What is Cisco Umbrella?

Cisco Umbrella, a key component of Cisco's secure access service edge (SASE) architecture, integrates multiple security services in a single, centrally managed, cloud-native solution to secure access to the internet and control cloud app usage. By unifying secure web gateway, firewall, DNS-layer security, threat intelligence, and cloud access security broker (CASB) solutions, Cisco Umbrella helps reduce the resources required for deployment, configuration, and integration. And, by delivering this functionality from the cloud, you can scale to meet the needs of a remote and roaming workforce, shifting network perimeter, and multi-cloud environment — all while simplifying security. Umbrella can be easily integrated with an SD-WAN implementation to provide a combination of performance, security, and flexibility to delight both end users and a security team.

A cyber resilience strategy is vital for business continuity. It can provide benefits beyond increasing an enterprise's security posture and reducing the risk of exposure to its critical infrastructure. Cyber resilience also helps reduce financial loss and reputational damage which is the most critical in any organizations consideration while making any decision on purchase of infrastructure or services.

Umbrella plays an important role in keeping our remote clients safe from DNS-related threats, allowing our users to access websites more confidently. Setting up "Content Categories" properly also helps administrators to mitigate threats based on the topic we block (ex: Adult, Gambling, etc), once some of those are more prone to have malware embedded.

Whatever security system(s) you utilize - they have to be flexible and able to respond to different threats as they appear. If they are structured and inflexible then they can cause more harm than good. I've always found OpenDNS/Umbrella has had the ability to adapt and change to suit the need. You can exclude or include addresses. You can fine-tune the categories. DNS on so many levels is a fragile structure. Users have no idea. That's why OpenDNS/Umbrella is so important.

It helps with resilience by filtering devices from websites that good potentially be malicious. This is very valuable because the highest risk to security is typically the end users. If malicious sites are blocked through Umbrella then they malicious site will not be infectiong our systems. This is all about how well a company sets up, implements and updates Umbrella.

Cisco Umbrella gives you the opportunity to narrow down to a specific workstation to track down unusual activity or non work related activities. We had an employee that his work station was constantly trying to access a specific website without his knowledge and Cisco Umbrella helped us resolve the issue by tracking down the workstation.
