Concrete5 is easier to use than Drupal or Joomla, and beats them in terms of features. WordPress gives Concrete5 a run for its money as far as extension and theme availability, as well as user base and support availability. But Concrete5 beats WordPress hands down with features like advanced editing permissions.

Concrete5 is probably the most user friendly for clients. I selected Concrete5 mostly because I found out about it and didn't really believe its capabilities and had to try it out. It pretty much is what a non-tech savvy person would want in a CMS for content management.

WordPress has a very confusing unintuitive admin section for the user to use while Concrete5 was much more intuitive and effective for people not use to working with a CMS solution. Components are selectable by areas you create in the page template and allows a user to quickly switch out, lets say an article for a slideshow or any other component they had installed. Creating new pages and content on the fly and setting a date on when you wanted it to be published was also brilliant. The ease of use of the admin section is unparalleled in my experience.

I believe WordPress and Drupal to be superior products. But Concrete5 holds its own against them. I selected Concrete5 for real estate and marketing firms for the ease of use and updating. The drop and drag editor is hard to beat.

WordPress' blog structure is great for that, blogs. Once you start going into more complex web environments it struggles immensely and it also has many security issues. Concrete5 solves this with a great permissions model and a reusable UI component archictecture.

Aside from being more stable and more secure, Concrete5 manages all the plugins, so risk of infection through a nasty plugin is removed.
The Concrete5 user interface is much more friendly than the WordPress user interface. Ease of use, ease of install - both compelling reasons to make this your go to choice for a CMS solution. The server load is light too.

There is also an excellent ecommerce plugin for Concrete5 that neatly completes the package, making this a competitor for OpenCart as well!

I find significant advantages over these other products. As a designer, I appreciate not having to design within a rigid structure, or shoehorn a design into particular format. As a developer, the security, useability and developer support from the core Concrete5 developers and the larger community is terrific. As an end user, the comparative ease of being able to manipulate content and resources for a project, is much easier. The other products, while powerful, can't seem to make the leap from power to ease of use. Most end users don't have the knowledge or experience to be able to use these products and can be easily overwhelmed with the administrative backend of these other products.

Personally I feel that WordPress is overly complicated and not as efficient as Concrete5. For example, Wordpress is a blogging platform hacked into a CMS, where Concrete5 is almost like a foundation with a CMS component. Concrete5 is very similar to Drupal just without the steep learning curve.

Concrete5 absolutely shines in comparison. While there are areas where one system may perform a specific task better than Concrete5, when it comes to the whole package Concrete5 can't be beat.

  • Wordpress,Drupal,PHP
Concrete5 is the least contrived CMS I've ever run across. It's easily the quickest to theme and get up and running whereas Wordpress or Drupal could take months to get a Theme made Concrete5 can get one in a week. There's no reason to re-invent the wheel with loops and the such like WordPress. Pop in a bit of PHP code into a basic html page and it becomes a dynamic text box.

WordPress - Getting better as WCMS but still primarily for blogging sites.
Joomla - Very robust system with large community however can be complex for authoring and site management.
Adobe CQ (AEM) - Enterprise class system with large price tag.

The front end editing is really what sets Concrete5 apart. While others have extended front-end editing capabilities to other CMS setups with plugins / modules, it's native to Concrete5 and a big part of their game plan. In 5.7 this has really been taken to another level. It's very clean and fast to build out pages with blocks.

We selected Concrete5 for the flexibility of building different types of pages and the ease of editing content directly on the page. Other CMS products such as WordPress result in a user editing a page blind until they preview it. Concrete5 also makes having multiple content areas much easier than WordPress, which in contrast only offers a main content area and a widget sidebar without making more extensive changes.

WordPress is more so catching up with new solutions such as Concrete5 in the drag and drop content management realm. WordPress has not yet committed to providing drag and drop editing tools. Instead you rely on the community developed tools which can be an extremely large commitment should it prove not to be the best solution within a short amount fo time, where your team may commit to another drag and drop tool leaving your clients with a tool that your no longer invested in.

In not being an MVC platform and also not developed on newer faster technologies such as the emerging nodeJS, WordPress will eventually need a major commitment towards redevelopment from the ground up.

  • Umbraco,Sitecore Web Content Management,WordPress,Drupal,Joomla!
Concrete5 is my first choice if you compare it with smaller solutions like Wordpress,Joomla or Drupal because of its ease to use and flexibility. However, solutions for bigger projects like Sitecore or Umbraco are in their own league. They perform where Concrete5 is not very present which is the ability to handle a lot of data and a lot of users with different permissions.

I tried WordPress back when it was @ 2.5 or so. It was very blog oriented.
Have used CMS Made Simple. I liked it but it got to be outdated.
Drupal has a higher learning curve and would take a lo more training and time to implement.
I used Joomla 2.6 but found that it was not as user friendly for the editors - More rigid in setting upI would like to see how things have changes with.
Looked into PyroCMS and want to explore deeper in the future - It looks like a really nice system.
Tried MODx and liked it a lot but for a non-technical user it would not be as easy to work with - but I like it and have experimented with it (with my lack of PHP knowledge).
Explored SilverStripe because of its clean UI but was not able to overcome some of its perceived limitations.

  • Perch,Wordpress
I often use Perch for smaller site builds because it is simpler, lighter, and faster than Concrete5. Perch has become more and more capable and along the way is taking over some of the medium-size sites I build.
WordPress was designed for blogs, and its ubiquity has made it a common hacker target. I avoid it entirely now because it is unusual that I build blogs.

  • Drupal,Joomla!
Comparing Concrete5 to Drupal and Joomla are easy. Joomla has a steep learning curve, and Concrete5 does not, this means if I have to teach a client to use a CMS, Concrete5 will be a much smoother process. Drupal also tends to have a bit of a learning curve, but beyond that Drupal tends to produce the most errors, errors which prevent the site from working, If there is a headache CMS that makes me want to code everything from scratch instead, it is Drupal!

I've utilized other content management systems such as Wordpress as well as a custom-built CMS used by a university. It seems that all content management systems have their strengths and weaknesses, but in terms of getting a project completed with an easy-to-use interface that's understandable for clients, I'd rank Concrete5 as the best for that scenario.
