What is Lumen Edge Private Cloud?

The Lumen Edge Private Cloud is a fully managed pre-built infrastructure designed to provide high-performance private computing connected to Lumen's global fiber network. According to Lumen Technologies, this solution is tailored for small to large enterprises and caters to a wide range of professions and industries, including IT professionals, business owners, technology companies, financial services, and healthcare organizations.

Key Features

High-performance private computing: According to the vendor, the Lumen Edge Private Cloud offers fully managed pre-built infrastructure for high-performance private computing, seamlessly connected to Lumen's global fiber network. This is said to ensure optimal speed and reliability for critical workloads.

Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC): The Lumen Edge Private Cloud on VMware Cloud Foundation™ is claimed to provide a Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) that aligns IT vision with business goals. The integration of software-defined networking and vSAN Storage is said to deliver a completely integrated Hyperconverged Infrastructure-as-a-Service.

Packages: The product offers pre-built options or a tailored configuration based on specific requirements and conditions. The pre-built options include medium and large packages with different specifications of cores, RAM, and usable SSD storage.

Optional managed services: Lumen Technologies offers a range of optional managed services to enhance the cloud experience. These include management and orchestration integration, application lifecycle management, multi-cloud management for managed OS and applications, and advanced program, technical, architect, and security services.

Design: The Lumen Edge Private Cloud is built on a full stack of hyper-converged infrastructure from HPE or Dell, based on VMware Cloud Foundation™. The vendor claims it incorporates high-performance SSD storage, security and networking capabilities with micro-segmentation, and provides both pre-built and build-to-order options to match specific requirements.

Scalability: According to Lumen Technologies, the Lumen Edge Private Cloud offers seamless scalability to handle growing workloads and evolving business demands. The hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is claimed to enable the deployment of virtualized systems as needed, with minimal downtime.

Enhance performance and security: The vendor states that deploying workloads with pre-built hardware and managed infrastructure on Lumen edge computing locations can enrich user experiences, enhance application performance, and optimize security. They claim it meets the demanding latency requirements of 97% of U.S. enterprises within 5 milliseconds.

Speed IT innovation: According to the vendor, the Lumen Edge Private Cloud allows for the rapid deployment of virtualized systems with minimal downtime. The hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is said to keep all cloud solution elements, including compute, network, storage, and security components, readily available.

Get predictable costs and minimize TCO: The Lumen Edge Private Cloud allows businesses to leverage existing tools without the need for new hardware. The vendor claims it offers a predictable cost model, enabling businesses to understand their spending and quickly go to market with the capacity needed for interaction-intensive applications.

CenturyLink Private Cloud is a decent cloud hosting platform, we used it because we wanted to try something new as our old platform had some scaling issues. We were not disappointed. However it does have some maintenance issues, but I feel those are nominal and overall I'd neglect those if the pricing is right.
  • robust framework
  • amazing customer support in case you're facing maintenance issues
  • collaborative ability is off the charts
  • UI can be really improved, since it sometimes lags a lot
  • Very few know about the product, so they should advertise a bit more
  • There maybe scaling issues since it's a relatively smaller company compared to its competitors
CenturyLink Private Cloud is well suited for companies that are smaller and wouldn't have to undergo scaling for a longer time. Apart from that, it does well in almost all categories. It wouldn't actually be useful for bigger companies since the UI is a bit laggy sometimes and usually, it's not advisable for big companies.
  • Pricing - Very affordable pricing
  • Provides a wide range of plans
  • Customer support is very active and helpful
  • We reduced our cloud hosting costs a lot after switching to CenturyLink Private Cloud
  • Maintenance is very easy since there is documentation available for every part
  • It had some issues with the UI but we can neglect those considering the pricing options they provide.
It doesn't stack up that well against them, since these are big companies and have huge infrastructures and they provide smooth scaling features. However CenturyLink Private Cloud is a little concise and not many people know about it, so I feel like they should advertise more and try to improve their customer outreach.
