CosmoLex has been praised by users as a comprehensive practice management, timekeeping, and accounting software. Solo practitioners value it as a one-stop solution for various tasks. Its capabilities span planning, trust accounting, billing, business reporting, client portal communications, and mobile tracking through its app. Trust accounting is a prominent use case, particularly for those engaged in fixed fee work. While some users rely on other software for document generation, they find CosmoLex's features useful for specific tasks. Newcomers to CosmoLex, including assistants, have found it to be user-friendly and use it more frequently than the main users. Legal service providers rely on CosmoLex to organize clients, maintain files, and manage their client database. The task tracking system helps keep employees productive and on track, while the document generation system aids in efficient file creation for clients. Overall, users have had positive experiences with CosmoLex and consider it a valuable tool for various aspects of their legal practice management.

Comprehensive Bookkeeping and Billing Features: Several users have praised the software for its comprehensive and efficient bookkeeping and billing features. They have found these features to be highly effective in managing their financial tasks seamlessly.

Excellent Practice Management Capabilities: Many reviewers have expressed their satisfaction with the software's overall practice management capabilities. They appreciate how it enables them to easily handle various aspects of their practice, contributing to improved efficiency.

Responsive Support and Assistance: Users have appreciated the responsiveness and support provided by the software. They highlight the prompt assistance they receive whenever they face any issues or have questions, which has greatly helped them in using the software effectively.

Clunky Interface: Several users have expressed frustration with the interface, describing it as clunky and mentioning difficulties in finding what they need. They have found the navigation to be unintuitive and have struggled to locate specific features or functions within the software.

Weak Accounts Payable Function: Some reviewers have pointed out that the accounts payable function of the software is not up to par. They have encountered issues such as limited functionality, lack of customization options, and difficulty in managing invoices and payments efficiently.

Slow Loading Times: The software has been criticized by multiple users for its slow loading times. These delays significantly impact productivity as users experience sluggish performance when performing tasks such as generating reports, preparing checks, inputting data entries, and moving between different matters. This can lead to frustration and a decrease in overall efficiency for users who rely on swift execution of these actions.

Users of CosmoLex recommend taking advantage of the valuable discounts offered to members of bar associations. They suggest seeking assistance during the transition process to ensure a smooth experience and recommend utilizing the support provided to properly set up the software and receive sufficient training. Additionally, users advise exploring all of the features and options available in CosmoLex and taking the time to learn the full potential of the software for smoother case management, billing, and overall practice efficiency. Overall, users suggest trying out CosmoLex, especially for solicitors or transactional lawyers, solo practitioners, or small firms who want to spend less time managing their firm and more time focusing on legal work. It is also recommended to switch immediately to CosmoLex for those looking for an all-in-one tool for legal billing and practice management. However, it is advised to research and compare different vendors before signing up for any software solution.

As a legal Service management software, we use it to organize our clients, maintain their files and mange the data base of clients. CosmoLex has a lot of other features including a task tracking system to keep our employees on task, a document generation system to help create files to be used for our clients, and many more.
  • Client Database
  • Document generation
  • Task assignment
  • Time tracking
  • File separation and security like ethical was to prevent opposing council in the same company from having open access to other clients.
  • More detailed user management.
I have saved a ton of Money for our company by using the free features already installed like the Document generation over paying for extra programs to help with the same thing.
  • Organizing client accounts
  • Document generation.
  • Billing
  • Time is the greatest factor when it comes to managing and creating documents and client accounts.
  • Tracking client data.

I use CosmoLex mostly for my trust accounting. I am a sole practitioner and mostly do fixed fee work, so I haven't used the timekeeping functions too much. I generally use other software for document generation, so I have used the document generation features for just a few things. I have one assistant who had never used CosmoLex before starting with me, and she typically uses it more than I do.
  • Cloud-based - accessible from anywhere.
  • Very easy to get started.
  • Intuitive user interface (for the most part).
  • No need for separate accounting software.
  • Check printing is very easy and smooth, especially when printing multiple checks.
  • Flexibility to integrate with other software to import billing.
  • Multiple line data entry - when adding multiple expenses manually, you have to wait for the software to load after each entry.
  • Loading can be slow - this includes generating reports, preparing checks, inputting data entries, moving from matter to matter - you have to wait a few moments with each action.
  • Cost - more costly than some other software options (similar in price to Clio).
  • Rather than pay for licenses, you pay per user, so you can't just purchase 3 licenses for 4 users without having some issues. When one user logs in and someone is already logged in under that username, the first user is logged out, even if they are in the middle of doing something.
Because it is cloud based, CosmoLex is well suited for a lawyer starting up a practice as there is no need for a server. It is also very easy to use from home as it doesn't require a remote session to login, but can be used from any device.

It is not well suited for a practice that requires a very fast pace for accounting as it takes a bit of time for each transaction to load, frustrating the user and causing them to lose momentum. On the other hand, if time is taken to set things up, there are a few tools that make importing expenses much quicker, and time can be made up by just taking some time to set things up.
  • Took a lot of headache out of accounting (I started with Clio which integrates with QuickBooks and it was a nightmare dealing with it until I switched to CosmoLex).
  • An approved trust accounting software is required in my jurisdiction, and CosmoLex allowed me to get started with very little delay.
  • When transitioning to a different office, CosmoLex was new to my new assistants, and they were set in their ways. There are currently few legal assistants in the area with any familiarity with CosmoLex, so there is always a preference for PCLaw or EsiLaw among the staff. CosmoLex ruffled a few feathers when my staff were forced to learn something new.
I used CosmoLex over PC Law mostly because it was cloud-based, and I used it over Clio because the accounting for Clio required the use of both Clio and QuickBooks which made for very inefficient data entry. CosmoLex is slower than PCLaw when inputting entries, but I believe that in the long run, it will be better as CosmoLex is better situated to move forward with new technology.

I use CosmoLex as my one and only practice management, timekeeping, and accounting software. I am a solo practice and a solo user. I began using it after a successful trial when I started my practice. It addresses planning, trust accounting, billing, business reporting, client portal communications, and mobile tracking through its app.
  • Bookkeeping and billing
  • Overall practice management
  • Responsiveness and support
  • Sometimes difficult to find what you want on the clunky interface.
  • Would be beneficial to offer a pared down version for solo practitioners
  • Accounts payable function is weak.
CosmoLex is very well suited for the solo or small practice where you just need a little more backup to keep you organized, or where you still intend to do your own taxes or like to have a lot of control over your activity and your output. It may also be well suited for a larger practice where the task management pieces would be more useful but, a lot of those pieces get in the way in a solo practice. It is also great for anyone who wants a strong trust accounting program built into their daily activities.
  • Billing piece is good for capture of billables.
  • The accounting piece is good for planning and Y-O-Y cost analysis.
  • The price is a little high for a solo but the bookkeeping side makes it worth it.
I did a Clio trial and have looked into them in-depth with their sales and training department. Even at a now-much-lower intro price, Clio just does not have the strength in reporting and trust management that CosmoLex offers. In a side by side comparison, Clio's interface is much easier to navigate and is more intuitive, but the two are even in terms of offered features for general practice management and billing. Clio has a stronger app with portal messaging available—this is a HUGE weakness in CosmoLex and you can only secure-message on the desktop application. Still, the fact that you have to add bookkeeping/accounting on top of Clio to get the same results over the management of finances continues to make CosmoLex the better choice for those who need that control.
There is far too much reliance on symbols versus words, and it is sometimes difficult to navigate to the function you need. CosmoLex offers great support, knowledge base, and training, but sometimes you just don't have an hour to spend learning how to do a basic function that you have forgotten, and you just need it to WORK. It would be great to have the option of having word labels instead of picture symbols. It would also be great to have full functionality in the smartphone app. It just is not good. Not good. Pretty much everything keeping me tied to CosmoLex is on the money management side.
I think that CosmoLex actually relies so much on its stellar support infrastructure that it forgets we don't actually want to have to use it. Just make the darn thing easier to navigate and understand, and you won't need all that client-facing support. You can choose chat, email, phone, knowledge base, embedded training videos within the different pages, but darn it all, I just want it to be more intuitive instead.
