I think costs are at very good level if we compare Commvault Complete Data Protection with EMC running Data Domains, howewer de duplication rates are a liitle bit lower on Commvault Complete Data Protection vs Data Domain. On VMware backup Veem rules, but Commvault Complete Data Protection it's capable to do them all with ease (VM Backup, DataBase Backup, Cloud backup, etc).

Metallic was the only system that had everything that we wanted and was consistently able to show us the benefits or their organization. Rubrik had similar features but in the end, they came up short in the ability to backup all of our workloads. We also liked that Metallic was spun off of Commvault which has been a player in the game for such a long time. Rubrik still had some development to do.

  • Veritas NetBackup is an old backup program, you must make SQL configuration on the client using files.
  • Dell EMC Networker is also an old program, it can't make own deduplication and compress on a dummy disk. You must login to the client for installation and troubleshooting. It takes a very long time to fix a problem. Troubleshooting is very hard, even if you open a case to the vendor.

We chose Metallic Backup & Recovery over Backupify as we were looking for a SaaS solution to get this done. We didnt want any further hardware in our environment and we wanted something that can be accessed and used anywhere a web browser is. We also went with Metallic as it was a pretty simple tool to implement and we felt that the features that came with it were superior to Backupify.

Many other backup and recovery platforms have their strengths and weaknesses. They might specialize in backing up VMs but fail to adequately backup Oracle databases, or do well in the cloud, but not so well on-premise. In my opinion, Commvault handles the variety of clients and situations in most enterprise datacenters the best with features for efficient and effective backup policies, such as deduplication for managing storage of backups and use of hardware and software snapshots to minimize impact to production storage and compute resources.

The option for replacement started with the need to replace our old backup software. Commvault [Complete Backup & Recovery] brought us the possibility of reducing disaster recovery time, implementing a friendlier interface, a higher rate of data deduplication, the possibility of working with both tapes and other target repositories, as well as greater integration with the Netapp and VMware environment.

Not all the backup tools have the ability to backup directly to Cloud (Blobs, S3, etc.).
It can be a little controversial, but when dealing with 900TB of user data to be backed up you don't have much options.
When doing this backup to tapes, we had 2 giant Tape Libraries consuming 2 Racks in our Datacenter and it took weeks to complete.
Besides, with all the issues that Tape backups brings.
Commvault also have great interaction and integrations to most technologies (storages, virtualization, operating systems, databases, etc.).

We switched from Veritas NetBackup, because we had two parallel environments. Combining allowed us to cover more targets and make better use of centralized assets & staff. Licensing of Commvault was simpler at the time we deployed, and Commvault has continued to evolve their licensing model (for better or worse). Commvault supports unix clients better, I think, which is important to us.

About the same. Quest support is not as good. Rapid Recovery has Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery beat on email restores, but Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery is a better overall product. Rapid Recovery was better before Quest took them over. I have needed to use Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery support several times. They are very knowledgeable and helped me resolve the question I had in a timely manner.

From a feature set Commvault is the most complete of all the products. Support is also fantastic when it's needed. The ability to implement on your own kit, on an appliance based solution or even in the cloud makes it extremely flexible and it can scale as an enterprise grows so you can start small and build up as you go.

Why Commvault? Well, working with backup software in the last 25 years, I decided on Commvault, for being a safe, reliable tool with excellent technical support and was for sure the tool to cover all our needs. First we started with our physical servers and the following year we also migrated our virtual servers. Today Commvault is a must to preserve our data, independently of the source. We rely on it. We backup more than 1100 VMs and more than 150 physical servers, implementing new end storage devices to reduce our RPO/RTO, get better backup performance, split data on short and long retention periods and always knowing that our data is there for when we need it.
If I had to define in a few words after 5 years why we continue with Commvault, these would be: reliability, innovative, good local partners and with excellent technical support (something that today is not easy to provide).
Just keep on the same path!

Commvault simplified application and management. Increased recovery times by 3x and allowed us to focus on higher-value priorities and not constantly be muddling around on a daily basis to get ready for the incoming backups each night. Another advantage is knowing when a backup is successful and being able to produce a simple report that identifies if there are issues. In the past, we have had to use additional software packages to tell us if we had successful backups or not.

Commvault beats CA's Arcserve is every single area. It was a very straightforward choice for us to move from Arcserve due to reliable backup and recovery we get from Commvault. We haven't looked back at Arcserve since 2013.

Commvault is our flagship data management platform. We have a large Avamar presence but chose Commvault as our go-forward solution because of the array of features and capabilities that Commvault has that other products do not. We needed a full suite of data management tools and Commvault provided all of those tools in a single platform.

We are constantly looking at ways to save money in initial purchases, maintenance, hardware, and efforts to maintain/update our environment. Commvault continually hits high marks and keeps other vendors out of our company. The cost to move over really isn't worth the investment. However, we don't let Commvault sit on their own. We watch all the time for new opportunities and bring in vendors to review their architectures and see if they can do better than Commvault.

Since 2013, no other vendor/manufacturer has done as well as Commvault for our company. We keep looking, but no successors can match Commvault to date.

Workload options for protecting client workloads are extensive and reliable. The pedigree of the application itself is solid, been around a long time, and they've learned a lot of lessons. The support structure for when we need support or help is superior to many other vendors. Reliability of the software and the company to do what is required when required. ESP support is fantastic and I would recommend it to all. Our TAM (Technical Account Manager) is simply awesome, we treat him like one of our team.

The licensing costs for Hedvig seemed to be cost prohibitive. The Commvault HyperScale was evaluated and briefly tested and appears to be a very good approach to the remote offices we have here at DaVita across the country. HyperScale was also cost prohibitive and unfortunately wasn't utilized. The Metallic Core Backup & Recovery solution is currently being reviewed.

In the past it has been necessary to leverage multiple products to provide a complete data protection solution.
