We have 15 local users and 35 remote users. I set up a parent and two sub organizations. The subs were set not to inherit the parent settings so I could control who could make changes to the settings. The remote users are locked down so we can be compliant with regulations about data archiving and retention. Remote users can not delete from backups and backups are set for unlimited retention. The backup is set to run continuously. The only issue we have had was with a user that has a satellite internet connection with limited or capped data. The first backup used most of her data allotment for the month. Users had to be educated to leave their computer on while the first backup was running.
  • After the install the user doesn't have to do anything. Our remote users were used to having to copy data to an external drive for archiving. Which meant it usually wasn't done. The central office didn't have access to any of those files either.
  • I am able to monitor which users are backed up and contact those that appear to be having issues.
  • Since the install package exceeded the attachment size allowed with our email client I included an HTML link to the location of the download.
  • The install took less than 10 minutes including the download of the software. Our documentation included screen shots of what the user should expect to see. This allowed remote users to install without having central IT get involved.
  • The management website times out frequently requiring a re-login.
  • Some of the information reported isn't consistent. Because each user can have multiple devices the number of devices doesn't match user number.
  • The number of users is the number of accounts that you have set up. Not the number of active users.
  • Some of the settings report inaccurately when first entering the screen. Refreshing the screen will update the settings. The help desk is aware of the problem and they are working to resolve the issue.
CrashPlan is great where you have remote or inexperienced users. It is a set and forget application. It just works.
  • We were using iDrive for the central office backup. With the amount of data we were using monthly the upgraded plan would have cost us as much as the entire install of Crashplan.
  • Getting a backup solution for our remote users was a very high priority. We paid for the dedicated engineer to help with the install. This saved a lot of time researching or hunting information for the install. It paid for itself is saved time for our IT department.
The deduplication feature and continuous backup puts this application ahead of others. The ability to prevent users from deleting files from backups is another feature that was attractive for our management and legal team. Set and forget is great. No intervention from the remote user is even better. I don't have to worry about whether they did the backup. Cost wise the application is on par with other cloud based backup [solutions]. Plus CrashPlan will keep the user from deleting files from the backups. We evaluated iDrive, Carbonite, Zipcloud, BitCasa, and SpiderOak. CrashPlan required a little more IT setup on the front end but was a better fit for our organization.

I've used CrashPlan PROe (private cloud server with standard CrashPlan client) for three years, in multiple small business settings. At my current workplace, we've been using it since November 2015, on all our workstations and servers, to provide continuous backup to a dedicated Debian Linux backup server in a separate building, equipped with a ZFS zraid array.
  • Detailed backup control from a central administrative interface.
  • Continuous backup with granular control of CPU and bandwidth use.
  • True cross-platform support for OS X, Linux and Windows.
  • Architectural flexibility, including endpoint-to-server conversion, transparent server load balancing and redundancy, and simple storage archive import and migration.
  • Trivial installation and setup for both client and server.
  • Private cloud server is no longer available in a license package which supports businesses requiring fewer than 25 licenses.
  • Public cloud option remaining to small business is not a good fit for creative businesses generating gigabytes of new content per day.
  • Web console is not compatible with desktop Safari, and has issues with mobile Safari as well.
I would recommend CrashPlan PROe for any size business. It's eminently scalable, but it's also a perfect fit for smaller businesses which generate substantial data files, and those on slower broadband connections making offsite cloud backup a poor fit. (Sadly, it is no longer an option for most small businesses—see my earlier comments about licensing.)
  • My current employer doesn't track ROI for software licenses, but I have certainly seen CrashPlan save many times its license cost in recovered data after crashes and drive corruption.

These were the default ad hoc backup systems used before we implemented CrashPlan. While each can be made somewhat reliable, depending on user habits and practices, none provide true continuous versioned backup, none allow a single administrative overview, and only Time Machine allows easy recovery of lost data by the user.

We are using CrashPlan to backup all university owned laptops. It helps us keep track of data when someone leaves the institution, but also aids in laptop data migrations. CrashPlan is being used on a number of our servers as well.
  • CrashPlan is a lightweight application that runs in the background. I don't even know that it is there.
  • Data migrations are greatly simplified using CrashPlan. In the past we used the Windows Data Migration tool and had to wait for all the data to transfer from one computer to the other via an ethernet cable. With CrashPlan, we simply initiate a restore of data on the new computer and the user is on their way.
  • For enterprise implementations, CrashPlan also has a web-based management console. This can help simplify management of users, but also can be used to initiate a restore for a user without them even needing to stop by our help desk.
  • When it comes to our servers, sometimes the CrashPlan client can cause slowness, but it usually has to do with what else the server is used for. (e.g. SQL, File Server, etc.)
  • While the management console is a great tool to have, the UI can be a little cumbersome. Links to information are not always obvious.
CrashPlan is well suited for standard backup and data migration. Some of their more recent tools, like legal holds and endpoint detection, have promise to be useful tools.
  • With CrashPlan, the user is able to initiate restores on their own, with little to no help from IT staff. The client UI is quite easy to use, especially with their new client with release 5.1.
  • CrashPlan has freed up time for both end users and IT staff with it's simplicity and seamless backup.
  • The capability for a hybrid approach is useful when a large restore is needed quickly. You can have both on-site and cloud backup destinations.
CrashPlan is far superior to both Metiix and Backup Exec in simplicity of use and management. They are continually releasing updates and new products, where Metiix has not released a new client in 3 years since we left them.
