We're currently using Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* for our APAC digital marketing needs; mainly to keep an eye on any notable local news spikes.

*This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.
  • Customer service is excellent; they respond immediately.
  • The platform is very easy to understand and use.
  • The onboard process was quick and painless.
  • Including Baidu and Naver and international search engines in country specific results.
Very well suited for keeping an eye on trends and finding relevant brand articles.

My agencies use Cision daily for information on media professionals. About 80% of our company is pitching media daily, so this tool is essential for getting information about publications, members of the press, locations, etc. It's most useful when we're investigating a new publication or contact, and often has information you can't find anywhere else, especially emails and phone numbers. I know their teams verify contact information, but it's not always up to date. There are also a lot of people in Cision who aren't traditional journalists too, so you do still have to have some expertise to do successful media relations outreach with this tool.
  • Media contact sourcing
  • Inside details on reporters
  • Media movement and new beats
  • Researching media in new geographies or industries
  • The contact information isn't always accurate or up to date.
  • There are many contacts in Cision who aren't traditional reporters, whether they are bloggers or sponsorship contacts.
  • The search and list-building functions can be hard to use.
If you need to find contact info for reporters, especially phone numbers, Cision is invaluable. If you are a smart media pro, it makes you much better at your job. However, if you don't know much about media, Cision can be overwhelming and won't give you the insight you need to know what to do with the information.

Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* is being used exclusively by our communications and marketing department to determine ad equivalency of our media coverage.

*This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.
  • Customer service - very responsive and flexible!
  • Ad equivalency - a great metric to show to our board members and agency-wide what our coverage looks like in terms of ad $$
  • Highest readership - we are easily able to find articles that are making the biggest impact
  • Sometimes toggling between dashboards can get confusing
  • There are a few widgets we don't benefit from
Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite) is great for organizations that have a strict ad budget, but would like to know how editorials/coverage play into viability. Our organization was able to secure a discount, which was extremely helpful as we have a small department budget for resources like this.

The marketing team uses Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* to track various keywords and themes, as well as to create and distribute a brand reputation report to key stakeholders. It allows us to be daily involved in the tracking and monitoring of our company's name and our overall brand in the marketplace.
  • Cision Communications Cloud* is very easy to use, from the dashboard to the searches to the reports. After just a short amount of time, our team has been able to learn the functionalities it offers and use them, even at their most basic level.
  • I appreciate Cision Communications Cloud's* quick access to customer service. From reports not generating correctly to help creating a search term, a representative is always just a chat away.
  • Our team's onboarding was a bit of a hodge-podge and could have been more streamlined so that everyone felt equipped. It would be beneficial to have a complete guide to refer back to and share.
  • The search function works well, but I would like to have an up-to-the-minute or as-it-happens function that alerts me by email as soon as my search term pops up online (like Google Alerts).

Cision Communications Cloud is well suited to track mentions of our brand and our competitors, but doesn't work very well for up-to-the-minute tracking of various crisis situations or as-it-happens industry news. I still need to use an additional tool like Google Alerts to do this.

Cision Communications Cloud has great reporting capabilities and the interactive reports have been very beneficial to my team and stakeholders.

Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* is being used by across our whole organization to help quantify our PR efforts.
  • Cision aggregates coverage, so you never miss an article that mentions a client or a client's competitor.
  • Cision makes it easy to present media mentions by making it easy to build graphs that can then be presented.
  • Cision customer service is exceptional and can really help with anything. They are on 24/7 and are always friendly and ready to help.
  • Cision's platform seems to work a tad slow at times.
  • Cision needs a better method to measure ad equivalency and distinguish between print and online.
Cision Communications Cloud worked for our company because it was able to quantify PR, which has been a real problem for the industry. The platform has allowed us to track not just our earned mentions, but also syndicated mentions, so we have a better view of a client's share of voice and awareness. You can also easily build graphs on the site which make it easy to showcase and present your data.

Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* is used mostly in the communication department, but it provides valuable insights for the whole company. Especially the reports feature.
*[This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.]
  • Industry dashboard is a very comprehensive way to track the communication landscape around the company and brands.
  • Reporting features of Cision Communications Cloud are very powerful. It creates reports in a snap and the reports can be easily modified.
  • I like the opportunity to drill-down on individual widgets to see the information in more detail.
  • It is tracking publicity globally and it is a bit hard to narrow searches just to one particular language or country.
  • I would like to use some other features, but I am lacking the budget for those. Maybe some option to buy services for shorter period, i.e. campaign, instead of yearly contract will help.
  • Sometimes I get lost in searches. I am not sure if they are still relevant over the time.
It saves a lot of time in coverage analysis. It does not track all the media, but it does well when providing a picture around the brand or company. Maybe the data is not perfect, but to have some data is much better than not have them.

We use it in the marketing department for distribution of press releases and reporting on any coverage our company receives. It allows us to distribute company news quickly and efficiently as well as collect information that can help us develop better press releases in the future.
  • Distribution of press releases down the wire.
  • Report building and analytics tracking.
  • Media monitoring.
  • There is room for improvement in reporting. There can always be more information to collect.
  • The system at times slows down when you have to select a lot of press hits.
It's great for those who want to quickly get press releases out to the press. It gives you many options for specific demographics to target and it's easy to use. They now allow you to download a PDF prior to distribution to share among your colleagues.

We use Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* in the PR department here at the company to monitor mentions across both national and international media and to produce coverage reports for the senior management. It's a big time saver for us as a department given that we have control over the search criteria and the ease in which you can customise and produce the reports using Cision.
*[This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.]
  • Reporting - Quick, easy to use and the reports are fully customisable and interactive
  • Mention Tracking - Detailed and interactive breakdown of mentions day-by-day that has replaced our previous tracker
  • Searches - Very helpful when tracking different products that have different target audiences and media
  • Filtering out content - Difficult to filter out some mentions that are irrelevant to the product in question, particularly when there is just a passing mention
It is very useful.

Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* is used across the organization, but the use depends on the client account and specific project. I've personally used it on projects previously to monitor earned media coverage and to gain an understanding of a particular industry or topic's media coverage.
*[This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.]
  • The flexibility and customization options for the dashboard
  • The options for media coverage
  • Reporting options
  • I don't have any off the top of my head - Cision has been a vast improvement from our previous software.
Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite) has been very useful for monitoring. We had to monitor several key topics for one client, and it was very easy for me to go in and set up several similar dashboards, and for my colleague to access and review the results.

Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* is managed by the marketing and communications team at my organization and we use it to share news in the nanotechnology field. Media monitoring is a time-consuming task for public relations professionals like myself. Cision is not only useful, it is a necessity that literally saves hours of work every day.

*This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.
  • Cision is able to tailor your search query to your specific needs
  • Cision is entirely automated once set up which makes it easier for your organization.
  • Cision has a terrific earned media coverage estimator.
  • Cision can sometimes send irrelevant articles that drive employees away from actually reading email notifications.
  • Cision is expensive for start-up organizations, making it difficult to justify its subscription to senior management.
Cision Communications Cloud is a brilliant tool for large organizations that need to monitor positive and negative articles through a media monitoring system. It is less viable for small organizations because of the cost.

Being used by the Marketing & PR department.

It helped us measure the return on investment on our media relations efforts and prove the value of PR efforts to the organization.
  • Beautiful interactive reports.
  • Easy to use.
  • Responsive to specific needs of our organization.
  • I'd like to be able to archive critical mention TV clips.
  • The dashboard could be easier to use - not always as intuitive.
  • It is well suited for reporting media coverage on specific media campaigns, whether you want an overview or deep analysis.
  • It is well suited for looking at media coverage results compared to competitors
  • I use the alerts and spikes in coverage alerts almost daily.
  • The newsletter feature is a good way to report media coverage to our stakeholders - wish it was more visually appealing.

Southwestern University’s Office of Marketing and Communications uses Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* in our public relations efforts. It’s a great tool to find influencers to write stories about SU, monitor the chatter about SU and show our public relations ROI to our executives.

  • Giving your public relations efforts an actual ROI
  • Customer service (super quick and easy to work with)
  • Competitor analysis. It’s great to see how we stack up agains our like schools.
  • Dashboard customization. Would love the ability to change the colors so it’s easy for an executive to see SU vs our competitors on graphs.

Augusta University Division of Communications & Marketing uses Cision Communications Cloud (Trendkite)* to communicate the value and impact of earned media.

*This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.
  • The searches, dashboards, reports and alerts are easy to create and refine.
  • Customer service is accessible and almost always immediate.
  • Most importantly for us, Cision is always expanding and improving the platform based off of our needs and feedback.
  • Some of the items that are undergoing refinement and could use further update include auto-generated newsletters. Daily alerts are automatic, but for the most professional and useful round-ups of media, we find that they have to be hand-crafted.

I purchased Cision to help with media monitoring for clients and to use the media database.
  • The media database is OK but by no means definitive.
  • The customer service is appalling.
  • They miss a lot of press cuttings (I'd estimate around two-thirds?).
  • The user interface is clunky at best.
  • There's no notice period, so you're stuck with their awful service.
My experience with Cision has been awful. They miss a lot of press cuttings from a client. When I decided it wasn't right for me I was informed that as I'd signed a contract there was no notice period and I couldn't leave. The customer service has been consistently awful, mainly unresponsive. Their communication is appalling. They're not clear in what you sign up for and having used other press cuttings agencies I'd assumed there would be a notice period. There isn't. Six weeks in they still haven't sorted the direct debit mandate. It's just time consuming. They're really nice when you're signing up and then just rude when you highlight issues.

We use Cision to find the contact information of journalists, for the purpose of pitching them about our clients. It is used across the whole organization and is meant to save time and provide information that would otherwise only be available to those that have developed personal relationships with those journalists.
  • The interface is clear and easy to use
  • The product can anticipate what you are searching for and will show suggestions in a drop down menu as you are typing someone's name into the search tab.
  • It's a reliable source of information about publications including reach and UVM.
  • The platform can sometimes be very slow when conducting searches.
  • There are many reputable journalists and publications that are not included in Cision's database.
  • Sometimes information is out of date and an email address will be incorrect.
For building large media lists, this is a good tool. It's also good for identifying media influencers.

We use Cision Communications Cloud (Trendkite)* at NadaMoo! to analyze online press hits and compare the press we have received to that of our competitors.
*[This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.]
  • It compares our share of the press space to our competitors that we entered into the system.
  • The dashboard gives a quick look at press hits.
  • Cision has great customer support and are available to quickly answer any questions.
  • I wish there was a way to incorporate a full press picture into Cision and not just online articles.
  • I would like access to current, up-to-date press emails.
  • I would like to see more social interactions included in the picture for Trendkite like Facebook likes, Twitter retweets, Instagram engagement and YouTube listening.
Cision is great if your strategy is based on blogs, websites or other online sharing of articles. If your strategy is based on social or YouTube then this might not be the best fit.

We use Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* to track and analyze media mentions of Wesleyan University, our faculty and alumni. It is used primarily by myself and a colleague in the office of communications. It allows us to better understand how Wesleyan and its people are being talked about in the world and follow coverage trends.

*This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.
  • Cision does a great job of finding media mentions in a wide range of media, from TV and radio to major newspapers and small blogs.
  • Cision offers easy and attractive reporting features to share analysis over time with others in an organization.
  • Cision is always innovating, and is highly responsive to customer feedback.
  • Cision's customer support is extremely quick and helpful.
  • Cision's platform can be a bit slow and finicky at times. Some of its features are difficult to use on a small laptop screen.
  • Cision does still miss some media mentions, including those in major publications.
  • Cision's radio capturing technology does not seem to be functioning properly. I have difficulty locating the mention of Wesleyan within the audio clip.
  • I wish it was possible to see how many readers a particular article has, rather than an average of monthly visitors to a general website.
  • Some of the new features introduced by Cision (eg. SEO impact, total coverage vs. total web traffic) are not easy to understand, or I don't feel they relate important or usable information.
I find Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite) very useful for keeping on top of media mentions of Wesleyan. It can also be helpful in making PR decisions regarding which media outlets to target, though this information is harder to come by.

We use TrendKite to monitor our PR performance across various regions (NA, EMEA, APAC). The tool gives us insights into our overall coverage, our share against competitors and performance reviews of individual releases to measure the interest of our target audience for specific topics.
  • Unlimited amount of searches for maximum flexibility - big point for TrendKite.
  • Good customer support via live chat - problems are usually addressed within 24 hours and quickly resolved, plus we had a detailed onsite session at the Austin office when we started with TrendKite to address all our needs and wishes.
  • Regular implementation of new features to improve the platform.
  • A lot of pages still show content that is merely linked on a page (via "related articles" for example) as an actual release, thus providing wrong links and an inaccurate count of total coverage.
  • Copying entire dashboards and then altering the searches would be an easier way to create new dashboards when there is already a similar structure in place.
TrendKide is well suited for companies who need to get a clear insight into their global coverage in online media while providing flexibility to customize searches and dashboards for a large variety of different metrics. TrendKite would be less appropriate for companies who also want to account for print media, but that is sort of obvious I suppose.

We are using Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* to change how we measure PR, moving away from a strictly quantitative approach that measures volume to one that also measures quality of said volume. By using the Google Analytics integration we have a real-time view on how links put out by the PR team are impacting traffic to our website.

*This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.
  • Reasonably priced. Yes, there are cheaper solutions out there but also more expensive.
  • Good value for the money.
  • Unique measurement tools not available in other platforms.
  • The data is only as good as you make it. You need to put in the work with the data Cision outputs as the search results are sometimes too broad.
  • When using the Google Analytics functionalities, a basic understanding of UTM codes, SEO and Google Analytics is useful. I've finally started putting in this work myself, but at first it did feel like flying a bit blindly and relying on marketing ops colleagues to help me distill the impact of the data of our Google Analytics/Cision tie-in.
  • Pushy sales. The sales group was a little too aggressive. Our decision was being made toward the end of a quarter and even when I said we'd go with them, just not in this quarter due to a variety of challenges they continuously applied pressure for us to close that quarter.
A lot of vendors in the PR measurement game pride themselves in being able to offer analytics, media monitoring and media contacts lookup in one suite, usually as SaaS. If it's absolutely imperative to you that you only have one vendor for these three things, then Cision (TrendKite's)* lack of a contact database may put you off; however, for the specifics that it claims to do, there's little Cision Communications Cloud can't do - whether you have multiple brands and keyword terms to manage to the Google Analytics integration. The fact that all it does is media intelligence is what it sets itself apart - its product team's only focus is in doing that, and so it doesn't have to manage other products like some of its competitors.

Cision Communications Cloud (Trendkite)* is used by two users within the Communications Department. It is used for tracking coverage, we use the coverage search per topic a lot, to show how a certain press release or topic has done. We use the coverage tracking to report to our Exec Board in terms of media coverage numbers and create monthly coverage reports so that does not need to be done manually.

*This review was written before Cision acquired TrendKite. TrendKite is now part of Cision Communications Cloud.
  • Interactive reporting - great to have reports that are interactive and link to articles
  • Ease of breaking down coverage per topic, especially handy if you are a research organisation or advocacy and you want to see how well you do on certain missions
  • Cision has a great interactive dashboard where you can have everything you need to know one page - including readership, articles with highest readership etc
  • Customer service during GMT hours (although I think that is coming)
  • Find an easier way to star top content for reporting
  • Does not always pick up all the broadcast clips - sometimes not in full
Very good product to use for reporting and coverage tracking based on specific topics, very easy to create reports and look at specific timings and or topics for coverage - good to track advocacy messaging and research reports
Tv and radio clips not always picked up - coverage is more English language focused, so if you need a lot tracked in other languages I am not sure how it will compare

Gorkana was a great alternative to Cision due to the red button and updated information. We used it to update and maintain media lists as well as reporter moves.

  • Red button-- allows us to send inquiries with immediate responses
  • Red button was not as efficient as when we first started with the database

Our company uses Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* to track media publications. It is department specific - specifically marketing and public relations. It assists us with tracking our story sell through and to measure the SEO impact of media partners.

  • Customer service is incredible. Knowledgeable and friendly.
  • Pulling reports. Easy to manipulate data to use for reporting. Straightforward to compare date ranges as well.

We use Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* to track media hits and share of voice. Also, we create reports that also track readership, search engine optimization, etc. We give the reports to the assistant vice president and senior vice president to track our progress and evaluate our efforts. Currently, we use Cision for our department, but we are strongly encouraging university communications and other departments to drop Meltwater and purchase Cision Communications Cloud. In public relations, it sometimes gets tricky to track project success. But, Cision makes it easy to see if our efforts and strategic plans are panning out.

  • Cision allows us to track how hot a research topic is from week-to-week or month-to-month.
  • I love that I can create annual reports and compare our efforts from one year to the next.
  • The aggregated readership numbers are way to large! There is no way we have a billion readers!
  • The sentiment measurement is useless. It never gets it right.
  • We sometimes get random hits in our searches. So, the searches have to be very concise.
Cision Communications Cloud is great for tracking public relations efforts. It is fantastic in evaluating the usefulness of the strategic plan, if we are meeting our goals and objectives, and if our tactics are working.

Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* is being used by our PR team both in North America and internationally to track how effective our press releases and responses to media queries are in furthering our brand's exposure. We also use the platform's benchmarking function to compare how our share of voice ranks against our competitors. While we use it internally, we've shared plenty of these insights with our whole company.
  • Interactive reporting - This is the single best feature of Cision Communications Cloud, as it has allowed us to communicate our PR efforts with our broader team and show how much our company is mentioned in the media.
  • Competitor analysis - Being able to see how our efforts are not only generating great exposure for our company, but seeing how these efforts have set us aside from the competition has been incredibly valuable in showing us that our efforts are working.
  • Support - The team always responds very quickly and handles all queries very quickly. They are incredibly understanding with any issues that come up, and handle things very creatively and are extremely polite.
  • Generating reports - this is one area where the process could be simplified. While the output is great, there are quite a few steps to get there which are easy to forget, so hopefully this is something that can be streamlined a bit more in the near future.
  • It would be great if there was some sort of function to see "trending topics" - it's likely hard to do that by keywords since so many articles will have a lot of crossover and not be about the same topic in the end, but that could be a really helpful insight down the road.
I would say it's extremely well suited for both a large company and a small company. It tracks global mentions and it's easy to see where coverage is being generated, but for a smaller brand I could see it being very helpful for tracking how well PR efforts are at driving local coverage.
