During the time we evaluated Backup Exec (pre 2007) the indexing engine was so complex and limited and would have to stand up 2-3 isolated stance of the indexing database just to cover our data center environment. This solution is not cost effective and complexity is through the roof. Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery was just easier to manage and the setup is pretty straight forward given that you do your homework and pre-plan your environment needing backups.

I was not part of the decision to adopt Commvault, and having developed and used many other backup/recovery tools I was a little skeptical that it could do everything that we needed, but I can say that I'm glad that they chose Commvault. It has delivered even more than we had counted on.

The support model used by other companies do not fit with the current demands of our industry. Commvault listens to their user community and engages them for change. We realized the direction of the platform we were using could not maintain the demands of where we were and where we needed to get to.

  • Veeam Backup & Replication
From my experiences, Commvault has a lot of options that I have experienced in other backup solutions before. The AI that is built into the product is a nice feature that helps us maintain our storage and ensure that backup data doesn't get out of control. Built-in ransomware protection is also a great feature that I have not seen before either.

We were previously a Networker shop. Networker advanced their technology over recent years through acquisitions of other products. This made the backup environment cumbersome to manage. Depending on components you purchased, there may be multiple consoles to manage, environment. Commvault's application is their own. The Commvault platform has been much more stable.

IBM TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager), now Spectrum Protect, was for more complex to manage than the Commvault environment. With "Protect" each client feels like it required management rather than managing at a higher level with standardized policies. Troubleshooting and Monitoring our TSM environment was very time/labor-intensive and with Commvault it is far simpler.

  • Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam is not suited for large environment and has lot of issues when setup in large environment. It also has difficulty processing large-size data as it takes long time to merge the data with blocks required when it needs to expire the data. This is not a problem in Commvault.

Having a single console to manage all platforms such as backup and replication. Good backup window for servers and different platforms. Deduplication and compression ratio is also much better. Scheduling options and operation window options makes easier to customize the backup window or mitigate the impact on live systems from backup process.

Most traditional backup and recovery tools don't offer full support for all file systems, applications, and virtual platforms. Commvault also offers the ability to replicate copies of live data in secondary locations, which was very important to our organization.

The Ministry’s previous backup environment was comprised of Veeam, BackupExec, and Acronis solutions, which were complex and time-consuming to manage. The team turned to IT partner Fractal Dimension to help it select and deploy a single solution that could simplify protection for its disparate environment. After analyzing its requirements, a local partner suggested Commvault as a cost-effective, comprehensive, and flexible data management solution. They demonstrated that the Commvault solution would suit our needs and reduce ongoing management costs.

As there is a lack of development and focus on Networker, we were forced to adopt a new and modern solution. Commvault was chosen as it keeps up with market developments and is recognized as a strong leader by Gartner and IDC. Other products like Veaam look nice but lack a lot of features Commvault offers.
