We are using Cyberoam security service in our organization's IT department. Cyberoam firewall security scan network data based on source and destination IP criteria so that it can allow or block request for Internet or network access to protect from viruses. Cyberoam makes it easy for our Network administrators to grant network limited access, bandwidth, and software/URL/application access based on the user's identity to company employees.
  • Firewall logs is good thing that provided by Cyberoam.
  • Alerts and logs provided for different type of attacks and actions taken.
  • Ease of use functionality.
  • Cyberoam doesn't have enough signatures to detect all sites that need to be blocked.
  • Costing is high comparatively other firewall providers.
  • significantly increasing cost factor for maintenance contract.
Our organization found that Cyberoam is a cost-effective solution compared to other vendors. Cyberoam was having issues with SSO for Web Filtering. For, web filtering and application blocking, Cyberoam does not contain enough signatures or data so we can not achieve the goal of all of the sites that need to be blocked. Cyberoam is great because of its ease of use feature.

  • Firewall Management Console provided by Cyberoam is great compared to other providers.
  • Logs and console provided is more descriptive.
  • Costing is escalating fast for purchased plans.
The main factor is cost, as we are a startup organization. That's the main reason we choose Cyberoam stacks up against other network security services.

Cyberoam was being used in one of our branch offices, we could easily manage 100 employees with accurate UTM features. Traffic shaping is also highly reliable, bandwidth was properly shared among staff with Cyberoam. We could also prioritize based on the sudden bandwidth requirements, overall good for medium utilities and enterprises.
  • Accurate and precise bandwidth shaping
  • Utm features are completely reliable, uses mainly for conducting exams smoothly.
  • SD Wan features require more clarity.
  • Traffic shaping policy is a missing feature.
Cyberoam is well suited for enterprises or institutions which require good and precise UTM features which could be used to conduct secure exams and to maintain a strict cyber environment. it is less suited for enterprises with a good change management process, as it would require experienced administrators to main this firewall.

  • Considerable change was noted in the utilization of administrators after switching from the software firewall.
  • It is relatively better priced when compared to FortiGate.
  • Better log handling after the switch.
FortiGate is more costly, that is probably the only reason for considering Cyberoam over FortiGate. Remaining all other criteria, FortiGate has surpassed Cyberoam.

We first met a representative of Cyberoam at a large educational technology conference, on the expo show floor. Back in 2012, the problem to be solved at the time was related to students taking home one-to-one devices. While we were originally interested and had purchased their easy to manage home routers for our student's homes, we quickly turned our attention to their firewall UTM products. While we use other brands of firewalls, including others in the Gartner upper right quadrant, head-to-head with other vendors, no one else but Cyberoam understood K-12 education. Till this day, they're the only firewall product with 1-click Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) compliance. Firewall policies don't have to be established for each category as they're grouped together in an ideal way which makes overhead management very minimal. This is ideal for IT shops like ours with a small number of IT staff managing enterprise-class equipment. The firewall in this use case is specifically for a segment of our university network that has K-12 students connecting to the network. Faculty and staff of the K-12 school also connect to the same segment. We granular filter by grade level and have different policies by grade level and faculty/staff.
  • Easy to use compared to other firewall/UTM products
  • Good for SMB and enterprise, but also high marks for a K-12 use case
  • Longevity and reliability
  • Without mentioning an alternative brand, there is another leading company who has updated with firewall UI quite a bit. They offer an expanded line-up to meet a wider array of needs including specific appliances for web caching, proxy servers, and other products that have the same and familiar UI across the products. Each of the products does have some overlap so that customers can choose the right appliance for their use case.
  • After being acquired by Sophos, we saw our year-over-year costs escalate significantly since our original maintenance contract. They should consider revisiting the pricing, especially for education.
  • They should consider a current market analysis and see how the market is changing and adapting with other lower cost appliances for their product line up.
We've been happy with them for the most part for use in our K-12 segment.

Please also know that the review is for thoughts and sharing and does not represent or infer a product endorsement by myself or on behalf of the University of Hawaii system.
  • Positive - time and cost savings on management
  • Positive - still best in class for ease of CIPA compliance for K-12
  • Negative - escalating costs are pushing us away from the solution
At the time Fortinet wasn't open to changes and ease of use for our type of use case. Since then, the company has come a long way with ease of use of their product. We selected Cyberoam because of its UI and ease of use specifically for CIPA compliance for K-12.
