A basic understanding of what the switch is doing or providing is required. Once they are comfortable with logging into a switch and recognize the basic code levels, it is fairly intuitive. With that said, it is much easier for someone who is familiar with the previous models of Cisco to just jump in.

We have various levels of skills on our staff. We have some Network Engineers with 15+ years of experience all the way to others with only around 2 years of experience. The more experienced staff makes the design and configuration standards decisions while the less experience engineers typically do day-to-day work such as port changes, OS upgrades, and minor changes.

We currently have 4 engineers on staff to support our 900+ Catalyst switches and 50+ Nexus switches in our campus LAN environment. All of our engineers are competent with the Cisco product and a couple that are Cisco certified. The great thing about Cisco products is that once you've learned one product from one particular portfolio, you have pretty much learned all within that portfolio since the commands are congruent amongst the different products that utilize the same OS.

We employ people with varying ranges of skill levels that interact with our Catalyst switches. On the low end, we have analysts with little networking skills that are able to manage these switches without difficulty, and they are able to learn/gain experience while working on them. We find that these switches are a good learning tool for our lower skilled workers to improve on.

We have two higher level engineers to program, configure and setup the network routing and switching. We also have two entry level administrators who do the day to day port configuration and physical switch deployment. A basic Cisco networking experience is needed for port configs. Anything else would require CCNA or higher expertise
