO experts, or don't have the time to dedicate to the tool.

I worked at an agency and we used it across the SEO teams for all of our clients. It made it easy for us to keep detailed track of how our clients were doing, to do deep analytical dives, present future strategies and to prove the value of the work we were doing. The graphs made reporting easy as well.
  • Visual representations. Clients love seeing the graphs and it makes it easy for non SEO people to understand what needs to be done.
  • Tracking large sets of data. BrightEdge allowed us to see hundreds of keywords, in different kw groups, and compare across a site.
  • Track multiple clients. BrightEdge made it easy for us to track different accounts and clients without getting data confused.
Cons
  • The recommendations are very basic (shorten meta title, change h1 to include a particular word, even when it's already optimized)
  • It doesn't understand clouds of keywords, so you have to input each variation of each word yourself and waste tracking space (since kw tracking is limited)
BrightEdge is great for a small business with a small SEO/marketing team that wants to start implementing SEO. It's also great for agencies who want to track multiple clients and be able to send them automated graphs and reports. Questions to ask are how many keywords you can track and at what cost, who else can view/access the account and what new features they are planning to roll out this year? You should ask yourself how advanced your SEO skills are, what your strategy for this year is, and how keyword based it is.

  • Brightedge, so far, is the best tool I used after the keyword encryption.
  • Very easy to use and set up dashboard or to get analytics.
  • Convenient for setting up dashboards and adding notes to send reports to clients or email to yourselves.
Cons
  • It really depends on how you set up your tracking codes.
  • Applying dates does not apply to a day or month set up. Starts on the first day of the week (a Sunday) and ends at the end of the week (Saturday).
  • 800 keyword limit, but can ask for expansion. But there are untracked keyword options to get ranking / search volume for keywords and the Webmaster tool has been recently implemented.
Make dashboards easy and tell stories. See which tracking code should be implemented onto other tracking softwares/programs.

It's a glittery reporting platform.....

BrightEdge is used by our Marketing Team for SEO. We have been using BrightEdge for almost a year. Our main goal is for BrightEdge is to help us optimize our webpages for Google search in order to increase our rankings, be found more often by potential customers and drive more visitors to our website.
  • BrightEdge does a good job with reporting.
  • It is fairly easy to create Dashboards that can be customized for what you want to see.
  • One of the newer features of BrightEdge, called Insights, can be helpful if you just have a few minutes to spend in the platform and want to find a couple of quick revisions that you can make on your website.
Cons
  • The set up / implementation was rushed and, in our case, not completed correctly, which caused many issues down the road.
  • Once you make changes to website based on the Recommendations in BrightEdge and wait for the weekly crawl, the Recommendations, many times, don't fall off of your queue, so you waste a lot of time researching things that were already completed.
  • If you want to change a large number of preferred landing pages around after the initial set up, it's a very manual process.
If you are just looking for a neat reporting platform, BrightEdge is great. We didn't find it incredibly helpful for page optimization, as a lot of the Recommendations that the platform supplied don't make sense on our pages. In addition, once you read through the Recommendations for a couple keywords, they are the same every time, so you don't really need the platform to tell you to put the keyword certain places.
