We do look at reader loyalty and engaged time for stories, but concurrents and pageviews are what we still focus on mainly. We've also dedicated ourselves to improving traffic on mobile devices, and seeing what content does better there. The pandemic affected that, however, with many more people using mobile devices working from home and skewing numbers for the last 18 months. CTR is something we pay heavy attention to when we are doing A/B headline testing. It doesn't necessarily impact what we publish, but it does influence how we present it to readers.

Our team watches how long visitors have viewed videos or other content elements to determine better content to embed or how to rearrage/edit articles and future articles.

We leverage popularity with a Chartbeat API to serve recirculation content based on what's most popular using Chartbeat metrics.

Reader loyalty lets us know when we're hitting our wheelhouse, or when we're dragging behind and need to pick up our game. Device type is somewhat useful in that it gives us a good idea of when something's askew (e.g., if we're usually at 60 percent mobile vs. 40 percent desktop, but today we're at 30 percent mobile, we could have a blind spot for something that needs our immediate attention). Concurrent users is a metric we use daily, repeatedly, for that real-time snapshot of how effective a story is.

It has influenced it somewhat, though not too much. We make editorial decisions based on newsworthiness and other factors, and seeing how newsworthy our users find certain content has helped us in making those calls.

Chartbeat provides a lot of metrics, combined with realtime [capabilities] this has a big impact on how we move content regarding user interactions. We use Chartbeat but not how our principal metrics provider. We use Google Analytics to do that, and mix outputs with Chartbeat and Piano to make new and more complex metrics.

Use of Chartbeat's reader engagement metrics has not changed the type of content we publish on Tribune Publishing websites, but it did change how we look at that content and allowed us to measure and think of success differently. Plus, Chartbeat's beaconing approach just provides better engagement data in some cases.

It's easy to know which stories are spiking because you can see that everywhere. Much harder is the impact a story has with loyal readers. Chartbeat's loyal reader metric is simple to understand and enables us to cut through headline scale and understand whether we're serving our loyal audiences - and what interests our loyal audiences.

We learn every day on what stories work and don't and it shapes what we do immediately. If loyal readers are returning to a subject matter, we can look for fresh angles on that subject matter. Recirculation rates are important to try and retain readers on your site and maximize the time they spend there. Linking to other linked or interesting stories that may hold the reader's attention is an easy win off the back of your initial story if you can get it right. Ideally, you want both a high number of concurrents and for them to stay on your stories and retain their interest to help advertisers get their return too.

It definitely allows us to see how people are engaging with content on devices and as we launched our new dynamic subscription model, we were able to see how this "paywall" may affect our reader's engagement and drop-off or bounce rate.

We often look at the amount of new users, regular users and loyal readers to see how many people continue to visit our sites. This is useful for seeing how far our stories are reaching to audiences. We also utilise the engaged time metric to see how long people stay on our stories. This helps to see how engaging our content is to readers. Concurrents is the main metric we use to analyse our performance in real-time, and as mentioned previously this gives us insight into what's performing best at a given time.

We've noticed most of our audience is mobile-based, so by using the data Chartbeat provides we've been able to optimize content from a presentation standpoint that is best suited for mobile device consumption, breaking away from a longstanding practice of a focus on the desktop versions of stories. We also emphasize search as a focus for traffic referrals and seeing how much of our audience is coming in from search plays a dramatic role in our SEO planning and story assignments.

Concurrents metrics obviously have a huge impact on the type of content we produce as it tells us what our audience likes to read. Device type gives us insight into homepage management on different devices; reader loyalty has helped us make informed decisions about the kind of content we should produce to attract new readers and what we should continue producing to retain our returning readers.
