Infinitely more flexible than Mediaplus/Kantar - no ability to make quick changes to searches. In most cases changes would take days or weeks. No ability to do historical searches. With regard to Meltwater, Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* is much more intuitive, easier to use and has better report generation.

We selected Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* when it was in its relative infancy for two main reasons. Its interface was far easier to manage and refine relative to its competitors, allowing us to get the most relevant results from our tracking and monitoring. And its customer service was best-in-class by a wide margin. The Cision (TrendKite)* team was always open to suggestions and improvements and finding ways to make their platform more appropriate for our daily use, while the competitors were more interested how we would adjust our workflow to fit within their space.

These other vendors are honestly terrible, based on my interactions with the platforms from 2014-2016, when we were in more of a "test" phase and hopping around from vendor to vendor. In almost all cases:

  • their media monitoring is not accurate
  • the platforms are not user friendly and require calling customer service in order to make even the most minor of changes
  • the reps are either unavailable (directing us instead to the general hotline) or have bad attitudes, particularly in the case of Cision (pre-TrendKite acquisition)
  • they may offer media monitoring, analytics capabilities, OR a reporter directory, but not all three
  • sales team is overly pushy and constantly leaves spam calls, voicemails and emails -- including tactics that they think are clever (i.e., sounding vague enough to potentially be a serious call and not a sales call) but are actually extremely annoying and not fooling anyone

I've been disappointed with how slow iSentia Mediaportal has been in modernising its platform. While I used it regularly a number of years ago for a different in-house PR position, my overriding impression was that it was struggling to shift its focus from traditional media (print, radio, TV) and into the realms of online. Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* beats it hands down here, with greater and more digital-focussed functionality to boot.

Meltwater has improved significantly over the last few years and was the other main contender for our custom when we last renewed our contract. One of the things that helped tip Cision Communications Cloud over the edge was its inclusions for the price. While Meltwater could offer most of what Cision did, and in a slightly better UI to boot, the full functionality would be almost double the price.

For media measurement, Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* was a much easier to use product that had more features that would help us evaluate the value of PR. Also, the data is presented in a much more visually interesting way that works well for presenting to other teams. It might have slightly fewer total outlets but all of our relevant coverage has been captured and it rarely misses anything.

AirPR is more advanced in terms of tracking audience action based on coverage, but Cision Communications Cloud* is more intuitive and user friendly.

I was not involved in that decision, but I would select it mainly because of the accuracy and its user friendly platform that allows big organisations to be aligned when it comes to reporting. Always with the guarantee of precise tracking performance. This is definitely key for a successful strategy and great alignment.

Cision Communications Cloud is much more comprehensive and provides detailed reports like competitor performance that Meltwater lacks or doesn't make easy to use/ Cision is much more user friendly.

Cision's dashboards, reporting, and breadth of capabilities stood out to us, plus the competitive pricing and high level of customer support.

Cision (pre-TrendKite acquisition) and Meltwater. Meltwater's service is absolutely abysmal. They write all their contracts in a way that they auto-renew unless you provide 4 months notice (something roughly like that - it's more than the typical 30 or 60 days notice). The reporting on both is vastly inferior and nowhere near as visual. Even in areas where they used to own the market - in reporter contacts etc., - they've lost out to Cision (TrendKite)* with their Pinpoint Contacts product.

Meltwater looks good at first if you know how to construct the query, but when I used it this was the weakest point. A bad query resulted in meaningless reports that were deceptive and did not disclose the real market impact I was having. Support was terrible, and access to the tool was limited by password access for only one person in the organization.

Meltwater offers a good product at a competitive price and our preference for Cision (TrendKite)* was subjective in some ways. When it came down to which screen someone would want to stare at for a few hours every week for a year, or during a communications crisis, we picked the offering with the better information design. The products from both companies are worth a long look from anyone shopping for public relations analytics.

  • Cision PR Software
Cision (TrendKite)* is the leader in their field. While Cision (pre-TrendKite acquisition) has worked to catch up to their analytics ability, Cision (now with TrendKite) was the breakthrough company in PR Analytics. They are easy to use, relatively inexpensive, and constantly expanding into new fields of coverage.

We all like its ease of use and focus on media coverage over all the other platforms. I hate how some platforms try to stack social data on top of media as if they're the same thing. Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* tells you how many times articles were shared on social, but doesn't try to equate an article with a Tweet. Meltwater is still better for international coverage but no one likes using that platform after they've used Cision Communications Cloud.

I did a demo of Meltwater, but found that the overall look and feel of Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* was better. The reporting was more full-featured and the overall demo/sales experience was superior. Meltwater was an impressive service, I just liked Cision a little better.

We looked into 10 different options and narrowed down based on price and fit. Critical Mention, Meltwater, and Cision (TrendKite)* were our final 3 options. Critical Mention was out after that because their price was identical to Meltwater and Cision, but we did not get a dashboard of information with Critical Mention. At the end of the day, the user-friendly ability of Cision's platform, their ability to exclude articles from our report (articles that were picked up in very very very small news outlets and that were in foreign languages), and the friendly experience we had throughout the process is why we chose Cision Communications Cloud.
