Commvault is easier to implement and maintain. And, the skillsets required to manage Commvault at an enterprise level are more prevalent in potential hires. Making it an overall easy transition decision to make.

The Ministry’s previous backup environment was comprised of Veeam, BackupExec, and Acronis solutions, which were complex and time-consuming to manage. The team turned to IT partner Fractal Dimension to help it select and deploy a single solution that could simplify protection for its disparate environment.

After analyzing its requirements, a local partner suggested Commvault as a cost-effective, comprehensive, and flexible data management solution. They demonstrated that the Commvault solution would suit our needs and reduce ongoing management costs.

  • Veritas NetBackup is an old backup program, you must make SQL configuration on the client using files.
  • Dell EMC Networker is also an old program, it can't make own deduplication and compress on a dummy disk. You must login to the client for installation and troubleshooting. It takes a very long time to fix a problem. Troubleshooting is very hard, even if you open a case to the vendor.

IBM TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager), now Spectrum Protect, was for more complex to manage than the CommVault environment. With "Protect" each client feels like it required management rather than managing at a higher level with standardized policies. Troubleshooting and Monitoring our TSM environment was very time/labor-intensive and with Commvault it is far simpler.

  • Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam is not suited for large environment and has lot of issues when setup in large environment. It also has difficulty processing large-size data as it takes long time to merge the data with blocks required when it needs to expire the data. This is not a problem in Commvault.

Having a single console to manage all platforms such as backup and replication. Good backup window for servers and different platforms. Deduplication and compression ratio is also much better. Scheduling options and operation window options makes easier to customize the backup window or mitigate the impact on live systems from backup process.

CommVault is the best!

I selected Back Exec because CommVault replaced that in 5 of our branch offices. Backup Exec worked well enough but we were managing 5 separate tape drives and 5 different Exec programs on each server. CommVault replaced all of that, now we backup everything to a disk array in our corporate data center, make an auxiliary copy to LTO tape and another copy out to cloud storage. CommVault is probably one of the best if not the best backup program out there.

Most traditional backup and recovery tools don't offer full support for all file systems, applications, and virtual platforms. Commvault also offers the ability to replicate copies of live data in secondary locations, which was very important to our organization.

We initially compared only the two solutions, since at the time (2008) were the only two companies to provide NDMP support for NetApp (on the QVL at least). We selected CommVault since it did that and showed a superior approach to email compliance. Server backup was usually be done the same by everyone.

Hands down, CommVault exceeds the functionality of all products that we've evaluated. Few products bring together the comprehensive feature set that CommVault brings to our environment.

As there is a lack of development and focus on Networker, we were forced to adopt a new and modern solution. Commvault was chosen as it keeps up with market developments and is recognized as a strong leader by Gartner and IDC. Other products like Veaam look nice but lack a lot of features CommVault offers.

When it comes to on-prem, we only use Commvault for data protection. Anything in Azure we use Azure Backup.
The main difference is there is more data protection types supported with Commvault. Although Azure Backup supports on-prem as well, you simply get much more options and a much better backup solution using Commvault for on-prem backups.
