I'm working for a Citrix Platinum Solution Advisor (CSA) and Citrix Service Provider (CSP). We have used and resold Citrix Solutions for a long time (20 years+) and have deployed it within many customers' infrastructures. Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops is used to publish and secure virtual desktop or server-based sessions to local and remote users, with advanced functionality like rich graphics and audio, and great user environment personalization.
  • Best performance on low bandwith or big latency.
  • Great user experience
  • Use it on any device, anywhere
  • Easy management
  • Secure platform
  • Licensing is complex, no more option to buy license (only subscriptions).
  • Citrix should stop renaming every product and suites regularly.
  • More fair pricing (solutions can be very expensive).
Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops is best in class for offering a great user experience in VDI, server-based sessions, or published apps. Using additional GPU allows uses like rich video, 3D apps, and great modern uses (MS Teams, Office 365, Zoom, etc.). Citrix products are very well integrated (Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops used with Citrix ADC is the best way to secure access and monitor everything).

The company has implemented Citrix Virtual Apps in order to guarantee remote access to selected software all over the group. The architecture is designed with a central server in the headquarter and remote apps distributed to the employees. The advantage of Citrix Virtual Apps is that every user receives only the apps that can use in coherence with his business role. During COVID-19 lockdown, the company has been ready in order to guarantee access for all the employees and the business continuity.
  • fast
  • easy to use (from end user perspective)
  • customization respect to business role
  • possibility to restart the single app
  • internal chat
  • embed collaboration
Well suited scenarios of use: 1) BI (Board) and consolidation (Talentia) software installed on headquarters' server and access distributed to controlled companies all around the world: no installation required into sister companies (located in 9 different countries) and a controlled environment where the company can access 2) SAP B1 is installed on every sister company (locally) and access is granted to headquarters controllers and administrative employees without direct server access Less appropriate: 1) no access to a specific server and no possibility to monitor system performance when a solution is released. 2) strong dependency on IT intervention that creates inefficiency and "internal war" in the case of data analyst or hybrid controller (i.e. Board developer) that have the needs of freedom in terms of access.

Used as an alternative to normal VPN clients. Allows access to apps such as Excel if the local computer does not have it. Good to use if the local computer has bandwidth issues or crashes since the app runs in a cloud-hosted system. Also useful for Mac users if the program is only available for PC. Certainly, something to consider if a large variety of computers accessing systems such as a BYOD environment or one with many contractors.
  • Excel
  • Edge
  • Chrome
  • Area to request access from Admin for certain programs, rather than separate portal.
Of course, requires an active internet connection. This is good for traveling users, for example, at an airport with intermittent connection. Alternative of not using Citrix desktop, but regular VPN, local Excel file, for example, could become corrupted or have sync issues. Allow user to continue to Excel session upon reconnection. However, does not allow offline use such as on airplanes without internet.

I use Citrix desktop for more than 7 years now, from previous company adopted all user PC using Citrix desktop to manage backend IT perspective to now in my current company use it as some of the application + a few virtual desktops for someone who needs to get in the network with their own computer, Citrix has been trouble free easy to use solution for us.
  • Mobility, any where, any computer
  • easy to use
  • not much computer resource required
  • file sharing from local PC to the citrix laptop or application
  • better mobile app, for iPad users
  • Audio and Video optimization can improve
for companies mixed with both PC and Mac environments, Citrix is the solution for running PC only environment. Saving on the laptop renewal cost, time to spinning up a new laptop takes no time. so for a company that doesn't have much IT support or ongoing cost, it's a great option for designer company need to provide heavy duty PC to users, Citrix laptop not that great.

Citrix Virtual Apps helped us limit our costs significantly as we could now access remote devices and applications including managing the security of the devices remotely. It offered secure access to us. We did not have to build a data center of our own. Everything was on the cloud. It was very convenient and required minimum maintenance on our part. Rather than having a big network team and having to purchase various servers ourselves, We relied on Citrix Virtual Apps that provide us remote desktop access to various applications and servers. Thus it cut down on our infrastructure costs significantly while delivering efficient service as downtime was minimal.
  • Remote Desktop Connectivity which is secure.
  • We were able to manage everything centrally without having to update each system individually.
  • Quick security updates and patches are provided to Central Point regularly. Hence makes it very secure against any new threats.
  • It is very cost-effective as compared to building your own network and in-house network team to maintain the same.
  • It allows you access to your applications and servers on the move. Allows Mobility
  • Complex architecture and licensing structure
  • expensive setup and ongoing costs in comparison to its peers.
  • Becomes slow sometimes and you face network issues because of various interlinked dependencies.
I feel if you are starting to use a Remote Desktop connection, Citrix Virtual Apps is a good option. It will help you understand the basics and give you a perspective and great experience to handle these applications. However, when you understand and get experience on the same, you sometimes feel the need to try other peer applications for better performance and to avoid any network issues if any. As Citrix Virtual Apps tend to be a bit slow and are liable to some performance issues over a period of time.

In our company, we need Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops as a must since a lot of users work remotely and with this great tool, they are able to log in remotely to their desktops and other applications too. Since our company grew fast in the last years we needed such tool to go ahead with our growth. The connection is secure and this was one of the requirements for the software purchase.
  • Give employees freedom to work from anywhere.
  • Management of VMs easy and reduces costs.
  • Versatile
  • Best performance and stability.
  • Linux installation.
  • Support cases some time take long time to solve.
  • Ideal for large companies.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops are ideal for large companies and I don't think are worth it for small companies. This software helped us in IT to focus more on a pool of apps installed in Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops and not on individual users' issues. Allowed a lot of users to work outside the office as they were in the office.

We use Citrix as our preferred VDI solution to provide managed desktop to end users. With CItrix you get a complete siolution from Citrix gateways to the Application publishing which makes it easier to manage rather than having seperate thirdpary products, which can be quite challenging to manage and update from time to time.
  • Virtual Apps
  • VDI Solution
  • Printing
  • A single console to manage the environment.
  • The configuration is a bit complicated and we have hired Citrix administrators. But it's a good solution.
  • User profiles need improvement. They could use more stability and more functionality as well as user profile redirection.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops are secure and way better than using built-in Microsoft terminal services. I have used other products as well like VMware Horizon View and Hyper-V to provide VDI solutions to the end-user but they lack one thing or the other, whereas Citrix Apps and Desktops solutions cover almost everything as a complete VDI solution.

I used Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops at my previous company for remote work, or telecommuting when not going into the office in person. It addresses the problem of not having to commute to the office. Users of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops are able to access nearly everything they would be able to if they were in the office as long as they have access to the internet.
  • Access to their work remotely.
  • Good customer support.
  • Easy to login to the system.
  • Better mobile app access and functionality.
  • High cost of using this service.
  • Service connection issues can lag at times.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops are well suited for those who need access to their work remotely. The interface is easy to use, and you can log in quickly and easily. The desktop features are great and their customer service is helpful when you need it. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops is less appropriate when the system can lag due to connectivity issues such as slow internet.

We are using it for connecting to business applications, utilities and production servers. It is releasing the user from installation and maintenance of business applications. From security point of view, it allows to centralize the access to production applications so the management of access/open ports become an easier task. From help desk point of view, the support of the applications become also an easier task since there are no more various of "local issues" To summarize, when you are using Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops for connecting to business applications and servers, you are getting a smooth feel like you are working on local app that someone is always maintaining.
  • Maintaining centralize access to all business applications without the need to worry of firewall/proxy configuration.
  • You are getting the feeling of working on local application without the need to install/configure/maintaining the applications
  • Access to production servers without the need to move between several remote desktop hops.
  • In my experience, file sharing is not working well, when you need to copy or access files from your local to Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, it is performing very bad
  • Maybe add support for managing the applications in a folder structure to make it easier to find your application.
  • It is working like a sandbox but with it, installation of apps on the Citrix desktop not always act like installation of apps on local machine.
It is working quite well on allowing access to many business applications from one point of access. In my experience, it is not working well where you need to move files form your local machine into Citrix and vise versa. Installation of new applications (as a user) inside the Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops is not always smooth and cause problems due to the sandbox nature.

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops allow both desktop and applications virtualization and centralize management. We use Citrix to run legacy applications and cut down on support cost.
  • Centralize management of application and desktop
  • Offline ability
  • Low bandwidth connection
  • Setup of server farm is complex
  • Cost
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops is well suited for company that wants to cut down on cost of supporting remote users. Having the ability to create an image of desktop and applications to deployment company-wide and centralize patching and upgrading. All users get the same look and feel when they connect to the system make supporting the users easier.

We use Citrix Virtual Apps as the hub for all online operations. It is our gateway to access all of our software, data, user applications, and shared drives. We rely heavily on Citrix Virtual Apps for our day-to-day work, as without it, we are unable to process much of anything through the course of the day.
  • Gateway to all software, data, etc.
  • Smooth transition on desktop or laptop
  • user friendly
  • help online could be enhanced
It is well suited when you have a lot of different applications that you need to log into each day. It acts as a gateway to access all of the items you need to use, with one click of the mouse. I have always been pleased with the operation of Citrix Virtual Apps.

We use XenDesktop as a global solution for our company's users to access resources in several different regions. It allows our users to work closer to where their applications and data are opposed to trying to access those resources directly from their endpoint device.
  • Flexibility to find the best configuration for your company's needs.
  • Good options/tools for managing the environment.
  • Suite of products that support XenDesktop like Storefront and NetScaler.
  • Well established company in Citrix that has been developing this technology for over 20 years.
  • While you can present multiple global sites in one pane of glass to users, from an administrative standpoint they must be managed separately.
  • XenDesktop is more complex than previous Citrix products (XenApp).
XenDesktop is well suited for reducing latency. When you have applications and data in one location and have users in another this is one of the best products for improving their experience. It's also useful for creating a security boundary around your apps and data. You can secure it at a network level then require your users to connect to the XenDesktop environment to access that information.

I have used Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Xenapp) in my organization to work remotely as a virtual office. It comes out to be an effective tool for a virtual office. You don't even require a hardware computer at your office seat desk to work remotely from home, You can directly use Citrix Virtual App to work using various different organizational tools, softwares, programs, etc,
  • using modeling software like smart plant 3D on Citrix Virtual App
  • using virtual desktop on Citrix Virtual App
  • using remote connection via Citrix Virtual App
  • sometimes you don see the application you want to use, it gets hidden automatically. Then, we need to take the help of IT.
  • It should tell if the network connectivity is proper or not instead of clashing frequently without popping out any information
I have rated Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp) 9/10 for a recommendation because there is still scope for improvement. Although, it is quite useful for someone who wants to work remotely without going to the office. It can be used from the office as well depending upon the type of usage. I have personally used it as a tool for working from home.

Citrix Virtual Apps is currently used globally, In the United States, England, France, Germany, Japan, India, Australia, and China. Citrix Virtual Apps provides secure remote access for contractors and consultants who need to work in remote environments. It has alleviated the need for access globally and provides access for users outside of the local regions. We have been able to provide secure access to desktops, and applications regardless of the proximity of their location. We have been using the product for the past ten years and with the Covid-19 pandemic, also provided a means for additional users to work securely from home. Today we have Citrix environments in the cloud as well as on-premise datacenters. We have migrated away from using VPN because Citrix Virtual Apps is more scalable and configurable.
  • Provides access to an entire computer desktop session.
  • Provides access to single published applications.
  • Configurable to provide read only access to a desktop or application.
  • Allows for apply Citrix and AD group policies for secure and enhanced access.
  • More built in reporting from Citrix Director.
  • Easier to manage and upgrade Virtual Delivery Agents.
  • Enhance the Citrix Gateway interface on the NetScaler.
  • Make it easier to customize the Citrix Gateway UI dashboard.
Citrix Virtual Apps is well suited for environments that require remote access with 25 or more users. It is not appropriate for small sites with 10 or fewer users due to the cost of ownership. Citrix Virtual Apps pricing plus Windows RDS licensing as well is required. Smaller organizations may not find the cost-benefit due to overall costs and/or the cost of managing the environment.

We've used Citrix Desktop since moving from microsoft terminal services 14 years ago. It's been a relatively solid and secure platform to allow the firm's attorneys to access all systems and network as long as they have an internet connection. We've upgraded over the years and are currently looking at a new build. Administration is not bad but the skill set needed to install and configure is above my knowledge level. My most common end user complaint is from the people that save the world on their desktop; I do not sync with their office machines due to potential software licensing issues.
  • Secure - several layers
  • Ease of use - just log in to the web portal
  • Great support when I do have an issue
  • I wanted to expand use for the COVID quarantine and work from home directive, but Citrix refused to allow temporary or short term licenses
  • Licenses are very expensive
  • Implementation and configuration does require a high end skill set
Works great for general user access. All the familar and approved applications are available. I rarely have all of my licenses in use but last March for 8 months - it became normal. No performance issues at all.
For those people with customize applications, tons of unsupported and not backed up data on their local drives (and a few audiophiles that I don't support high end audio) aren't happy they don't have a seamless experience. We have looked at using VDI but as the majority of employees are not mobile it isn't cost effective to change the entire remote access desktop to accomodate 3 users out of 20. We do have an issue with profile bloat; on the planned upgrade later this year that will be addressed as one of the primary configuration items to address.

Citrix Virtual Apps & Desktops is a great program management tool and is widely adopted across my 25k+ employee company. We use the tool for many reasons. It really solves the problem of being able to access your desktop and applications remotely, as well as organizing programs in a safe and secure manner. It has a very user-friendly interface and logging on is very seamless. In the last year of working completely remote there has only been 1 or 2 issues in accessing the portal and they are normally corrected immediately.
  • accessing your work computer on the go
  • ease of logging on
  • high adoption across multiple users
  • bookmarking the landing page could be easier
  • better mobile app
  • quicker log on speeds

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops is great when in the office and needing to switch work stations and wanting to hop from one computer to another or one conference room to the next so that we can pick up where we left off and being able to access all your files. The tool has also great when working from home as there is a seamless integration between my workstation in my office and my laptop at home. Citrix has been so great that there is virtually no difference between my machines in the office or at my home, making me want to never leave!

Usage of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) is across the organization. Our call center agents leverage virtual desktops to complete their role with our customers and many internal teams leverage the flexibility for testing and general remote access for themselves and vendors/consultants as we are allowed to secure the workspace across a number of boundaries to ensure a strong posture while delivering a good user experience.
  • Enables remote access anywhere, to any device which eliminates managing the endpoints how traditional VPN would require.
  • Integrates well with modern applications to offer optimized user experiences similar to native applications which increases user acceptance.
  • Extremely flexible in how policies are applied to different use cases to ensure the appropriate security mitigations are in place with minimal effort.
  • Easy to maintain and expand environments to fit business needs.
  • There isn't much automation built-in beyond Machine Creation Services, so you must develop a lot of your own code - though their PowerShell module is excellent.
  • General monitoring is decent and has the ability to send email alerts, but the scope is very limited to mostly user experience components or requires the most expensive license level to get some additional support - though that also requires other software to be owned.
  • Allowing more customizations to the "Director" support web tool would really allow for ease of use by management and help desk users in ways that simplify there workflows.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (CVAD) is well suited for any internal workspace or remote access environment where flexibility and reliability is of interest. Whether you need to delivery a bunch of similar desktops or an application for a training session or fully empower a team or department to work remotely while maintaining the highest security mitigations the platform will allow you to deploy workspaces as you need, and wherever you desire with the hypervisor or cloud of your choosing.

I myself do not use it without our own organization, but we do use and manage it for a lot of our customers.
It's used to have a centralized environment and it helps people to work from home with ease, which is great in these times of Covid-19. Also, using a provisioning method to update images keeps the pollution of VDAs to a minimum.
  • You can login from anywhere you have an internet connection.
  • You have a fast virtual desktop without the user having a fast desktop.
  • It's easy to manage from a support perspective.
  • Profiles that are as easy to configure and managed as FSLogix.
  • We use WEM as a workspace environment manager but it could still learn a lot from products like Ivanti Workspace Control.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops is great when you have an environment where you still have a lot of on-premise applications or when you need to give users a strong performing desktop from wherever. But the need for this product is less when you have a lot of web applications or SaaS applications because they don't need a lot to perform well.

We use Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) to deliver virtual apps and desktops to our whole organization. We have a subset of employees who work entirely remotely from our corporate office, and they use the system for all access to our on-premise apps. We have another subset of employees who work at the Corporate office, and they use Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) to access a few apps that are only available via virtual access as well as remote access when away from the office. It solves a lot of business issues, including letting us share Apps to older machines, centralizing applications for better management, and allowing users to have common desktops regardless of what device they are using to access our apps.
  • Using Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) allows you to do a one to many deployments with apps. Whether you stream them to desktops or host them via web protocols, you can install it once and allow many to use.
  • If you want to minimize IT resources, you can use this program to produce virtual desktops that can be static or allow users to change as needed. There is no need to go to each desk to fix issues with their desktops when they are all centralized and managed via Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop).
  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) has a great protocol (HDX) that minimizes bandwidth needs allowing you to use Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) to offices or devices with slower internet connections.
  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) has a great management interface that allows granular control over all your apps and desktops.
  • Users can bring their own device, whether a mobile or PC type.
  • Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops Formerly XenDesktop) does have a bit of a learning curve and can get complex at times.
  • Pricing on the system can be a little steep for large deployments considering it is an add on to MS Terminal Services/RDS.
  • An issue that is probably not Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) specific, but since these are virtual apps if used on a connection that has high latency or frequent internet drops users can become frustrated. Unlike true web services, users do require a solid internet connection. Slow is ok; latency is not.
In most cases, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) is most suited for larger deployments and shops that have dedicated IT Staff. Trying to use it with just on and off MSP support can be a little questionable as the system does need daily babysitting as to dealing with users who get stuck, profile issues, and just general user education. Also, it is not optimal for situations where a lot of the apps are high-end graphic intensive as this not only requires more memory and processing power but usually GPU's for video as well. But for shops that want to make their more common apps or MS Office type stuff available in a virtual environment, this is the best at doing it.

We use this Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops for our remote workforce and work from home staff. All departments use Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops however some are not fully able to utilize it due to their roles. It is worth mentioning that we also use Citrix ADC to facilitate secure remote access to our Citrix environment.
  • It has a really good end-user experience when using desktop features.
  • It's easy to use Citrix Storefront.
  • Optimization for audio and video is not the best.
  • Logging is very weak and makes it hard to troubleshoot issues.
Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops are well suited for remote access when paired with Citrix ADC as the gateway. It is great for when there are limited resources and applications and desktops need to be shared with many users. It is a very good VDI environment and works with VMware vCenter and ESXi very well. Without Citrix ADC it is very difficult to set up an ICA proxy for remote sessions. If you are planning on using Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops for remote access you either need Citrix ADC or VPN to keep it secure.

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops is used in conjunction with our document management application to centralize data for our nationwide (worldwide) insurance division.
  • Centralize data.
  • Ease of user desktop management.
  • Standardization of desktops.
  • It's not cheap to operate.
  • Complex, there are a lot of moving parts, so it takes some dedication to set up and manage.
  • The constant changing of names is annoying (i.e., Virtual Apps and Desktops—formerly XenDesktop).
The centralization of company data and standardization of user desktops is the primary reason we use Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. This helps both the end-users (all data is in a single location rather than a unique share on a unique server for each office) as well as IT management (all users share the same desktop and settings. One location to change all desktops).

  • Ease of use for new and existing users
  • Simple user interface
  • Can run a little slow depending on the applications

Citrix XenDesktop is utilized at our Datacenter to provide our third-party offshore developers access to internal company resources while maintaining a good security standing. XenDesktop prevents customer data and/or proprietary code from being downloaded external to the company and leaked to competitors or our customer's competitors.
  • All Management resources can now be installed on a single server. Reducing the overhead required to maintain a citrix environment.
  • Granularity of the Delivery groups allow you to define allowing a remote user to connect to a random XenDesktop VM or individually assigning VMs to users.
  • HDX RealTime Optimization Pack has stabilized some of the issues of utilizing all of the features of Skype for Business in a ZenDesktop VM.
  • Product documentation is bloated with information and lacks documentation on assisting with first time setup.
  • Customer service offers very little assistance when it comes to using your support contract.
  • Default Policy, out of the box, allows Clipboard, File Share, Printer Sharing, Drive redirection, and others security risks that should be disabled by default.
  • Screenshots are not prevented, other products blank a screenshot or sniping tool image. Watermarks are the only security citrix offers and are disabled by default.
  • Renewal cost of support contract is 80% of initial purchase price. Other companies renewal cost is significantly less.
  • End users who do not properly log off can leave a hung connection, and requires manual deletion of the connection for users to re-connect.
Citrix XenDesktop is useful when your company utilizes third party offshore developers that need to access internal resources with restrictions. And useful when you need to provide contractor or support technician temporary access to resolve an issue.

It can prevent customer data and/or proprietary code from the unsanctioned removal of company premise.
External auditors have been quicker to approve (and sometimes mandate) the use of Citrix as a trusted tool for external access.

We use XenDesktop across the organization to bring high performance to an application whose client would otherwise operate far too slowly across the WAN link from our central data center. The management of the solution is the biggest reason we continue to use it because it requires low effort to maintain and the support is very good.
  • Management of the entire solution is central and intuitive.
  • Printing is simple and easy to manage.
  • Deploying the client and updating it are a challenge at times.
Xendesktop makes the most sense in larger environments where multiple servers are needed to support the end users.

XenApp is being used at the Cranston location. We use XenApp to connect to our ERP system SAP.
  • Good tech support.
  • Install/upgrade process is easy to follow.
  • Citrix Studio is excellent for managing everything from machine catalogs, licensing, controller, etc... one stop shop.
  • Policies are sometimes too confusing to understand.
  • I would like to be able to clean up user profiles form Citrix Studio.
  • Add printer setup and configuration to Citrix Studio.
XenApp is well suited for any organization who wants to manage client access to business applications in a controlled environment.
