What is Cisco Umbrella?

Cisco Umbrella, a key component of Cisco's secure access service edge (SASE) architecture, integrates multiple security services in a single, centrally managed, cloud-native solution to secure access to the internet and control cloud app usage. By unifying secure web gateway, firewall, DNS-layer security, threat intelligence, and cloud access security broker (CASB) solutions, Cisco Umbrella helps reduce the resources required for deployment, configuration, and integration. And, by delivering this functionality from the cloud, you can scale to meet the needs of a remote and roaming workforce, shifting network perimeter, and multi-cloud environment — all while simplifying security. Umbrella can be easily integrated with an SD-WAN implementation to provide a combination of performance, security, and flexibility to delight both end users and a security team.

As part of our strategy, we decided to integrate Umbrella with the Microsoft Active Directory to have a better view of which users were the riskiest and be able to work on those. We ended up adding 2 Umbrella VMs (for redundancy) on our network and after that, we were able to have access to the information we needed.

I think for Umbrellas integration and implementation are practically the same thing. Or at least I can use them interchangeably. You make the decision to push agents to mobile devices and then for inside the castle you either set Umbrella to be your DNS or deploy the agents there as well.

We do not have Ciso deeply integrated into any other system. Simply we use the DNS filtering and the Chromebook client. DNS is easily pushed out to devices via our DHCP server. When it comes to Chromebooks the Cisco Umbrella extension can easily be pushed out to via the Google Admin Console.

Integrating Cisco Umbrella with our network was easy and everything is straight to the point.
We needed to integrate our website and our 2 separate Internet providers, which was extremely easy after implementing the 2 linux Servers.
After that we needed to integrate our Access Points with it as well which was just done with a few clicks.
