Only the Earned Media/SEO department uses Conductor right now. We currently use it for ranking tracking and some reporting, although hoping to incorporate it more into our processes in the future.
  • Strategy organization, specifically with keyword categories and content segments. Both of these really help you stay organized with different initiatives that you're working on to not only track and report on performance but to compare and even test initiatives.
  • This is pretty specific, but rank trends and keyword pipelines. These views are both good for understanding impact of initiatives and reporting/communicating this with clients in way that makes them say "wow!"
  • To piggy back on my last point...Overall, I think Conductor does a good job of prioritizing features and views that are exactly what marketers need to show business impact. You could just report rankings, but Conductor always seems focused on taking it a step further and giving you easier ways to communicate success with clients in terms and charts like clients actually understand and that speak better to their business goals.
  • Potentially the incorporation of more metrics. I'm not necessarily sure how to do this without getting too cumbersome, but it would be great to be able to pull custom metrics from GA, or engagement metrics. Again, I'm not sure how to pull the engagement metrics that GA has, since they are sometimes not as meaningful as we'd like, but overall I think with the increased importance on engagement for SEO, having some sort of engagement section of the tool would be VERY valuable. Whether this is made up of simple engagement from GA, or connecting with Hot Jar or other heat map/engagement tools I'm not sure, but I think that would be very impactful.
  • Bring annotations back! This was a very useful tool, but it went away. Especially if those annotations show up in Page Insights along the automatically-detected changes that go there.
  • The "Page Recommendations" tool has gotten a lot better, but it's still not useful enough to want to use it. It gives fairly generic recommendations that may not apply based on the specific keyword strategy for that page. I may need to dig around more myself, but i have the feeling that it could be better, perhaps with a more tight connection to your own keyword categories or other planned strategies. Or maybe I just haven't tested it out enough.
I'm not sure if I can place a finger on where it's not well-suited per se, but I think I will say (at least from an agency perspective) that it works better within a department or company that has well-defined processes already. I think Conductor is a great tool to incorporate into SEO processes, products, and strategies, but when the department is small, agile, and kind of free-for-all, I feel Conductor's valuable tools may be taken advantage of less, so I guess would be a slightly less-desirable scenario.

  • I haven't calculated ROI specifically, and I don't believe we currently use Conductor to its fullest potential, but I would say that if using Conductor to its fullest potential in the area of SEO strategy management, you would probably see positive ROI due to being able to be very efficient and focused with your strategy.
We've seen some data discrepancies in keyword search volume, especially during the transition away from Keyword Planner to Conductor's own proprietary data. This is pretty important, mainly because we use search volume and competition to prioritize areas of focus for strategy AND to communicate that with the client, so with incorrect data you risk making an inadvertently poor decision AND it's confusing to the client. Other than that, data seems consistent.
So far there hasn't been that much collaboration in terms of content. I haven't found a workflow that really brings a lot of value to content planning. I'm sure it's there but I just haven't used those features to the fullest potential yet, so maybe my answer isn't the best on this one.
I didn't really use this feature much.
Support has been stellar from chat to onboarding and Customer Success Manager support.
I have used Semrush regularly, alongside Conductor and in place of Conductor. Semrush is more cost effective, but overly complicated and not as good with reporting. I think the biggest thing I miss when using Semrush is content segments actually. However, I do prefer Semrush's Keyword Magic too for keyword research.

Sales, strategy, coordinator. So hitting all levels- from high-level overview to day-to-day, in-the-weeds set up and analysis.
3
Simply experience and familiarity knowing where things are. No special skills required.
  • Tracking results from specific SEO projects
  • Pitching new business by creating results predictions
  • Overall organic visibility
  • Predicting project results/ROI
  • Using the Research tools more frequently
Not my decision. I would be excited to keep using it but sometimes it can be cost-prohibitive for clients.
No
  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
I wasn't the decision maker, but I do know that the decision comes down to the ability to show the most value in our work with clients at scale (as an agency)
Wouldn't change anything.
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was minimal
  • Losing historical data from previous tools
Pretty thorough set up and implementation. The only thing I will say is historically Conductor account directors try to support with strategy and keyword research and end up adding a bunch of ultimately irrelevant keywords to tracking.
No, we are familiar enough with Conductor not to need premium support.
Yes
Yes, reported many bugs. The team is very responsive but not always able to fix it (goes into Feature Request)
No exceptional time comes to mind - they are very responsive consistently across all issues, but i can't say there's ever been an "above and beyond" moment.
  • Keyword Performance
  • Content Performance / Content Segments

They're easy to use, but maybe a little clunky sometimes. Like weird formatting/text box quirks in workspaces.

We've been using Conductor over the last six months to identify areas where our content and metadata can be tweaked for SEO gain. We also use it to help guide us with respect to AdWords spend and better understanding the impact of our campaigns and inform our decision-making in that space. I am the primary user, but several team members have access to the interface and we are increasingly integrating it into our content production and management workflows.
  • Tracks "TrueRank" for Google Searches on keywords.
  • Shows progress over time. Strong visualizations of performance of what's improving and what's slipping.
  • Provides actionable intelligence of areas that can be addressed.
  • Helps prioritize tasks based on impact and estimated level of effort.
  • Shows competitor rank and allows you to understand how others competing with you for traffic are positioning their content.
  • The amount of data that is available to you can be a bit overwhelming to users.
  • A quarterly "health check" would be a great value add.
  • Some basic tools to optimize content when it's being created would be great. Such as guidance on length of headlines/titles, meta descriptions, meta keywords. It tells you a week later when something is "too long" or "too short", but on the front end, before it's saved and published. Also more specific suggestions would be great.
  • The weekly nature of updates is a bit limiting.
  • Sorting through recommendations and action items, some of the sort options reset themselves too much. I haven't been able to figure out how to make certain criteria selections save/persist.
We are a pretty established brand that doesn't have the same type of competition as many brands or publishers. Conductor has been a great tool for me in demonstrating to the content team that there are things under our control that can help us move up search rankings and gain more click-throughs from searches on our keywords. It has shined light on the fact that we do have competition for traffic in that space and helped people understand the impact that best practices can have in driving a greater share of traffic.

  • It has put actionable intelligence in front of more users, giving them recommendations of how they can improve the SEO of existing content.
  • It has helped make SEO a more approachable subject with tangible measures and results for our staff who are not too involved on the technical side of things. It's one thing to tell someone "this is important" or "this has an impact on search rank", but it's far better to be able to show someone "before" and "after" results on how a piece of content moves around the rankings based on different tactics. They are now more aware of how they can incorporate recommendations into their content creation and speak in the language that customers/users themselves use for their search queries.
  • Our site does not have as much of a direct revenue component as many brand/business sites, so we do not have a great way of measuring ROI for solutions like this.
  • Vendor implemented
  • Implemented in-house
Yes
We used Conductor's professional services "quick start" program and are glad we did. There are a couple stages over the first 30-90 days, of discovery, configuration, knowledge transfer, continued tweaking. While our content doesn't fall into a strict vertical like many sites, and also our competition and our revenue objectives are less straightforward, we still found it tremendously valuable in getting us early results and familiarity with the platform. Highly recommended.
Change management was minimal
It was not a major factor for us.
  • Since we don't have a straightforward revenue objective on our site (i.e. selling ads, products, gaining qualified leads) we were probably a bit of a challenge for their staff, who are more used to speaking to the benefits Conductor brings to more traditional business cases.
I definitely recommend their professional services for getting started. It got our account 90% of the way to where we needed to be in order to gain value from it. In fact, I'd suggest that with few exceptions (such as, you have a staff that is already familiar with the platform and doesn't need any help), the quick start services over the first 30-90 days should be a standard part of onboarding with any new client. It definitely got us to the point of gaining ROI from the solution and, in turn, will make it easier to justify renewal and continued investment in it.
  • Overall, it's just a bit of information overload. It'd be nice if they split it into simple and advanced functionality based on user level.
It's good and intuitive for me as a fairly technical, moderately advanced user, but I don't have confidence that it'd be easy for a less technical, more content-oriented user.

Primarily, I am the only user. I do however, use the dashboarding tools to produce reports that are shared with other people in the marketing department, including content creators, and also with the executive team. We bought Conductor to help us to prioritize our search engine optimization efforts and have a seamless way to track and measure the success or failure of our optimization tactics. We did this so that we could take the optimization tasks in house, tie it more closely to content creation, and also eliminate the need for an agency partnership.
  • Reporting on status over time of particular keywords. This is their core competency so it is no surprise that they do it well. It is incredibly simple to build out groups of keywords, conduct optimization experiments and track the success or failure of your efforts over a longer range of time.
  • Providing insight into the competitive landscape. At any moment, I can see how my competitors are for a particular keyword and how we stack up as well as pulling in information about their page meta information alongside my own.
  • Tying search engine ranking to more typical measurements such as revenue, event tracking on a website etc. With the analytics integration you can get very granular in how you want to measure the success of your search engine optimization projects beyond just where you appear in a single generic Google search.
  • Mobile reporting - You can (with associated fees) see exactly where you (and your competition) rank for specific keywords from mobile devices from specific locations. Very valuable to know how your efforts are impacting not only local to our business searches, but also those in places that are further away. As an international distributor, but with only a single storefront, this is particularly powerful.
  • Keeping notes and information on the tests and techniques that you've employed can be a bit cumbersome. They have been working on streamlining this. There ARE ways to keep all of your notes and info right in the platform, it just isn't always within a single click from where you are in the platform.
  • Automation of tasks isn't really a priority. I wish there were some ways to automate outbound link requests from within the platform. There are tools to pull this data up and make it visible and if it was then tied in with WhoIs data to pull a technical email contact, that would be super awesome and timesaving.
  • Some of the content segmentation tools aren't very intuitive. They take some getting used to. However, the good news is that the help documentation is available a single click from anywhere in the platform and there are lots of training resources. it just takes a bit of time to get up to speed.
If you are managing a very small site with only a handful of relevant keywords, it is not likely worth the expense, but for any large site with many relevant keywords, it is a huge timesaver on managing and monitoring your position.

  • Conductor has greatly improved and decreased the amount of time we have to spend on reporting on search engine optimization tasks and results. We now spend 5 hours a week working directly in this tool and that includes prioritizing tasks, doing reporting, monitoring competition, and reaching out for backlinks.
  • We have successfully moved our average search rank position across all tracked keywords from a 12 to a 9 in the last 12 months.
They are fast, helpful, and knowledgeable. That is really all I'm looking for in support. I've had very few issues, but after upgrading my account, I wasn't seeing all of my data. I emailed support and within an hour, they had everything all set for me.
We never used a product before, but we did have an agency that monitored this for us and reported to us on status. It was cumbersome. They only checked our rankings once a quarter so we couldn't make decisions or changes fast enough. We chose Conductor because the tool was really easy to get up to speed on, they showed us a full demo with our own data, and we could easily see that we would be able to do the work of that agency without issue.
1
Only I use Conductor but about six others review reports regularly.
1
I'm a marketer by trade, I do have some technical knowledge as well, but I think that really anyone could learn to use the tool effectively.
  • Reviewing and monitoring our position on our main .com domain.
  • Using the tool to expand and build up a new domain that we have that is focused on video. YouTube analytics is great for this.
  • We use the tool extensively for an outbound link building campaign.
  • We were able to find some high priority problems with the structure and underlying foundation of our site and resolve them.
  • I want to get more into tying search ranking and position with content insights and also with Adobe Analytics.
I can't imagine going back to doing my job without Conductor.
No
Change management was minimal
  • I needed to review the keywords that were mined and added by the vendor to make sure they were aligned with business objectives. This wasn't an issue per se, but was the part where we had the most time internally.
Nothing could be as easier. If you have keyword lists you are already monitoring, they can upload all of those. If you want them to mine your site for some, they can do that. To get the most value out of the system you need to review your keywords, categorize them, and assign prime URL's. Those all take time on the client side, so be prepared to have to invest a little time yourself to get everything squared away unless you already have all of that data in a spreadsheet or something. I did not.
Not Sure
I've never needed it. I have no idea if they have such a charge or not, but I've been supported excellently just for the price of my package.
Yes
Yes, I had an issue with one of my screens not displaying properly, some of the data was misaligned. I sent a screenshot and by the next morning when I logged in it was resolved.
I've only needed support a couple of times and both were great experiences. I upgraded my account once since I've been a customer, adding additional domains, additional modules and additional keywords. I was having some issues accessing one of the modules that I'd added and reported it. Within an hour, they had the issue resolved. I've NEVER had to reach out or inquire about the status on a ticket and I consider that exceptional in this day and age.
  • Looking at your pipeline, how your keywords are ranked is so incredibly easy.
  • Super easy to see and review any recommendations for your site.
  • Setting up the content segments is a bit cumbersome. For some sites figuring out how to segment is also challenging depending on how your URL's are structured.
It is great, but there is some room for improvement. I mostly wish that I was always a single click away from leaving a note for myself.
Bi-Weekly success calls. Excellent post sale service.

Go Big or go Home? Conductor lets you go big. EDDY uses Conductor for 8 websites with excellent results. We give access to the Product Team and Creative Team so they can monitor progress and get ideas for content. The tool is only administered by the SEO Team. We use reports from Conductor to support business decision making.

  • Business Visibility: Excellent reporting and business intelligence with tools such as Keyword Pipeline.
  • Focus: Conductor helps us focus on the top opportunities across 8 sites and hundreds of thousands of pages.
  • Excellent Training: Conductor's documentation and training library are second to none. I can take junior people and feel very comfortable that they can quickly and effectively get up to speed.
  • Power Tools: For myself and my other more experienced users Conductor provides a wide array of power tools that we use to analyze our sites, content, and the related business performance.
  • Categorization allows us to create excellent drill down capability within the tool. We can zoom in from the site level down to very discrete section of the website and compare performance of those sections independently or in comparison to any other part of the website. This capability allows us to understand what ROI we are achieving based on content creation efforts. It helps us plan and ideate new content.
  • The Keyword Visibility Tool is one of my favorites! The first thing I do every Monday morning is to log-in to Conductor and review Keyword Visibility. We can quickly and effectively discern if there are any issues with site pages or if recent optimizations garnered us improvements. The tool helps to focus upcoming work as well.
  • Do not underestimate "Categories"! Building out your categories in detail makes Conductor an extremely effective tool. You can get a detailed "health" view of your site on the main page. This helps you identify opportunities that you would otherwise overlook with the Keyword Visibility Tool. You can compare similar categories and filter to compare multiple different types of categories. One click takes you to the Keyword Pipeline view for a given category and one more click can take you to the Keyword Visibility for that Category. This is exactly how I would design it myself. :)
  • Wherefore art thou Webmaster Tools? Having the Page level detail (with keywords) from Webmaster Tools integrated into Conductor in a similar way to Visibility Explore would be ideal. Especially since Google has made using Search Analytics painful with their last "update".
  • Pages, not Keywords! Conductor is slowly morphing to be a Content / Page platform. However, all of these tools started as keyword centric. For example, in the Keyword Visibility Tool I never click through the keywords. I open the associated pages instead. What I want are recommendations at the page level; not for discrete keywords. I have lots of ideas how to do this right. Let's talk....
  • Workflow. Simply not robust enough right now. Needs to be able to be assigned from almost anywhere in the platform.
If you are serious about enterprise SEO then you're going to use Conductor. Besides being the best tool-set; their customer service and support blows away their competitors.

  • How about a 243% in net profit within 4 months on our biggest site?
  • The ability to measure the effectiveness of new content pieces helps our creative team come up with increasing better ideas. Both an ROI metric and an efficiency metric.
  • Speed. We are able to do more faster and more effectively with Conductor. This allows us to get the absolute most out of our staff.
Two words: "Golden Hair". It is actually the nickname for our main support person Kevin Blake. When I talk to prospective users of Conductor I always mention the Golden Hair level of service. It is a running inside joke (now public, and thanks Vanessa Barokas for coining the term). Everything from the built in help and training to the support team is fantastic.
I will be brutally honest. BrightEdge has a great sales staff and a so/so at best customer service group. And a clunky user interface. I used BrightEdge and Conductor at the same time for 10 months. Conductor was easier to use. Much more intuitive. Better value for the money at the keyword level. BrightEdge has a nifty tool in the DataCube. I like it. However, I can also get the same type of data from several other sources much more cost effectively. At the end it was no comparison. Conductor won hands down.

SEO, Product Management, Creative, and even a Content Freelancer. We find giving the Product Team and Creative Visibility [Team] helps them do their jobs.

We have two high-end SEO people, myself and Anthony. We handle all of the configurations, reporting, set up, and admin. We have the sites split out between us based on what we routinely work on. That is more than enough in-house support. Conductor is excellent about helping us out with anything we have questions about.
  • Content ROI.
  • Website Migration.
  • Revenue Generation through SEO Optimization.
  • Complete website migration including new content creation in support of what we saw in Conductor.
  • Tracking content generation through Social Shares and back-links through Keyword Pipeline to Revenue.
  • Uncovering hidden gems. Areas of the website that we did not have on our content calendar yet had great potential for SEO optimizations.
  • Full integration of Social Signals and back-links into the tool.
  • Integration of Google Tag Manager built content groupings into Conductor's view of the site.
  • Integration of webmaster tools page query data into Conductor.
Just renewed for two years. Nuf said.
Yes
We were running Conductor and BrightEdge across the enterprise. After a 10 month head-to-head battle (because of contract terms) Conductor won hands down. We have evaluated numerous other platforms in the past two years and foresee no reason in the next year or two to look again.

FORGET SALES! Look, can we be honest? The purpose of sales is to sell you. If you think you have a great relationship with the sales person. All that means is they are good at their job. Do not let that sway your opinion! After sales support along with product features and usability are what is critical. Conductor wins on these criteria every time.
The only thing that I would change in our selection criteria is to use more third party reviews. I find that well thought out and detailed reviews can help with the decision making process. It is very helpful to have your own decision making framework well established going into a review process. Again, third party reviews can help you flesh out your framework.

Change management was a small part of the implementation and was well-handled
The main change management has to do we how we function as an organization. The previous SEO head did not give accounts to the product team or creative, seeing this as just an SEO team tool. By incorporating it into our webdesign and content creation processes we've gotten much more value!
  • None.
  • How about really none!
  • Did I mention none?
Yes, yes I do. The only thing I wish I had done more with starting out was with categories. There are two kinds of people in this world. Lumpers and Splitters. If you disagree you're a splitter. Conductor lets you be both. By building your own custom categories you can lump and split your data and views as many ways as you desire. It took me a couple of months to figure this one out.

The support I get from Conductor is simply the best I have ever had from a software vendor. And I'm old and have used thousands of packages. Their integrated help, available for every page/view within the tool is brilliant. Support requests, sent from the page, pull all of the relevant information saving time. They get back to you almost on-click.

There are very few bugs with Conductor. Anything I have reported has been completely investigated and resolved in a very timely manner.
So many examples so little time... Categorization is a very important feature within Conductor. As I was doing mas science once to totally revise my categories Kevin Blake took my example and just did it. I was not expecting that. I had sent him the example to make sure it made sense before I ran it across all of my keywords. He replied back how it made perfect sense and he had implemented it for me. Have tons of other similar examples.
  • The Bulk Keyword Update tool is your best friend.
  • The ability to download into Excel what you are seeing on just about any screen is excellent.
  • The Visibility Explorer and Paid & Natural Explorer are great tools.
  • Workflow needs to be enhanced to be triggered from many more areas within the tool, not just on the keyword recommendation pages.
  • Please integrate with webmaster tools so I do not have to do this by hand for page level query information.
  • Needs an auto categorize feature for recently optimized pages and their associated keywords.

In comparison to everyone else it is a ten. However, there are certain things (already documented for Conductor) that would make the tool even more amazing. As Conductor is constantly improving their platform they will be a 9+ (10 compared to others) for the foreseeable future.
