What is Chrome Remote Desktop?

Chrome Remote Desktop from Google is a cross-platform remote administration and remote desktop tool that requires the Chrome browser and an extension. It is free to use.

The tool lets users remotely access a computer to view files or run programs anytime, from anywhere. Users can connect using a computer or an Android or iOS device, and other devices. Any type of device will provide access to the target computer's files.

Users will need to install Google Chrome on both the computer that will be accessed remotely (host) and the computer that will be used to connect (client). Then users must install the Chrome Remote Desktop extension on both the host and client computers. This extension is what allows the tool to manage remote connections, and it provides the interface for remote access. A Google account is also used to authorize the connection.

I have been using Chrome Remote Desktop in my Organization to work with my team technically. It is so easy and simple to use without any hassle. The user interface is also very attractive and easy to use and it is also easy to install and use. I can also connect with my other team members remotely to work on technical issues at my workplace. This is so helpful and I loved using this as I can connect with anyone anywhere without spending a peny.
  • Remotely connecting with any team member any where
  • Easy to install and use
  • We can transfer and documents easily with Chrome
  • Works fast with better net connectivity
Cons
  • To use this one must have Google account
  • Need to have faster Net connectivity
  • Apart from this I don't think there is any lacking point in Chrome.
This tool has helped me to connect remotely with my team members anywhere anytime to work on our technical issues. I can also transfer the file in the remote session. Previously before using it I was very worried about my work. but then I loved using Chrome and it has taken all my problems away

Excellent free option, but you'll get more with a paid subscription.

We use Chrome Remote Desktop to access certain resources that are only available on machines physically located at our corporate office. Only a few users need it, mainly in the accounting and human resources departments. While Chrome Remote Desktop isn't my primary solution for remote access, I use it quite often when other solutions don't work or are down for maintenance.
  • Can't beat the price -- it's free!
  • Setup is very easy, even for tech-challenged people
  • Interface is straightforward and simple
Cons
  • Locks you into the Chrome environment
  • Display options are limited when you use multiple monitors on the remote host
  • File transfer functionality is clumsy
For a simple remote access solution, Chrome Remote Desktop is an ideal option. It's easy to set up, connects pretty reliably, and lets you work as if you're sitting at the remote PC. If you need a more robust solution to access/support multiple machines, use multiple monitors, transfer files easily, or need to turn machines on and off remotely, you may want to look elsewhere.

I am using Chrome Remote Desktop to access my computer's desktop from my phone when needed. Only used in a single department, single person.
  • Desktop access from mobile devices
  • Desktop access from other computers
  • Don't have to be on the same network to access. You can use any internet connected device that supports the Chrome Remote Desktop app.
Cons
  • Built in file transfer would be nice.
  • Has sporadic issues with Admin pop-up permissions dialogue boxes
When you are away from your computer and you need full access to your desktop. Especially useful for when there is an app that is only supported on Desktop and not a mobile version.

A good backup option and free alternative

This is utilized by members of the IT department to have an alternative way to access their PCs when out of the office (and just in case the RDS server has issues and they are remote). As we have Chromebooks, this is a logical tool to choose to access the machines.
  • Easy set-up on target machines.
  • Runs on a Chromebook with minimal fuss.
Cons
  • Occasionally slow to move around (when in full screen), that I cant see if its a latency issue or a dodgy update.
  • Lacks file transfer options.
It's great as a home connection tool, or as backup access for users that need an alternative to terminal services. If you have users with Chromebooks, it was traditionally the only realistic option, but with the Play store, this doesn't hold as true.

Chrome Remote Desktop is one of the solutions we offer for connecting to workstations from our new chomebooks. If it ends up working out, we could potentially replace a large portion of our laptop fleet with cheaper chromebooks. We've found a large number of users only use thier laptops to remote into their desktops.
  • Setup is simple. Install the app, log in, choose a pin. You're good to go.
  • Performance is fast. I can even stream games fairly well.
  • The connections have been pretty stable. No serious issues.
Cons
  • The session can be seen on the screen of the workstation. Could be a privacy issue. It DOESN'T work like traditional RDP, much closer to a screen sharing support session.
  • There is no built in File Transfer. Its not a deal breaker, but definitely an annoyance.
Really the largest thing is that it shows exactly what you're doing on the screen of the workstation. Great for remote sessions to help someone, terrible for remoting into your own computer to get work done.
