Since Cisco has been in the market for a much longer period, the Catalyst 6800 is known for its reliability, stability, availability, performance and scalability as it is built on the previous success of the Catalyst 6500.

We wanted to remain a Cisco shop, so we really only evaluated using Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switches. We've used the 3850s in other data centers previously, but for this new data center, we really wanted to make sure we were future-proofing as much as we could, and wanted the extra space to expand if necessary.

The Juniper lineup offers better pricing versus the Cisco line up but you do definitely lose some hardware prowess, and stability that you can count on with Cisco devices. Also the support is not as robust from Juniper as it can take longer and be more frustrating getting a support ticket going with them.

  • Cisco Nexus and Cisco 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 9000)
Although catalyst switches could be used in place of ASR routers; the additional performance provided by the ASR was recommended over the catalyst switch for WAN aggregation.

Cisco Catalyst switches have been around far longer than any of the competition. We know Cisco Catalyst switches are not going anywhere. Also Cisco has a history of stability and high level of uptime. This brand of switches showed considerable innovation with the hub and spoke management and configuration.

  • Juniper EX
Juniper seemed to offer fancy L3 features in their switches, but in the end the Catalyst managed to beat them on the performance tests we managed to make in our lab. Having good experiences with a product/company also has a great impact on one's choices - why would you go on and fix something that is not broken?
