Commvault is an enterprise-level tool that we use to backup all kinds of workloads. I have implemented Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery in many Enterprise-level, Corporate banks and financial companies to mitigate their data loss and compliance with their audit requirements. I have implemented it across many platforms such as MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, AIX, Exchange, VMware, Azure, Office 365, Hyper-V, Loutas Note, Windows FS/Unix FS backups and many cloud storage and virtual environments. Commvault DR option as well. We especially used Backup replication (Dash Copy), VM Replication (Live sync) and DB replication and VM life cycling process. Customers like the Commvault CommCell console, it is a single console solution.
  • Commvault has better Duplication ratio.
  • Commvault is good at reports and audit trails. We won't miss anything which is required for our audit.
  • Support team is very responsive and provides confidence in solutions and good follow through until the problem is rectified or solved.
  • It does not have any agent for Zimbra mail backup.
  • It has to provide or should come up with supporting smaller environments.
  • I would like to keep using the java console instead of using the Command Center.
CommServe can manage backups for virtual machines via VSA without installing agents on virtual machines (non-application aware backups).

  • We used Commvault to migrate our Hyper-V VMs to VMware.
  • The backup window is less.
  • No need of another replication software for DB Replication and VM replication.
Commvault has a single console to manage all platforms such as backup and replication. It's a good backup window for servers and different platforms.
In ny experience, Support is available within 15-30 minutes.

The application is used across the whole organization that we support. It provides data protection for critical and non-critical data from a DC environment to a remote office. The tool is easy to use and offers loads of functionality from management server consolidation to media agents/clients migration without any hassles. Well documented operational documentation proves helpful when in need of references and guidance.
  • Recent major release upgrades provide tools for pre-flight checks on the management servers if the environment is fit for upgrades or requires attention or fixes prior to a successful upgrade.
  • Recently we went through a management server consolidation exercise and it worked flawlessly and the process was pretty straightforward and easy to follow.
  • Support team is very responsive and provides confidence in solutions and good follow through until the problem is rectified or solved.
  • CommServe can manage backups for virtual machines via VSA without installing agents on virtual machines (non application aware backup)
  • Does not have any migration tools if a customer is migrating from a non-CommVault backup tool to CommVault.
  • If Full backups for Virtual Machines failed on a subclient, they can only be rerun for incrementals instead of FULL backups

CommVault is an eEnterprise scale backup solution that is able to provide data protection from ROBO to Regional/Global DC. Application aware plugins provide hot backup. AuxCopy features provide a secondary level of data protection to any medium for long-term data protection.

Dedupe tools are excellent. However, there are limitations and it would not work for clients with a DB sitting on ROBO environment.

  • Recently CommVault introduces CommVault Connections where the event invites Partners, Technical experts and CV team to come together on a platform to share and ask technical questions with the intention of providing customers or technical experts a platform to share ideas or ask more operations related queries or advises
Functionality and ease of use makes it easy to deploy/adopt and makes new hires on boarding process quicker.
Agents upgrades can be managed or automated via CommServe

  • Potential backup to cloud for remote sites to do away with tape backups
  • Global view of all the combined CommServe backup health status in a single pane. Great overview tool for reporting Details includes total capacity used for backup, data storage retention by days, etc. This is a great tool for Management View!
  • There are templates for reports that can be downloaded form the CommVault store such as Disk library utilizations and etc.
  • Commvault SQL database can be customized to provide daily backup status and capacity reporting for in house reporting. This report is another consolidated report to track backup capacity per client or region for billing purpose
  • Making use of multiple Cloud Storage as disk libraries (Secondary or Thirtiary copy)
I would believe that the organization will continue to use this product as it could provide the data protection needed for now.

Confidence on the product.
I'll guess its all depends on the complexity of each backup environment and what are the limitations of this product has against newer backup technology that were build for cloud centric in mind. Some newer backup technology may have a simpler management pane but may be complex to deploy especially when you have multiple vlan to work with.
  • Implemented in-house
  • some clients were behind firewalls and this require to enable the firewall configuration on both client and CommServe so that both client and Commserve can communicate to each other.
No Comment on implementing Crownpeak Universal Consent Platform
They assisted in Server migration and multiple sessions to get the problem resolved. This is through call support and screen share sessions. End of the day the solution was completed within the projected time line.
  • Web based consoles (WebConsole, Administrator Console) are easy to navigate and supports multiple users access simultaneously. This is way better than logon locally to the CommServe server where RDP would usually limit access to limited concurrent users only.
  • Failed jobs can be configured to rerun to a specific number of times (customised)
  • CommVault documentations doesn't have any graphical snapshots and may sometimes be cumbersome to understand and may required to discover where and how to enable certain functions and or features
Yes
Although the option for mobile interface is available but we have not explore this feature and its not in the horizon to enable it as yet.

  • Backup does not fail for quite some time as it goes to pending it is difficult to identify what server does not have backup for the day. This was the negative as other products fail the next schedule or through some error.
  • Good that backup does not kill if it exceeds the window throwing error for the next schedule.
  • It is little difficult to restore data if the data is expired. If expired media mounted and tape head gets overwritten very quickly and has struggled a lot in this case.
  • Veeam Backup & Replication
Veeam is not suited for large environment and has lot of issues when setup in large environment. It also has difficulty processing large-size data as it takes long time to merge the data with blocks required when it needs to expire the data. This is not a problem in Commvault.
They are good at technical support but not quick in some cases. They have no clarity in some of the issues the team handles feature-wise. We have to run around the support engineers to get it assigned to proper team and engineer.

Our most important factor is price for the product license. If we are paying decent money and getting good features and options to protect all the type of files and application data then that is the product we want to go for.
We look for the license type and features we are getting for the money we are paying.

Plan well and make sure you collect all the required information and details before going for implementation. Organize it in step by step or break the setup into different modules to make it simple.
Yes
We always prefer to have support as it is handy in case of critical or priority issues where we are struggling to resolve the issue. We will always have option to get required information and clarification if we have any queries while upgrading the product and getting the new feature details.
No
Once we have a request where needed to restore the data which is already expired. for some reason loaded media went into the scratch tapes group and we were unable to restore the data which is very crucial for the user. We were able to get it restore after taking support from Commvault. We also made sure that what are the best practices when you are trying to restore data from the expired media.
  • Agent installation and upgrade of agent version.
  • Setting up the data protection is easy.
  • Exploring the features and options available in the commserv console.
  • Installing the server and setting up the environment is difficult as compared to the new tools.
Yes
Even though it provides mobile interface we have to set up this as it is not automated. We have not used this in our environment.
They product is built very well with all the features and support to different types of data but as an end user it is not simple to explore the server. Not easy to setup the features and make it operational as compared to the other competitor in the market.

CommVault was used by the company as our global data management platform. In simpler terms it was used as our backup solution. The IT Department was responsible for backing up all datasets and workloads for the entire organization. Due to our regulatory requirements, long term retention was required (7+ years). We were backing up approximately 50TB of data per week and retaining it for 7+ years.

CommVault allowed us to provide access to datasets for recent recoveries or for things like legal subpoenas. We used CommVault to power our disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  • CommVault has the ability to backup data sets from a broad (maybe the broadest) set of technologies. Everything from traditional agent based backups, to bare metal, and the most modern virtual machine backups.
  • CommVault has steadily evolved with an been on the forefront of the evolution of the data center from physical machine to virtual machines to software driven solutions.
  • If you need to use VTL functionality, CommVault is still one of the best.
  • Reporting tools within CommVault are very strong out of the box and do not require any additional technology to leverage.
  • Releases of CommVault are typically well tested and easy to install in place or plan migrations.
  • The management console still uses Java and often has compatibility issues. I would dump java in favor or a HTML5 web console.
  • CommVault is a huge solution capable of managing the most complex environments. It could benefit from some simplification and wizards to make it more approachable to smaller IT shops.
Well Suited: Large and complex environments with high retention and varied data sets. If VTL is desired this solution is amazing.

Less Well Suited: Highly virtualized environments who need a simple turn key solution with fast recovery times.

  • CommVault licensing was consistently on the more expensive side in the market. Other players like Veeam were always ready to come in and replace the solution at typically less than a one year license cost.
CommVault was selected years ago and had to try to fend off competitors like Veeam, Zerto, and recently Rubrik. CommVault was very stable and a proven solution both in the marketplace as a whole and at our company. This value made it hard for new players to compete for such a critical business task. CommVault has a lot of competition that was designed for the modern data center. CommVault has done an amazing job of evolving.
No
Not a simple solution to use and one with a lexicon and vocabulary you will need to be familiar with in order to use the product to its potential.

Commvault is our only enterprise data protection solution now in my organization. We use commvault to protect our physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure. [It's also used] for all our production and non-production data.
It is very easy to manage and a very robust solution for various [types of] data protection and it helped us to reduce our OPEX costs.
  • Seamless integration with various applications like VMware, databases and other applications. Storage integration with IntelliSnap.
  • It supports most of the cloud platforms backup destinations if your objective is to move to the cloud.
  • Single place to manage all the data protection activities and management.
  • Best support in each of my support call experiences.
  • This is not what I would expect from a data protection solution, but since it is connected with each of my infrastructures they could provide some monitoring solutions so I don't have to go with another monitoring vendor.
  • If it could support an install on Unix and allow other database users to align their strategy if they want to go with a non Microsoft option.
It is well suited for a wide variety of applications and scenarios. It's hard to pick one, however, if you have a heterogeneous environment I would suggest going with commvault. For small organizations, I don't think it is worth it.

  • We had a great return of investment with Commvault mainly because of their integration with AWS Cloud (like supporting S3-IA and Glacier).
  • Easy to operate and need fewer people to monitor and configure.
Easy to manage and [has] single place management of every option in commvault. It's reliable and has the best support compared to many backup vendors. Support provides quick fixes and good technical support.
  • Configuring commvault initially is very easy and can start without much knowledge about it.
  • Convert a physical server to virtual by just right clicking.
  • Restoring from different copies just by changing precedence.
  • Upgrades, even though it is easy while upgrading preparation it's very hard to do testing on the database before if that has any compatibility issues.
Yes
It is mainly used for reporting and alerting and few tasks. I don't prefer using the mobile app for this kind of enterprise tool and it is not suitable.
As I mentioned earlier it is a very very easy and robust tool out there for this function.
