What is Cisco Umbrella?

Cisco Umbrella, a key component of Cisco's secure access service edge (SASE) architecture, integrates multiple security services in a single, centrally managed, cloud-native solution to secure access to the internet and control cloud app usage. By unifying secure web gateway, firewall, DNS-layer security, threat intelligence, and cloud access security broker (CASB) solutions, Cisco Umbrella helps reduce the resources required for deployment, configuration, and integration. And, by delivering this functionality from the cloud, you can scale to meet the needs of a remote and roaming workforce, shifting network perimeter, and multi-cloud environment — all while simplifying security. Umbrella can be easily integrated with an SD-WAN implementation to provide a combination of performance, security, and flexibility to delight both end users and a security team.

We evaluated a lot of products. The good part is that we didn't go outside. So Ineos grew by acquisition and therefore we inherited a lot of products there. So we looked at the Netskope and Fortinet because they were within our sphere of product portfolios that we had in the company and those were the primary two that we looked at.

Better integration with other Cisco portfolio of products.
We have an enterprise subscription and Cisco Umbrella dns was already included as part of the offering.
Also we are looking into integration with sd-wan in sites where it is hard to provide full spectrum of services that are available in bigger sites with a lot of server infrastructure.

The main reason for selecting Cisco Umbrella compared to any other solution is the cost. The cost of licensing DNS security from Infoblox is too high. Also, setting up infoblox to capture user information is complicated. Moreover, cisco umbrella is a cloud service and can be accessed from anywhere.

I honestly have not compared Umbrella to other products. I know there are countless web content monitoring/filtering solutions out there but most of them require additional hardware, overhead, setup, etc. I didn't even consider them. To me it just makes more sense to filter at the DNS level. It is more unobtrusive and easier to accomplish. Not having to analyze network traffic beyond an IP address.

Auto SIG Tunnels is a feature that helps in provisioning tunnels automatically using Cisco Umbrella APIs and so this is one win for choosing Cisco Umbrella over others. With Cisco SD-WAN viptela, the Cisco Umbrella stacks up well because its the same vendor so less complexities and interoperability issues.

We needed a more descriptive view of our network traffic to keep on top of cyber security.
Our firewall would show us what kind of traffic was going on within our network but we needed a more specific view.
The firewall also allowed us to allow and block certain websites but Umbrella is more user friendly and more descriptive.

Meraki MX is the only other system that uses a system similar to Cisco Umbrella. The other systems use DNS filtering on the device themselves, which is more vulnerable than exporting this filtering service to the DNS provider.

I believe Meraki MX actually uses Cisco Umbrella as of 2022, but this was a recent change and their previous service was not as effective.

Previously we used the Squid browsing proxy for DNS filtering.

The problem is that it was all very manual, you had to define the urls to which you should give access or which you wanted to deny, but it was the IT staff who had to maintain this list.
The Squid interface was the console and when you already had a list of urls configured it was very difficult to maintain it.

With this tool, manual maintenance has been eliminated and the lists are always up-to-date.
With this we have achieved that manual maintenance is minimal.
