Cision PR Software is well suited for anyone who routinely researches media contacts or builds lists. The notes are useful in that they provide context for the reporter and how they preferred to be contacted, as well as their career history.

It is very well suited for finding media contacts and sending media blasts. They have an extensive list of journalists, and the amount of contact information for each is vast. The media blasts do a good job of finding their destination as well. Very few issues with spam folders. It's less appropriate for herding cats, because it's just an online media service.

Cision PR is great for sending out press releases and keeping record of who you contact for what. It also allows you to keep record of activities outside of the software, like phone calls, emails and face-to-face encounters.

If you have a solid PR program you are running, and the budget money you allocate towards the software provides adequate return for your execution and tracking needs; this is great software. It is definitely one of the leading PR software programs out there, especially since they acquired their main competitor, Vocus.

For those who have limited PR budget dollars, I'd recommend shopping for a program that has a few less "bells and whistles," depending on what you need to use it for. Another option, if you are a bigger company is to look for another division in your company to split the cost and get added seats. Or if you are a smaller firm, see if you can find another small company to go in with you to purchase the annual subscription. Lots of ways to approach this.

Questions to ask:

  • How do the four tabs work? (Plan, Connect, Monitor, Analyze)
  • Can you show us a demo?

Well suited if ...
  • You have large volumes of coverage
  • Have clear competitors to track
  • Want better insight into SOV
  • Want better insight into key message penetration
  • Need better reporting and charts
Not well suited if...
  • Google alerts are good enough
  • Don't have budget for measurement
  • You have a very common name (thankfully we aren't tracking Apple or Tide or other major brands with common names!)

Cision is great for distributing press releases and other news announcements. It is also great for compiling information about specific journalists or publications, which can come in handy when pitching or deciding the best publications in which clients should advertise. It's also great for organizing publications into groups, whether by industry, client, geography, etc.

Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite) is most appropriate at seeing the digital coverage of our brand and products, specifically through searches that can be turned into reporting on the topic or segment. Competitive evaluations can also be made by running a similar search with the competitor brand and product. These can be shared and exported for media event recaps that are necessary for our executive management and for evaluating the budgetary allocation for future events. It is very good at tracking key influencers, especially those active with social media. However, it is lacking in some business intelligence tools, specifically for identifying areas or segments for which we are not the strongest brand.

I believe Cision Communication Cloud (Trendkite)* is the ultimate dashboard in the PR field. By using Cision, you can get a clear picture of how your client's PR coverage is faring — and share this with them. All the key metrics are there - reach, quantitative coverage, favorability, performance over time. The best thing about it is that you can easily create PDF reports or interactive links. I have not seen a competitor make high quality, attractive reporting so easy.

Cision is not a pitching or contact tool, so it would not be appropriate for firms seeking a way to reach out to the media and ascertain contacts. But frankly, most PR firms have this in place anyway. Also, Cision does not measure traditional social media - only social media relating to PR. But this is a plus - because most PR firms want to focus on traditional PR and not become social media managers.

We use Cision Communications Cloud (TrendKite)* for a specific use on topic searching and it is designed to monitor specific corporate messaging. It is reasonably suited for what we do, but it is hard to capture what is being said over social media with the shares. Relying on it for sentiment is not a good use of the tool.

We love Cision (Trendkite) and we do recommend it to clients that want to purchase a service like this. We use it to add graphic detail to our monthly reports and I share it with senior executives for their leadership team meetings. The accuracy of the reporting is very good and the research capability is a big help too.

I appreciate the dashboard and the ability to present these to my senior management. It is not well suited to a lot of specialization out of the gate, for example specialty media. That said, staff is always happy to add it.

If you're looking to track media coverage, but don't have a huge budget for a tool, this might be for you. There's manual work that goes into it. It pulls mentions that are not only media, but their support team can always help you improve the quality of the information. If you constantly work on your dashboards and keep an eye on those, every time you have to do a report it will be simpler. The reports that the tool creates are beautiful and interactive, and you can customize and add notes.
If you want to track media coverage for clients that get a lot of coverage, this tool is not for you. It will be too difficult to identify those hits that are strictly from media to those that are just junk. Excluding financial news can be tricky, even though they have a filter for it, it doesn't always work.

I think everyone in the marketing/PR business should be using something like Cision. It's a way to stay on top of how your brand is being perceived and to track when you are in the media. It allows you to address issues and change strategy if necessary. We also use it to track how our events are doing and most importantly, we use it to show sponsors how we are doing in regards to visibility of our brand and theirs in conjunction with ours.

Cision Communications Cloud is great for creating visually appealing reports to share with those who are interested in viewing the metrics side of PR. It's not as great for day to day monitoring of coverage.

Well Suited
- Crisis monitoring (real-time media monitoring)
- Promotional reach - seeing how impactful our various marketing, PR, and promotions campaigns are
- Quarterly reporting on major news events
Not Well Suited
- Daily news monitoring - it is much simpler and a more easy experience for our team to build daily news reports by searching through Google News than it is to use Cision Communications Cloud for daily collection of all of our news mentions.

Very well suited for identifying coverage based on key messages or share of voice with other competitors. Also very easy to back search for three years where other platforms only enable you to search 6 months - 1 year. I've only been using this platform for less than 6 months and I can't easily identify a scenario where it's not appropriate.
