They provide great connectivity and routing options in general depending on the model and allow us to automate the port configuration and management overall.

We stopped using the Cisco Catalyst 2960X series due to its age. The Catalyst 9200 Series is an excellent upgrade from the 2960X series. All the features that we were using in the 2960X platform are in the 9200 series. The 9200 series also has an improved flash memory that is faster than the 2960X. Also, the 9200 series support newer management features.

Cisco Catalyst Series Switches are well deployed and tested in different network environments for decades and most of them are success stories. Cisco support is also very distributed, fast, and easy to use. This gives a trustful mindset to select Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches over many other switch brands and selection is easier when comparing administration, ROI, and manageability.

Cisco Catalyst 9200 switches are a needed evolution from the previous 2960-X family that bring smart capabilities to the DNA and IoT era.
These switches also provide more power to enable new IoT areas such as PoE lighting and displays.
The enhanced security features in the new Cisco 9200 switches are also one of the most important features they provide over the previous generation.

I have always found Cisco devices to be more reliable than other brands. In this case, in my experience, I have noticed that some models of HP switches fall short against a catalyst. Some are even more complex to configure. I also consider that a key point that plays in cisco's favor is the quality that its support team offers.

The 9300 has wider model selection but with a higher price, has an improved ASIC and ability to run mGig on uplinks for future proofing, which is a better selection. but due to tight budget we had to stick with Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches and find an alternative to implement our requirements.

I use Cisco Catalyst Switches in my environment. In some occasions like small/home offices, I use Netgear switches. Netgear switches are cheaper and also reliable and easy to use. Netgear switches have also 10GB switches and are easy to stack or expand.

Cisco switches have more capabilities. In a more complex environment, I always use Cisco switches.

Cisco Nexus copper switches vs. Cisco Catalyst Series Switches is often a tough call. Typically, a datacenter deployment would dictate Nexus to provide all the features and functionality, as well as stability that datacenters require; however, the cost-effective nature of the Cisco Catalyst 9200 Series Switches means more bang for your buck and will probably be all you need unless you plan to go heavy into DNA or ACI world.

Cisco 9200's FTW

The 9200 switches are a great switch for reliability and processing. We use our 9200's for Layer 2 only switching, as well as use some 9200's in routing cases as well. The 9200's is a model number we use as our primary model number for upgrading our other switches like the 2960's and 3850's.

We were previously using the above listed switches as well as another one for the core. They were all one vendor once upon a time and then were all parted out to various vendors. This made it much harder to keep things in order when upgrading and getting support. Now we are much more able to do what we need to do without going to 3 different places.

  • Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE)
These are two completely different products with the Cisco Identity Services Engine enhancing the Catalyst 9200 with the deploying of profiling and posture of clients connecting to this device. In modern next-generation network facilities such as 802.1x are now being deployed as the de facto standard with compliance driving these initiatives.

Cisco 9200 Series Switches are the natural successor of the 2960X series, so they are getting what best from them and adding automation and DNA integration features. So it's hard to compare both of them. In the past, I had several opportunities to test network devices from other vendors but none of them have the same level of manageability and integration level as 9200.

We actually replaced various HP and Dell switches with the Cisco Catalyst line of switches with minimal fuss, but the enhanced capabilities are well worth the newer hardware we upgraded to. It also helps integrate with our Cisco Webex Teams and Cisco Meraki networking gear we have as well. They are easy to use as well.

The reliability that Cisco Catalyst gives you is hard to find with other vendors. In our memory of working with Cisco Catalyst. I can count on one hand the failures that we have had. Also, the compatibility that you have with other vendors really helps to improve the performance of your data center. They help reduce the implementation time of your solutions.
